Bark Park Parking Options
Presented By: Rick PruittChief of Police
Item # 7City Council Meeting
March 14, 2016
2
● Staff has studied several options to provide parking for Bark Park visitors that will relieve parking congestion in the 100-200 blocks Alamo Heights Boulevard, southbound
• The narrow roadway width of 18-20 feet contribute to concerns for fire apparatus travel
Background

4
● The first option is to improve the right-of-way on the west side of the roadway for a distance of 215 feet by widening the roadway 3-4 feet for visitor parking
• This option would include improving the east shoulder by adding 2-3 feet of paved roadway surface for vehicle travel
Parking Option 1
5
• Striping would be applied to the roadway surface to push traffic away from the parking area on the west side of the roadway
● This option also creates seven (7) 60°angle head-in parking spaces in the right-of-way adjacent to the little league practice field
Parking Option 1
6
7
● Projected estimate for Option 1 is $10,000
• Includes the cost of road grade material, asphalt, paver rental, striping and debris removal
Parking Option 1
8
● This option improves the right-of-way for visitor parking immediately behind the Bark Park where the Normandy extension is platted
• This option provides an area approximately 260’ long and 45’ deep that could handle 22 to 24 vehicles

● Project estimate for Option 2 is $15,300
• This estimate covers the costs for the same materials, striping and equipment as Option 1
• Additional costs would be incurred for other related improvements or adding restricted parking locations
Option 2
12
● Staff studied the viability of a crosswalk from the little league parking area to the southwest corner of Alamo Heights Boulevard at the southbound leg
• This location presents a number of challenges to assure the crosswalk accessibility points meet accessibility standards of the Americans with Disability Act
Crosswalk Option
13
● Elevation difference from the little league parking lot to the street would create the need to reduce the grade
• It would also be necessary to cap over a storm water drainage culvert and add safety railing

● Estimated cost of this project is $30,000
• This estimate includes using an outside contractor to construct the accessibility points, painting the crosswalk and crosswalk approaches
• Addition of a concrete or crushed granite pathway would be extra
