Alyssa and Lauren on Overlap - Racing for Change

- Racing for Change -Alyssa Pepsny and Lauren Pepsny

Alyssa (age 15) and Lauren (age 16) are members of the Atlantic Highlands Sailing Education Program (AHSEP) and have grown up

racing in the AHYC Ms. Race the last 5 years. This is a big occasion for the girls and they are excited to be part of this prestigious charity event. �

The theme for this year's Ms. Race is Racing for Change. This theme emphasizes the reason why women compete in this race, which is to help the women and families who are in an abusive situation whilst having a good time with friends. Every year more and more people participate in the Ms. Race for the chance to change the lives of 1.3 million women who are abused each year by their partner.

The Ms. Race is a one day regatta, which takes place in the Sandy Hook bay area. The competitors' boats are filled with crew of all ages and with all different sailing backgrounds. The children that take part in the sailing event learned how to sail in the Atlantic Highlands Sailing Education Program. Through the Ms. Race we are bringing awareness to domestic violence. The proceeds that are raised through the regatta are given to 180 Turning Lives Around.

Each year the proceeds from the Ms. Race go to 180 Turning Lives Around. 180 Turning Lives Around is a New Jersey based charity which has the goal of ending domestic violence and sexual assaults in our community. The 180 charity organization provides support to victims with various programs such as counseling, legal assistance, safe houses, hotlines, and other forms of support. The wide age gap allows women and their daughters to learn about how to help those in abusive situations while building their sailing experience.

We are hopeful that more people will join us this year to race for change.
