Description of Environmental Indicators (Ambient Air Quality in Urban Areas )
Definition: Absolute values of concentration of pollutants in the air measured in urban areas
Measurement: Microgram (mcg) in cubic meter (m3) of air
Issue:Increased concentrations of air pollutant substances in ambient air can have a range of impacts on human health, ecosystems, and vegetation. Particulate matter (PM10), smaller than 10 (mcg) in diameter, is recognized internationally as a priority pollutant since long-term exposure or short-term inhalation of high concentrations can reduce lung capacity and increase asthmatic and respiratory symptoms.
Agreements and targets: The optimization of standards for ambient air pollution in cities with respect to environmental impacts and to combined health impacts (based on WHO criteria). In the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the council of ministries issued decree No 12 of 2006 on regulation concerning protection of Air from pollution.
Data collection and calculations: Air quality data in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is collected from a network of fixed and mobile monitoring stations located in industrial, residential/urban, road side, and city centre. The locations of the stations are determined through inclusive site evaluation, emission inventories, and atmospheric dispersion modeling.
Data sources and reporting: Data on ambient air pollution concentrations are routinely collected from the monitoring stations network. General data on air quality in cities are published in SCAD statistical yearbook and annual environmental publications.
