Every October the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects celebrates the best and brightest shaping the built environment in the Philadelphia region and beyond.

The Design Awards competition is open to all AIA Philadelphia member architecture firms. Each firm is asked to submit their best projects and provide detailed descriptions based on a set of criteria. Those submissions are then turned over to the Design Awards jury, an out of town group of six architects typically arranged with the help of another AIA chapter, for the selection process.

This year’s jury was from New Orleans, LA and included the following individuals:• Mac Ball, FAIA, Waggonner & Ball Architects• Trula Remson, AIA, Remson Haley Herpin Architects• Steve Dumez, FAIA, Eskew+Dumez+Ripple• Paula Peer, AIA, Trapolin-Peer Architects• Lee Ledbetter, AIA, Lee Ledbetter & Associates• Trey Trahan, FAIA, Trahan Architects

For more information about AIA Philadelphia and the Design Awards Gala, visit www.aiaphiladelphia.org.

We would also like to take this opportunity to applaude this year’s Design Awards Gala sponsors, and a very specail thank you to our Platinum Level sponsor, Clemens Construction, ardent supporter of AIA Philadelphia and the Center for Architecture and Design.

KieranTimberlakeJoanne Aitken, FAIA, LEED AP BD+C

Joanne Aitken has devoted her professional life to building public appreciation for the value of architecture and its ability to shape place and create community. She has over thirty years of experience as an architect, educator, and advocate for the built environment. She led the Design Advocacy Group of Philadelphia as

a Steering Committee founding member and Chair from 2008-2011, and her reviews of the built environment, published in the weekly Philadelphia City Paper, helped spur discourse on design in Philadelphia. PEA PRIZEAssimilation Design Lab

Founded in 2012, Assimilation Design Lab LLC (ADL) is a young, dynamic architecture firm that strives to assimilate theory based design solutions with programmatic needs specific for each project and client. ADL’s core design principles are based on current contextual, technological, and sustainable conditions

juxtaposed to create unique design solutions. ADL believes in a collaborative approach, working closely with the client, construction trades, and artists, from conception through the final details of construction. This approach allows the architecture to seamlessly flow, from the big picture to the smallest detail, while creating complex spacial readings. Notable projects include the James Beard Design Award Finalist Tria Taproom located in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood and Passyunk Ave’s Sate Kampar.

CLIENTCongregation Rodeph Shalom

Rodeph Shalom is the oldest Ashkenazic congregation in the Western Hemisphere. While the historic building

is well-loved, the lack of interior connection between program spaces, coupled with a somewhat foreboding

and largely opaque exterior, undermined the current vision for a welcoming and open place. The addition offered

the opportunity to improve the historic building through connectivity and legibility, while introducing a contemporary

architectural character of welcome and luminosity.

CLIENTPhiladelphia Center for Architecture and Design

The Philadelphia Center for Architecture and Design renovations included a significant reduction in the size of its

bookstore to create greater visual connectivity throughout the space. The Philadelphia AIA chapter invited one of its member

firms to design and construct a screen wall to separate the store from the main hall using donated material from

a manufacturer of terra cotta rainscreen wall systems. The screen wall explores the creative process writ large. Revealing

the intriguing cross section of an otherwise familiar material became the inquiry. Joining this material in an unconventional

yet sturdy way became the tectonic challenge. Aggregating the connection details into a simple, functional, and ephemeral pattern invites the next level of inquiry about how we can think

differently about the world around us through design.

TRUMBAR LIGHT VAULT

DIVINE DETAIL WINNERStanev Potts Architects

CLIENTKorman Communities

The former Benjamin Franklin Hotel, designed by Horace Trumbauer in 1923, had three large interior check-in windows, similar to a bank teller window. One of these was tasked with becoming a fully functioning cocktail bar. The desire to have a warm, hearth-like glow emanate from the space without adding a distraction to the larger lobby drove many lighting and material choices. Low levels of light, mostly linear LEDs distributed through many sources rather than fewer, brighter lights were employed. Much experimentation was performed in the application of the Muntz Metal, and final light diffusers and color gels were used to adjust light levels in the field.

CLIENTUnder Armour

The unlikely decision to up-cycle an abandoned big box store to a vibrant creative workplace emerged out of Under Armour’s urgent demand for space and sincere commitment to the Baltimore community. Under Armour’s expansion to a new campus at Baltimore’s Port Covington reuses the shell and structure of a 130,000 square foot facility. The addition of a mezzanine level accommodates 650 employees, a 350-seat auditorium, food service, and fitness amenities.

CONSORTIUM FOR BUILDING ENERGY INNOVATION

MERIT AWARD - BUILT CATEGORY

CLIENTThe Department of Energy/The Pennsylvania State University

In 2011, the Consortium for Building Energy Innovation (CBEI) was formed by the Department of Energy. CBEI incorporates

more than twenty member organizations, led by Penn State University, working towards whole building-system solutions for energy usage reduction. Built within a former 1940s navy

recreational building, CBEI Headquarters is a living laboratory for advanced energy retrofit technology. It is designed to

showcase energy-saving mechanical systems and lighting approaches for different space types.

CLIENTWilmington Friends School

Set on a bucolic campus in Wilmington, DE, the Wilmington Friends School initially consisted of a modest school building

adjacent to a small, detached historic farmhouse. Over time, a series of ad-hoc additions have been constructed, surrounding

the schoolhouse and forming a massive floorplate. The most recent expansion, the Global Learning Center, advances

Wilmington Friends School’s highly-regarded International Baccalaureate Program. To mitigate the scale of the addition,

the five new classrooms have been conceived as modest, independent structures organized along a glazed “porch”

which extends from the school’s existing library towards the historic farmhouse.

CLIENTCabrini University

The Cabrini Athletic Pavilion is the first phase in the implementation of a new campus master plan for Cabrini University. The master plan focuses on creating a unified

campus environment, through an inversion of the existing campus plan, moving vehicular traffic to its edges and

creating a pedestrian-focused core, woven together by a network of paths and open spaces. The new Athletic Pavilion

is designed to serve as a great room that connects the various programmatic spaces in a central area at the threshold

between the existing center and the new building.

We’re SMCA - Sheet Metal Contractors Association of Philadelphia and Vicinity. Our members are the most experienced sheet metal contractors in the Philadelphia area, and they adhere to the exacting standards of National SMACNA – the gold standard of excellence in the construction industry. SMCA member contractors employ only the most highly-skilled sheet metal workers. Those who have successfully completed the demanding curriculum of the International Training Institute.

SMCA members are involved in HVAC, architectural and specialty sheet metal, testing adjusting and balancing (TAB) systems, Fire Life safety testing and LEED and Green installs. SMCA and Local 19 are leading the effort to update older systems with newer, greener HVAC systems that use less energy, are more efficient and cost effective in order to provide “Clean air solutions” so everyone can breathe better.

Your HVAC system works a lot like your own lungs - it has vents and ducts that keep circulation moving and keeps temperatures even. It all works well together, but if “the lungs” stop, the whole system can shut down.
