GrowingfreshwatersupplythroughdesalinationDesalinationprocessisexpensiveandenergy- intensive,butcostshavebeendeclining.Desalinationistheprocessofremovingsaltsandothermineralsfromseaorsalinewatertoproduceapotablesupplyofwater.Currently,thereareapproximately15,000desalinationplantsworldwide,themajorityofwhicharelocatedinwater-scarceregionsliketheMiddleEast.ItisestimatedthatSaudiArabiahasabout25%oftheglobaldesalinationcapacity,whichprovidesroughly70%ofthecountry’swaterusedincitiesandbytheindustrialsector.Amidconcernsaboutthegrowingwaterdemandandpotentialshortages,othercountrieslikeAustralia,ChinaandtheUnitedStates,havealsostartedtoexpandtheirdesalinationcapacity.
