October 2016 AIA Nevada Honor Awards Jury C/o AIA Nevada 401 S. Fourth Street, Ste. 175 Las Vegas, NV 89101 Dear AIA Jury, I am both pleased and honored to support the nomination of SHarchitecture for the Nevada Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Firm Award. SHarchitecture has over 30 years of commitment to the Las Vegas Community, the State of Nevada and the AIA. They have evidenced their commitment through multiple generations of firm leadership being engaged in multiple levels at the AIA.

SHarchitecture is more than a collection of architects and designers. They are a collective of citizens and community activists who can be found giving back to community organizations on the weekend as often as they can be found working long nights on project deadlines. They are committed to a better built environment through their architecture and a better community through their individual efforts. Truly this is the meaning of the firm award.

I believe SHarchitecture exemplifies the finest attributes of the AIA, and for these reasons

deserves to be recognized with the 2016 AIA Nevada Firm Award. Yours truly,

Eric M Roberts, AIA Treasurer AIA Western Mountain Region

AIA Nevada Distinguished Service Awards 401 S 4th Street, Ste 175 Las Vegas, NV 89101

In the past 30-plus years, SHarchitecture has completed a wide variety of recognizable projects throughout the state of Nevada. However, this submittal will highlight more than an architecture firm focused on projects of bricks, steel and mortar alone; but will show a firm that is focused on the people and the creation of lasting communities in which we have the honor to work. We love the practice of architecture, and over the past three decades we have become quite good at it, but we respect the power and enduring qualities of the human spirit and our role as architects in creating places for people.

Founded in 1985, SHarchitecture has grown, matured and prospered into a firm of creative, diverse and versatile professionals. SHarchitecture’s success is evidenced by its steady growth, numerous awards and most importantly: successful, long term client relationships. Now in our third decade of operation, our team of talented and innovative professionals is passionate about unleashing the power of design and focuses efforts on each of our market sectors. To build value for our clients, our projects have a track record of reduced operating cost through energy savings, and they are designed within budget. Good sense, proven technology, and client-oriented design are what make SHarchitecture-designed facilities some of the best performing facilities in the West. By incorporating evolving technology and rigorous management and quality control systems, SHarchitecture provides a full range or architectural services and an uncompromising commitment to quality architecture.

SHarchitecture is committed to sustainability. Throughout the evolution of the firm, the architecture of SHarchitecture has remained firmly grounded in the exploration of Sustainable Design. Our commitment is evidenced by our many LEED Certified/Certifiable buildings ranging from Certified to Platinum, Green Globes rated facilities and EPA Energy Star rated buildings. Our design standard baseline for all projects is equivalent to LEED Silver. Our goal is to plan and create environments that are effective and efficient not only for the present but for the next 50 years. This requires a team of designers who are experienced in providing creative - and lasting - solutions to our client’s needs. The SHarchitecture team includes members with both local experience and nationally recognized ideas - a winning combination of talent and expertise to design a remodel that is innovative, thoughtful, and responsible.

Leadership and Innovation is a testament to the company’s ability to understand, anticipate, and translate client needs into projects that evoke a shared passion and excitement. Building long-term client relationships, and attracting new clients who share the same view and successful architecture and healthy communities, are key forces in SHarchitecture’s dynamic plan.

The strength of the company is also built upon the SH team - the people, with all their exceptional talents and expertise, who play individual and complementary roles in creating great architecture, providing excellence in client service, and building a company steadfast in its devotion to community service and social responsibility. The firm donates over 10,000 man-hours annually to various charities and not-for-profit organizations throughout southern Nevada and the region. Some of these organizations include:

• Opportunity Village • Friends of Nevada Wilderness• Outside Las Vegas Foundation• Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas• Habitat for Humanity• Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth• Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation• Little League Baseball• March of Dimes• The Las Vegas Rescue Mission• Sunrise Rotary• Nevada and Las Vegas Chapters of the American Institute of Architects

Our service to our community is a grassroots effort at SHarchitecture and starts with the decision and inspiration of our team members and their desires to make a difference in the community. We have been honored over the past three decades to be a part of great architecture and making this great community a place that is built to last.

