TELL US ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY

Many of you might already know that in Germany there are four seasons. We have spring (normally from March to May), summer (June to august), autumn (September to November) and winter (December to February); all of the four seasons differ strongly in the weather. While in winter the temperature can (just like it happened this year) sink to minus 20 degree, in summer it can go up to 35 degree. These huge differences are responsible for the different kinds of activities you can do in each of the

seasons. Now I want to tell you about a very popular activity in winter: to ski. As we have lots of mountains and tons of snow in winter, many Germans love to ski.

Very popular for skiing are the Alps. Not only Germans but also people from all over the world come to Germany, Switzerland or Austria to ski here in winter. The highest mountain of the Alps is the Mont Blanc with 4810 meters. When the weather is good, you have an amazing view on the other snow covered mountains and the blue sky above you.

But not only skiing or snowboarding are very popular among all those who like winter sport! Some people go there on vacation mostly to celebrate after the exercising! There’s even a special name for this kind of celebrating: Après-ski! Après-ski means celebrating after a day of skiing or snowboarding in one of the pubs or discos with a lot of alcohol and special Après-ski-music. Today there are already many DJs and musicians that live on this kind of music. Many hosts commit local bands that play traditional music in their pubs.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK

150.000 people in 2007, a great festival atmosphere and the best rock artists from Germany and from all over the world: That is Rock in Park and Rock in the Ring. Both are rock music festivals held in Germany. They are regarded as one event with a mostly identical lineup. These two events are the largest music festivals in Germany and very important for the young people in Germany. They have a long tradition and you should have been to one of them if

you are a rock music fan. Rock in the Ring takes place at the Nürburgring racetrack in the west of Germany. Rock in the Park takes place around the Frankenstadion in Nuremberg in the south of Germany. All artists perform one day at Nürburgring and another day in Nuremberg during the three day event.Rock in the Ring was the first time arranged in 1985. Artists like U2, Joe Cocker and Foreigner played their songs on the center stage. It was supposed to be a small one-time festival with 75.000 people, but it was so successful, that the organiser decided to make the concert to an annual event. Since 1993 also lesser known-up-and-coming bands have

the chance to present their music at Rock in the Ring. The list of very famous artists is really long. In 2011 were the headliners System of a Down, Coldplay, Disturbed, Beatsteaks, 3 Doors Down and The Kooks. It’s already official, who will be the headliners in 2012 (1. – 3. June): Gossip, Billy Talent, Marilyn Manson, The Offspring, Linkin Park and the famous german bands Die Toten Hosen and Deichkind. But besides the great

concerts there is a special festival atmosphere at both festivals. Most of the people camp at the Frankenstadion or the Nürburgring, make barbecue and drink german beer. You can meet a lot of new people and enjoy three days of music.

WHO IS AN ENTREPRENEUR (Part i) Entrepreneurs to me are the people who make the world move at the rate/ speed at which it is moving today. Sir Richard Branson (Virgin Group), Bill Gates (Microsoft), Prince Kofi Amoabeng (UT companies) are all people who can be described as entrepreneurs who have changed the course of doing things in their respective field of interest. Prince K. Amoabeng changed the finance industry in Ghana and UT is remembered anywhere by the slogan “a loan in less than 48 hours ”. These great people and many more entrepreneurs saw a need(s) in their society and thought of creative and innovative ways of meeting them. The definition of entrepreneurs is varied based on the perception of the one defining it. However, in their various definitions, certain characteristics or traits pop out and in this article and others to follow, we shall divulge them. The word entrepreneur originates from the French word, entreprendre, which means "to undertake”. Anyone who undertakes innovations, finance and business acumen in an effort to transform innovations into economic goods can be said to be an entrepreneur according to Wikipedia. This may result in new organizations or may be part of revitalizing mature organizations in response to a perceived opportunity. In a business context, it means to start a business. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary presents the definition of an entrepreneur as one who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise. The most obvious form of entrepreneurship is that of starting new businesses (referred as Startup Company); however, in recent years, the term has been extended to include social and political forms of entrepreneurial activity. When entrepreneurship is describing activities within a firm or large organization it is referred to as intrapreneurship . Thus two concepts arise out of entrepreneurship, within an o r g a n i z a t i o n ( intrapreneurship) and starting or restructuring an already existing organizations to achieve desired results (entrepreneurship). The intrapreneur uses innovation, creativity and passion (which are some of the characteristics of an entrepreneur) to bring about positive changes in the organization he/she works for. RISKS VS REWARDS IN ENTREPRENEURSHIPRisks are inherent in taking decisions. In starting a business, there is the risk of just being in business, the risk we can afford to take, the risk we cannot afford to take and the risk we cannot afford not to take. Being a smart entrepreneur means analyzing these risks and your ability as a person to contain it. Being a smart entrepreneur means knowing how to pass on most of the risk to another party. However, the reward(s) of engaging in entrepreneurial activities can be very immense. Self fulfillment, financial or physical assets increase, positive impact on society are all some of the rewards to be achieved in being an entrepreneur. However we all try to achieve financial rewards from our activities, one vital truth is that self fulfillment and having a positive impact on our society should be some of the factors that move us to take on entrepreneurial activities. … to be continued.
