Each year Architecture for Humanity's Open Architecture Challenge design competition brings public attention to inequities in the built environment affecting the health, prosperity and well being of under-served communities.

Open Architecture Challenge

By 2015 the world will need an additional ten million classrooms. At the same time, millions of existing classrooms are in serious need of repair and refurbishment and will need to be upgraded. Help design the classroom of the future.

Focus:

Students and teachers understand best what makes a learning space work. The 2009 Open Architecture Challenge will invite them to partner with architects in their community to design better, greener classrooms for their schools.


Focus: You can partner with a school in your community, a local solution to a local issue. Engage the students and teachers to design an innovative modular or traditional site-built structure.ORYou can partner with one of the schools that our school building partners work with, in India or Uganda.

Choose a school in your community

From India to Spain to Africa, schools are struggling to build facilities that meet the needs of 21st century students.



We are inviting you, the designer, to work with students and teachers to design the classroom of the future for a school of your choosing. Your design should address the unique challenges your school faces in trying to provide innovative, safe and sustainable learning spaces.

As a designer you can:

•Share your design expertise and inspire school students to re-imagine their classroom

•Help students learn about the built environment using a companion design curriculum

•Become an advocate for better classroom design in your community




Design Curriculum

In partnership with our education partners Curriki and the Global Nomads Group we have designed a companion curriculum hosted on Curriki to help designers engage students and teachers to help them understand their built environment better.

To further engage the students, Global Nomads Group is hosting webcasts for the eight lesson plans.



In India, the average teacher-to-pupil ratio is 40:1 and schools in high-density urban areas in low-income communities across India are faced with growing demand for enrollment. Students learn in spaces that lack adequate lighting, ventilation, and that are in need of upgrading to meet the needs of today’s students.

The challenge is to develop innovative design solutions to upgrade and expand existing classroom environments in high-density urban settings in India and beyond.

School districts have many constraints when planning for new classroom space. They must respond to shifting populations and overcrowded schools, aging infrastructure, limited capital funding and ever shrinking budgets. Relocatable classrooms are often chosen by administrators as an expedient solution to many of these complex issues.

The challenge is to develop innovative design for relocatable classrooms.

In Uganda, 57 percent of children finish primary school and 18 percent have the chance to attend secondary school. And over 1 million children are not enrolled in primary school and, of those, 70 percent are never expected to.



The challenge is to develop innovative design solutions for classrooms in remote/rural communities in Uganda, with little or no existing access to educational facilities.

Focus:

If your design wins, your school will receive funding up to $50,000 to build or upgrade a classroom, and you will receive a $5,000 grant to help them do it.