LEED/SUSTAINABILITY

The following chart illustrates 16 recent projects that are LEED, Green Globes or Energy Star facilities. Some clients have projects listed as “LEED Equivalent.” In these projects the buildings have been designed and modeled to a specific LEED rating, however the owner chose not to pursue the final submittal for full certification. They were constructed and commissioned per the requirements. SHarchitecture maintains a minimum design standard of LEED Silver for all projects in the office unless the owner specifies otherwise.

CASHMAN EQUIPMENT ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

Cashman Equipment Corporate Headquarters is a 55 acre campus of seven buildings which consolidates operations in the southern Nevada area and is the hub for their 8 outlying facilities. The Corporate Headquarter’s Administration Building features 66,000SF of administrative and training space on three floors which includes: HR, Sales, Finance, 6Sigma, Warranty, Service and IT. The campus also contains a Parts Warehouse and Sales area, Heavy Equipment Shops, Weld Shops, Rental Store, EPG (Electric Power Generator) Division and Retail Store. The design of all the facilities placed heavy emphasis on the user comfort and amenities and include a large employee cafeteria and kitchen, outdoor patios and courtyards, locker rooms with individual showers, an employee library and team collaboration spaces. The design is built around a strong corporate identity to reinforce the Caterpillar brand.

One of the most significant features of Cashman Equipment is sustainability. The campus has achieved a LEED Gold rating. To achieve this, the entire complex is serviced by an underground geothermal system to reduce HVAC operating costs by as much as 45%. Abundant natural light in 90% of occupied spaces coupled with solar shading control with exterior louvers and interior shades controlled by automatic sun sensors reduces lighting and HVAC costs as well. All interior lighting systems are controlled by occupancy and daylight sensors to further reduce utility costs. The building uses a high percentage of recycled products such as terrazzo tile with recycled glass aggregate, fabrics of 100% recycled polyester, carpet with recycled yarn and lockers made from recycled milk cartons.

SHARCHITECTURE provided programming, planning, design, interior design, equipment specification, signage, furniture and art specification and purchase, and extended CA for the fast track 15 month construction schedule.

VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE SOUTHERN NEVADA

VMSN is a non-profit organization to help bridge the gap between the working uninsured and access to vital health care services. VMSN was established to provide access to quality medical care in a clinic fostering a “culture of caring” by providing free medical services for the medically and financially disadvantaged in the community. The 11,700 SF clinic contains 9 general exam rooms, three dental operatories, lab, two procedures rooms, ophthalmologist room, pharmacy, staff training room and associated office and administration areas. The facility is designed to accommodate family visits with a large waiting room, a separate children’s area and family size exam rooms. In addition to a staff of volunteer doctors and nurses, the facility also provides social workers and family counselors for a comprehensive family treatment center. The initial facility was designed as a prototype that could be sited on smaller infill urban parcels.

The work for the preliminary programming, design and funding package portion of the project was donated by SHarchitecture as part of the firm’s ongoing commitment for giving back to the community.

HERITAGE PARK AQUATICS CENTER

The Heritage Park Aquatics Center, in Henderson, Nevada is a major landmark in the 160 Acre Heritage Park Master Plan. As a replacement to the razed Ruth pool it was designed to operate for and serve the citizens of Henderson, Nevada for the next fifty years.

The City of Henderson defined our parameters for a successful project as achieving a LEED Gold Facility with flawless indoor environment conditions and earth-friendly systems. The exterior of the building must also conform to the Heritage Park architectural design guidelines. The initial design meetings bore out the fact that not only was energy and water conservation a prime issue for the city of Henderson; but, indoor environmental quality was a real hot button. The air quality was addressed with a state of the art HVAC system that harvested heat from a neighboring building and the exhaust air to reduce energy costs and also heat the pool. The ability to reuse existing resources, such as heat, helped to keep the project in budget and to have the design completed 30 days before it was requested by the owner.

