Ambulatory Healthcare Services(AHS) is a health system facilityof the Abu Dhabi Health ServicesCompany (SEHA). Offering a

unique combination of diagnostic andtreatment services of a hospital withpersonalized care of a healthcare center,AHS is ideal for patients seeking qualitymedical care in an accessible and afford-able setting without visiting a hospital.

A continuum of care is ensured aspatients are treated in the facilities.Qualified healthcare providersmanage andmonitor a patient’s condition continuously.Depending on an individual patient’scondition, their care can be coordinatedwith other specialist services or providersby referral to specialized ambulatorycenters, admission to an acute carehospital or a long-term care facility.

AHS has recently become the firstorganization across the world to achievethe ‘network accreditation’ from JointCommission International (JCI).

Ambulatory Healthcare Services(AHS) has become the first organ-isationacross theworld toachievethe ‘network accreditation’ from

the Joint Commission International (JCI).The accreditation, which was hitherto

granted to individualhealthcare facilities, isnow offered to healthcare networks. Thefirst-of-its-kind endorsementwas achievedfor AHS’ compliance with JCI AmbulatoryStandards (April 2010 edition) across 20 ofits healthcare centers, five disease preven-tionandscreening centers and threemobileclinic solutions.

"This is in keeping with our mission tocontinually improvecustomercare to recog-nisedinternationalstandards in linewithourvision to provide world-class healthcare toourcustomersandcommunities.WeareveryproudofthisaccomplishmentandwouldliketocongratulateouremployeesatAHSwhosehard work and dedication to excellencehelpedachievethishonour,"commentedSaifBader Al Qubaisi, MD and Chairman, SEHA,adding that one of their goals is to have allfacilities under SEHA's umbrella earn thisdistinguished seal of accomplishment.

The accreditation process, which wascompleted over a period of two weeks re-quired18monthsofpreparationandfocusedon the assessment of key service areas ac-cording to JCI standards. In addition to en-tailingpersonnel training, reviewofpoliciesand procedures, the process included thedevelopment of key teams in each of thenetwork divisions and the AHS headquar-ters. AHS facilities were also assessedthrough amock survey implemented by JCIconsultants from the US.

The internationalarmofthe independent,non-profit organisation, The Joint Commis-

sion (TJC), JCI was established in 1994 toassist internationalhealthcareorganisations,publichealthagencies,ministriesandothersto improve the quality and safety of patientcare inmore than80countries. JCIhasbeenaccrediting health care organisations since1999, and has certified approximately 450public and private healthcare organizationsin 50 countries.

In June 2011, JCI received a four-year ac-creditation by the International Society forQuality inHealthCare (ISQua).Accreditationby ISQua provides assurance that the stan-dards, training and processes used by JCI tosurvey the performance of healthcare or-ganisations meet the highest internationalbenchmarks for accreditation entities.

AHS is a unique outpatient care conceptfrom SEHA that aims to offer easy access toprimary and specialist patient care, includ-ing comprehensive laboratory and moderndiagnostic facilities. Patient Satisfaction SurveyAHS looks upon the Patient SatisfactionSurvey as a vital indicator to develop theclinics’performance throughevaluating theefficiency and effectiveness of theAmbulatory Care Clinics and AHS as awhole, as perceived by the patients. Theexercise allows the identification ofperformancegaps thatneed tobeaddressedfor ensuring thehighest level ofpatient careand satisfaction.

of the secondHealthcareQualityWeekun-der the slogan — The Face of Quality.

Theweek-longactivity,whichtookplacein November 2012 recognised and demon-strated AHS’ continuous commitment toquality improvementandsafety.Theeventwitnessed enthusiastic engagement fromstaff across the whole network of AHS in-cluding Ambulatory Care Centers, DiseasePrevention and Screening Centers, andSchool Health Services.

The event aimed to increase awarenessabout quality, foster coordination and col-laboration, and strengthen AHS’ founda-tion for futurequalityandsafety initiativesas well as accreditation projects.

Ambulatory Healthcare Services(AHS) has formed a strategic alli-ance with the British MedicalJournal (BMJ) to organize a one-

day conference addressing specific issuesrelating to Musculoskeletal Disorders(MSDs).

In a conference held last year inNovem-ber,RashidSaifAlQubaisi,ChiefExecutiveOfficer, AHS, said: “It gives us great plea-sure to organize the second internationalconference sponsored by AHS on muscu-loskeletal medicine in collaboration withBMJ. This conference gave clinicians anupdate on themanagement of keymuscu-loskeletal conditions in primary care andthe latest evidence in musculoskeletalmedicine.”

Dr Omar Al Jabri, Chief Medical Officer,AHS, commented: "Musculoskeletal issuesare very common but least covered duringour professional development. High qual-ity training and professional developmentfor all our staff, is a key strategic aimof theAHS. Partnering with a renownedmedicalorganization such as theBMJ,will help theAHS achieve its objectives."

Dr Latifa Al Ketbi, Headof CPDCommit-tee at AHS, added: “Expert speakers ledsymptom and case-based sessions, whichaimedto increasedoctors’awarenessof redflags, conditions that are easy to miss andcan lead topossiblecomplications.”Speak-ersprovidedplentyofpractical tips, includ-

Dr Elspeth Wise, who was recentlyawardedanMDfor research focusedonGPregistrars' musculoskeletal education,chaired the event and addressed the issueof shoulder pain.

ProfMartinUnderwood,headofthedivi-sion of health services atWarwickMedicalSchool,presentedasessionaboutbackandneck pain featuring 'what not tomiss'.

Dr Richard Smith, a consultant in rheu-matologyandmusculoskeletalmedicineatSalisburyHospital anda tutor at theBritishInstituteofMusculoskeletalMedicine,dis-cussed the management of patients withhip and knee pain.

The course offers a wide range of topicsincluding elbow and hand complaints, fo-cusing on arthritis, pain in the hip, knee,multiple joints, back, andshoulder, aswellassports injuriesandlearningbitesongout,osteoporosis and joint injections and themost common problems encountered ineveryday clinical practice.

Dr Christine Bowen, BMJ Masterclass,remarked, "The key messages that werecommunicatedatthemasterclasswerehowto clinically examine, diagnose and treat,exercise tips and lifestyle changes. Alsohowtopreventorminimizethedebilitatingeffects of MSD, highlighting the fact thatpreventative measures are cost-effectiveand the benefits of recognizing typicalsymptoms early."

Theconferenceattractedmore than300delegates fromtheUAEandtheregion.Thetarget audience included clinicians at alllevels, including those with an interest inmusculoskeletal medicine.

Ambulatory Healthcare Services(AHS) hosted the 'Hot Topics' GPUpdate Course for the first timein the Middle East in November

last year to facilitate busyworking generalpractitioners (GPs) to discuss commonchallenges, issuesandopportunitiesacrossgeneral practice.

The one-day course on the current ‘HotTopics’ in general practice is being run byNBMedical Education for 14 years at mul-tiple venues around the UK and Ireland.

The course aims to update, refresh andhelp GPs and family physicians create aplatform from which they can build theirlearning portfolio for revalidation. Thecourse ispreparedandpresentedby fellowGPs and gives a digest of the recent litera-ture based on what GPs need to know inthe reality of daily general practice.
