The Ahlul Bayt (AS) are an integral part ofShia Islam. In this issue we discuss variousHadith regarding these holy personalities. It isessential to understand who they are and whattheir status is. It is our belief as shia that wewill be greeted by them on our death, they willvisit us in Barzakh, they are the meezan or thescale and they will help us cross the seerat intoheaven where we will join them.

Abdallah ibn al-Qasim from salih ibnSahl al-Hamadani who

has said that abuAbdallah (a. s.) hassaid the followingabout the verse of theHoly Quran below."God is the light of theheavens and the earth.A metaphor for Hislight is a lantern in

which there is a lampplaced in a glass. Theglass is like a shiningstar which is lit from ablessed olive tree thatis neither eastern norwestern. Its oil almostlights up even thoughit has not beentouched by the fire. It

is light upon light.God guides to Hislight whomever He

wants. God usesvarious metaphors. Hehas the knowledge ofall things." (24:35)The Imam (a.s.) saidthat the lanternmetaphorically standsfor the Holy lady,Fatima (a.s.), the lamp

stands for Imam al-Hassan (a. s.) and theglass stands for Imamal-Husayn (a.s.). Theshining star stands forthe Holy lady Fatima(a.s.) who shinesamong the ladies ofthe world. The blessedolive tree stands for

Prophet Abraham.Neither eastern norwestern means not

Jewish nor Christian. Its oil almost lightsup means that italmost bursts up withknowledge. Light upon light means thatthere will one Imamafter the other Imam(a.s.) God guides to

His light who ever Hewants means thatAllah guides throughthe Imams whomeverHe wants." AboutGod uses variousmetaphors I said, "Orit (the deeds of theunbelievers) are likethe darkness of a deep,

stormy sea with layersof giant waves, covered by dark

clouds. It is darknessupon darknesswhereby even if onestretches out his handshe can not see them. One can have no lightunless God gives himlight. (24:40)

[38:71] When thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I amabout to create a mortal out of mire,[38:72] And when I have fashioned him and breathedinto him of My Spirit, then fall down before himprostrate,[2:31] And He taught Adam all the names, thenshowed them to the angels, saying: Inform Me of thenames of these, if ye are truthful.[2:32] They said: Be glorified! We have no knowledgesaving that which Thou hast taught us. Lo! Thou, onlyThou, art the Knower, the Wise.[2:33] He said: O Adam! Inform them of their names, and when he had informed them of their names, Hesaid: Did I not tell you that I know the secret of theheavens and the earth? And I know that which yedisclose and which ye hide.

[38:73] The angels fell down prostrate, every one,[38:74] Saving Iblis; he was scornful and became oneof the disbelievers.[38:75] He said: O Iblis! What hindereth thee from

falling prostrate before that which I have created with both My hands? Art thou too proud or art thouof the high exalted?[2:35] And We said: O Adam! Dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden, and eat ye freely (of thefruits) thereof where ye will; but come not nigh this tree lest ye become wrong-doers.

His reality has wornout the ability of sightand His Own- self has

uprooted the(spreading) vines ofimaginations. Whoevertries to describe Allahhas thought of Him aslimited and whoeverconsiders Him limitedhe has enumeratedHim and whoeverenumerates Him hehas invalidated Hiseternity.

H 357, Ch. 23, h 5Muhammad ibn abuAbdallah ibnMuhammad ibnIsmail has narratedfrom al-Husayn ibn al-Hassan from Bakr ibnSalih from al-Hassanibn Said from al-

Haytham ibnAbdallah fromMarwan ibn Salih whohas said that Imam abuAbdallah has said thefollowing. "Allahcreated us and made itwell. He gave us ourform and formed itwell. He made us Hiseyes among Hisservants and His

speaking tongue in Hiscreatures. He made usHis open hands overHis servants withkindness and mercy. He has made us hisface through which Heis approached and hisdoor that shows the

way leading to Him.He made us Histreasurers in theheavens and on earth.Through us the treesgive fruit and the fruitsripen and the canalsflow. Through us theskies send rain andplants grow on earth.Through our worshipAllah is worshippedand were we not thereAllah would not havebeen worshipped."

[5:15] O People of theScripture! Now hathOur messenger comeunto you, expoundingunto you much of thatwhich ye used to hidein the Scripture, andforgiving much. nowhath come unto youlight from Allah andplain Scripture,[Pooya/AliCommentary 5:15]

"Hide" implies bothsuppression orconcealment anddistortion ormisinterpretation, which the Jews and theChristians employed todeny the prophethoodof the Holy Prophet;and "you" refers to

    them and theirforefathers.

In their books therewere many clearprophecies of theadvent of the HolyProphet, but theychanged some and

disguised others. Therewere also other truths, concealed by them, which have been againrevealed in the Quran, omitting those which

pertained to theparticular age of theirearlier prophets, andwere not needed formankind any more.