SH Architecture worked with our team of consultants to analyze various play options for the site and building including exterior splash pads and a 50 meter competition pool. These options were presented to the owner and collaborative decisions were made to finalize the design direction. Community input and meetings were also a critical part of our design process that contributed to this project’s success.

The design demonstrates the ability of SHarchitecture to adapt designs and energy strategies to what the program offers while still maintaining strict reductions in energy use and maintaining budget and schedule. Our method of maintaining consistent communication with our consultants allows us to create a collaborative design that maximizes efficiencies across all specialties to create an integrated building solution.

RTC BONNEVILLE TRANSIT CENTERThe Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada’s Bonneville Transit Center is the central hub of RTC’s transit services. Because the City of Las Vegas is a 24-hour town, offering a safe, reliable and comfortable hub for public transportation was the RTC’s central goal for the Bonneville Transit Center. Its downtown Las Vegas location makes it an ideal destination for transit-riders to access nearby businesses or to connect to routes serving the rest of Southern Nevada.

The facility was developed with a commitment to sustainability and acheived LEED Platinum certificaiton. Photovoltaic solar panels generate nearly 50 percent of the electricity for the facility. In addition to bus transfer facilities, the Bonneville Transit Center includes a 24-hour bicycle storage and repair shop, complete with showers, lockers and changing areas for bike commuters. The 18,000 SF building features 16 on-site vehicle bays, preferred parking for hybrid-vehicles, and is part of a greater downtown redevelopment plan that includes walkable urban business districts.

The Bonneville Transit Center is home to the Las Vegas Valley’s premier transit services including the Strip & Downtown Express, the Deuce on the Strip, Centennial Express, MAX, and twelve other routes. The facility accommodates the different buses that serve these routes, and is designed to adapt to changing modes of transportation. 15,000 sf of fabric and metal shade canopies protect the passenger boarding zones.

LAKE MEAD CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

Lake Mead Christian Academy is a private faith based K-12 located in Henderson, Nevada. The first phase of this multi-phased project included 47,000 square feet containing 19 secondary classrooms, 6 early education classrooms and 13 offices for administration, technology, and teachers/faculty. The new multiple-purpose room seats 300 cafeteria style and is a flexible space that can easily adapt to accommodate up to 400 people. This is the first time in the school’s 27 year history that they will have an athletic field and track facility. The 88,440 square feet of athletic field will be the home field for the Lake Mead Christian Academy Eagle’s football team.

The new campus has a build out of 48 classrooms, a gym, resource center, administrative offices and student commons coffee shop. The 13-acre site is planned for two phases. The public areas - gym/auditorium, coffee shop and administrative offices are located in the front of the facility for ease of access for the general public. Student classroom wings extend in two parallel legs of double loaded corridors this configuration provides natural daylight to all classrooms as well as the ability to grade separate the wings into upper and lower grades.

The first phase of the academy was delivered using a CMAR project delivery method with CORE Construction. One of the greatest advantages of this project being completed under a CMAR contract was the ability to handle changes in design and/or scope in the preconstruction phase. This early buy-in by the owner, contractors and architect allow the owner to save on their budget, reduce cost overruns and meet project schedules while maximizing the value in the project.

SHARCHITECTURE provided the programming, conceptual design, zoning and entitlements, preliminary cost estimates, architectural design and interior design services for the facility.

