Ahrensburg culture
The Ahrensburg cultureor Ahrensburgian(11th to 10th millennia BCE) was a late
Upper Paleolithicnomadichunterculture(or technocomplex) in north-central Europeduring
theYounger r!as" the last spell o# cold at the end o# the $eichsel glaciationresulting in
de#orestation and the #ormation o# a tundrawith %ush! arctic white %irchand rowan& The most
important pre! was the wildreindeer& The earliest de#inite #inds o# arrow and %ow date to this
culture" though these weapons might ha'e %een in'ented earlier& The hrens%urgian was
preceded %! the am%urgand *edermessercultures and superseded %!mesolithiccultures
(+aglemosian)& hrens%urgian #inds were made in southern and western ,candina'ia" the
orth .erman plainand western Poland& The hrens%urgian area also included 'ast stretches
o# land now at the %ottom o# theorthandBaltic ,ea" since during the Younger r!as the
coastline too/ a much more northern course than toda!&
The culture is named a#ter a tunnel 'alle!near the 'illage o# hrens%urg" /m (12 mi)
northeast o# am%urgin the .erman state o#,chleswig-olstein" where hrens%urg #ind
la!ers were exca'ated in +eiendor#" ,tellmoorandBornec/& $hile these as well as the
ma3orit! o# other #ind sites date to the Young r!as" the hrens%urgian #ind la!er in lt