The "light" stands forthat light about whichthe Holy Prophet hadsaid:

"I and Ali are of oneand the same lightwhich Allah created asthe first creation."

Kitabun mubin refersto thesamit(silent) aswell the natiq(speaking) Quran-Muhammad and ali

Muhammad. Throughthe Holy Prophet andhis Ahl ul Bayt andthe Quran Allah guidesthose who follow Hispleasure to the path of

peace, out of darknessinto light, by His will

    (bi-idhnihi).

[5:55] Your guardiancan be only Allah;and His messengerand those whobelieve, who establishworship and pay thepoordue, and bowdown (in prayer).[Pooya/AliCommentary 5:55]All the commentatorsunanimously hold, asQushaji admits in theSharh al Tajrid on thesubject of imamat, thatthis verse refers to Aliwhen he gave his ring

Existence of thingsAll things have four 'realities'. You see a thing, you conceive it in your brain, you write down itsname and you say its name. Allah cannot be seen

and cannot be comprehended. The Ahlul baytwere the first ones to call Allah 'Allah' and thefirst ones to write down the name 'Allah'.

to a beggar whilebowing down in thecourse of his prayers.Nasa-i has alsorecorded this traditionin his Sahih An-Nisaai, and so has theauthor of Al-JaameBayn al Sihah al Sittah(corroboration of thesix authentic books) indiscussion of thecommentary on al Ma-idah, and so does Tha-labi in his TafsirKabir, and al Balkhi in

his Yanabi has copiedit from Ahmad binHanbal's Musnad, vol.5, margin of p. 38.Please refer to thecommentary on thisverse in Wahidi's bookAsbab al Nuzul (thecircumstances ofdescent) whichcontains the traditionrelated by Ibn Abbas.Al Khatib hasrecorded the traditionin Al Muttafiq, andIbn Marduwayh andAbu Shaykh in theirMusnads. It ismentioned in Kanz alUmmal, vol. 6, p. 391,tradition no. 5991. InGhayat al Maraam, chapter 18, there are

twenty four traditionsfrom sources otherthan the Ahl ul Bayt, all supporting theabove statement aboutthe descent of thisverse. In this verse theword wali has been

used in the meaningof guardian ormaster or who holdsauthority superior toothers. Please refer tothe origin of the wordwali in Sihah orMukhtar al Sihah orany other gooddictionary. Thelexicographers haveexplained that he whomanages the affairs ofand exercisesauthority for anotherperson is the wali of

that person. Thisverse, therefore, means that those whomanage the affairs ofthe people (mankind)are superior to allmen, and certainlythey are Allah, Hismessenger, the HolyProphet, and Ali, whopossesses all thequalificationsenumerated in thisverse. Allah hassimultaneouslyconfirmed Hiswilayah (superiorauthority), that of Hisprophet and his wali(Ali) in unbrokensuccession. Allah'swilayah is universal,so likewise, the

wilayah of the HolyProphet and his wali(Ali) must be so.

[2:257] Allah is theProtecting Guardianof those who believe. He bringeth them outof darkness into light. As for those who

disbelieve, theirpatrons are falsedeities. They bringthem out of light intodarkness. Such arerightful owners of theFire. They will abidetherein.[Pooya/AliCommentary 2:257]Wali literally means"be close to or standimmediately by" - anearness or contactbetween two objectswithout anyintermediary. It is used

to refer to suchcloseness as existsbetween brothers, friends, neighbors andhelpers. A master isalso called walibecause of his holdover his slaves - thehold brings the slaveclose to the master.Any one whoexercises authoritybecomes a wali ofthose over whom theauthority is exercised;therefore, a guardian,an administrator or aruler is also calledwali. Here, it meansthat Allah is thenearest authority overthe faithful; and thefalse gods the

authorities over thosewho disbelieve, andwho push them intohell for ever.Nur means the lightof the faith or thetrue awareness aboutAllah and firmconviction in His

authority.Zulumat means thedarkness of thedisbelief in Allah orthe ignorance anduncertainty aboutAllah.ConclusionAllah has created menfrom mire, jinn andangels from smokelessfire. The noor of theahlul bayt was createdfirst. Everything elsewas created in theirlove. Allah cannot be

seen nor can He becomprehended. Wecan only write Hisname and speak Hisname. The Ahlul Baytwere the first to speakand write Allah. Theywere the ones to doHis tasbeeh for thousands of years. The angels learnedhow to praise Allah byobserving the AhlulBayt. When Adamwas created Allahtaught Adam and theangels all the names. On being tested Adamcould identify thenames of the noor ofthe Ahlul Baythowever the angelswere unable to deduce

this. Allah then choseAdam as His caliph onearth and in obedienceof His command theangels fell inprostration. Iblis didn'tand by Allah's mercyis allowed to live tillthe day of judgment.