ALIANTE ANIMAL HOSPITAL

The Aliante Animal Hospital is a 6,400 SF facility with a heavy emphasis on boarding. The hospital portion contains seven exam rooms, a four station treatment area with two additional dental stations and separate rooms for endoscopy, surgery, x-ray, isolation, recovery and cat hospitalization. Pharmacy and a private doctors’ work area is located between the exam rooms and treatment room to allow easy accessibility for doctors and assistants. The boarding areas feature a range of small to large dog boarding areas and a luxury dog area. Additionally there is a glass enclosed cat boarding area adjacent to the Cat Waiting area. The boarding area also includes a separate grooming room and a covered/shaded outdoor enclosed dog run area.

The design of the hospital includes all concrete masonry walls (interior and exterior) and sealed/stained concrete floors in public areas for durability. The check-in counter is designed for abuse with solid surfacing materials and porcelain tile cladding all exposed surfaces. The open contemporary design of the entry and waiting areas allows for natural daylighting into the public spaces. The building is situated on the site as close as possible to Elkhorn Road with client parking in the existing parking area around the building. The main corner of building is elevated to balance the height of the surrounding buildings and provide a highly visible sign element for motorists on Elkhorn and Aliante Parkway.

The building is designed to be seen at night with the halo lit signs on the building, ground mounted up-lighting around the perimeter on the building and up-lighting the awning over the dog run area. The site landscaping was designed to meet the Aliante drought tolerant requirements and an artificial turf pet walking area was added between the parking and the building.

CCSD NORTHWEST CAREER & TECHNICAL ACADEMY

Designed using a truly collaborative, consensus-building process, the visioning team for the Clark County School District Career & Technical Academy includes more than 40 educators and CCSD leaders, as well as business industry partners for each of the six academies, providing insight into realistic curriculum requirements and how to simulate the real world work environment. These industry partnerships will continue once the school is open, through programmed student work experiences and guest lectures.

The school’s unique design will integrate core academics into each industry specific technical academy. To create a high performance building, which in turn will incubate high performance students, sustainable building technologies such as daylighting, reduced energy usage, and use of natural materials are essential to the building design. The Career and Technical Academy incorporates renewable resources including daylighting and geothermal heating and cooling. The school will use 30% less power than other schools of this size. This project will be the first LEED Certified school in the state of Nevada.

The school’s 9,100 SF library and support space was designed with controlled natural lighting and acoustics, and will address the needs of both students and staff. The State-of-the-Art library will have wireless internet connectivity and multimedia equipment, individual and group workspaces, presentation spaces, and a staff workroom.

The Hospitality Academy was designed to duplicate a full-service commercial kitchen and banquet hall. The 6,300 SF banquet hall is supported by a 6,000 SF commercial kitchen and bakery. In addition to serving as a banquet room, the hall is equipped for presentations and for large-group training sessions. An adjacent coffee shop and outdoor café seating give students experience beyond traditional restaurant service.

GREATER LAS VEGAS ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS (GLVAR) CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS

The Greater Las Vegas Association of REALTORS® (GLVAR) plans to move into a new home in late Fall of 2017. Located just north of Sunset Rd on Rainbow Boulevard, near the 215, GLVAR’s new headquarters will feature classrooms big enough to seat 300 members, and accommodate member services. Construction is slated to start in January 2017. The 30,000 square foot facility will be constructed as a two-story, concrete tilt-up building. It will be built with a focus on Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED). Windows will adorn the southern portion of the building facing Rainbow Blvd. The exterior color scheme of tan and brown are designed to blend in with the surrounding desert environment. There will be plenty of parking, with approximately 380 spaces surrounding the building. Current plans call for an open space environment, with inside and outside areas for members to collaborate. Plans also call for opening up the space in the new building for use by other organizations as a strategy for collaboration and non-dues revenue generation.

HARMON CORNER

Harmon Corner is a 112,000 SF, three story retail center located on a small infill site at one of the busiest intersections on the Las Vegas Strip. The project is designed to accommodate pedestrian flows along the strip and at the elevated walkways. A new elevated pedestrian bridge constructed over Harmon Avenue is also a part of the overall project. The design features first floor tenants having direct access to the sidewalk, escalators and ground level plaza, while the second floor tenants are accessed internally with a public route connecting the elevated pedestrian bridges. Third floor tenants are multiple restaurant areas with covered outdoor terraces overlooking the strip.

