AgroecologyEcological understanding of farming systems
What is agroecology?
Agroecology is
a scientific discipline that uses ecological theory to study, design, manage and evaluate agricultural systems that are productive but also resource conserving
concerned with the maintenance of a productive agriculture that sustains yields and optimizes the use of local resources while minimizing the negative environmental and socio-economic impacts of modern technologies.. AgroecologyScience, technology, object, goal & motivationApplicationAgroecological research
considers interactions of all important biophysical, technical and socioeconomic components of farming systems, and
regards these systems as the fundamental units of study, where mineral cycles, energy transformations, biological processes and socioeconomic relationships are analyzed as a whole in an interdisciplinary fashion
THE MEANING AND PRINCIPLES OF AGROECOLOGY
The particular methods or technologies promoted by agroecologists build upon local skills and are adapted to local agroecological and socioeconomic conditions
The implementation of such agroecological principles within the context of a pro-poor, farmer-centered rural development strategy is essential for healthy, equitable, sustainable and productive systems
THE MEANING AND PRINCIPLES OF AGROECOLOGY
Agroecology is the holitstic study of agroecosystems, including all environmental and human elements. It focuses on the form, dynamics and functions of their interrelationships and the processes in which they are involved.
An area used for agricultural production, e.g. a field, is seen as a complex system in which ecological processes found under natural conditions also occur, e.g. nutrient cycling, predator/prey interactions, competition, symbiosis and successional changes.
THE MEANING AND PRINCIPLES OF AGROECOLOGY
Implicit in agroecological research is the idea that, by understanding these ecological relationships and processes, agroecosystems can be manipulated to improve production and to produce more sustainably, with fewer negative environmental or social impacts and fewer external inputs (Altieri 1995)
The design of such systems is based on the application of the following ecological principles (Reinjntjes et al. 1992)
ecological principles
Enhance recycling of biomass and optimizing nutrient availability and balancing nutrient flow.
Securing favorable soil conditions for plant growth, particularly by managing organic matter and enhancing soil biotic activity.
Minimizing losses due to flows of solar radiation, air and water by way of microclimate management, water harvesting and soil management through increased soil cover.
Species and genetic diversification of the agroecosystem in time and space.
Enhance beneficial biological interactions and synergisms among agrobiodiversity components thus resulting in the promotion of key ecological processes and services
Agroecosystem vs. natural ecosystem
Natural ecosystem is closed, or at least, unmanaged ecosystem
Closed ecosystemall elements recycled through ecosystemnot often pure closed ecosystems anymorehumans frequently involved
Agroecosystem is an open ecosystem, or managed ecosystem:
Producer moves plants, animals, environmental factors (fertilizers, feed) in & out of ecosystem
Will not continue on its own without management
If left alone, would progress toward closed ecosystem, but probably not the same as original ecosystem before agriculture without human input again

Agroekologi Ekologi pemahaman tentang sistem pertanian
Apa agroekologi?