Harmon Corner places great emphasis on the tenant signage and visibility of the project along a “visually stimulating” area on the Las Vegas Strip. The facade features a 65’ high, 320’ long, animated LED projection screen integrated into the building. The technology not only facilitates tenant advertising, but the ability to change the facade appearance through graphics, textures and animation. The interior public spaces feature a skylit atrium with a suspended prismatic resin sculpture. The core and shell is designed to achieve LEED Silver and tenants are encouraged to pursue their own LEED certifications for their individual spaces.

SHARCHITECTURE provided programming, planning, design, interior design, signage, tenant coordination and county planning processing. The entitlement portion resulted in a reduction of overall parking and an increase in the allowable sign areas.

WHITE PINE COUNTY AQUATICS CENTER

The White Pine County Aquatics Center is a 20,000 square foot indoor aquatic center nestled in the foothills of scenic Ely, Nevada. The project was planned to augment educational programs at the adjacent high school while providing a leisure and competitive swimming location for the region.

The facility is has a 25-yard 6-lane competitive pool with starting blocks and timing system. The pool deck will provide spectator seating for competitive events than can be removed during leisure swim times to allow more use of the deck by patrons. There will also be a low-depth children’s pool that will have a zero-depth entry for young patrons. A interactive play feature and splash amenities will complete the children’s pool. Directly adjacent to the children’s pool is an exterior sun deck that will allow patrons to enjoy summer weather outdoors while enjoying the shaded pool environment indoors. This will be accessed through a glazed curtain wall that will allow natural daylight to illuminate the space inside.

The pool facility is designed to energy efficient standards and will utilize proven technologies to efficiently maintain the aquatic and environmental systems required to operate a successful natatorium.

Friends of Nevada Wilderness is excited to learn that SH Architecture has been nominated for The American Institute of Architects Firm of the Year. SH Architecture is a model corporate partner that realizes the importance of being engaged in their community beyond the goals of their organization. Their support of public lands and passion for stewardship is shown through action by many means.

Friends of Nevada Wilderness has benefited greatly from the philanthropic efforts of SH Architecture. For the last five years the team at SH Architecture has partnered with Friends in various ways. On many occasions they have participated in stewardship projects where their team volunteers on their day off to participate in a variety of projects such as planting native vegetation, improving wildlife habitat, maintaining hiking trails, and picking up litter. They have been very supportive of our Wild and Scenic Film Festival by being a consistent sponsor and by helping promote and sell tickets to the event. The team has invited us to come to their office and talk to them about public lands and their importance to our community. They’ve used their business network to benefit Friends by connecting us with a partner to purchase a work vehicle at a discount. Lastly, they are a vocal and public supporter of public lands. Most recently they were able to send a team member to Washington D.C. to discuss the need to protect public lands with our elected leaders. These are just a few reasons why SH Architecture was recognized as Friends of Nevada Wilderness Corporate Partner of the year in 2014.

The SH Architecture team is “all in” when it comes to supporting their community and public lands. From directors and architects to administrators, Friends gets the pleasure of working alongside the entire spectrum of their extraordinary team. This diversity of involvement leads to strong teamwork and camaraderie which is reflected in their volunteer stewardship.

Friends of Nevada Wilderness is grateful that SH Architecture is being recognized for the work they do in the community. We strongly believe that SH Architecture is achieving their sustainability goal of being “charged with the dual missions of addressing the global problem of climate change and the aesthetic challenge of protecting open landscapes even as we accommodate growing populations.” If there is anything else that we can do to support their recognition, please let us know.

Thank you,

Jose Witt Southern Nevada Manager Friends of Nevada Wilderness
