Agriculture accounts for 5.3 % of the to-tal employment in Brittany (3.0 % in France).
69,887 people are employed on farms.
The number of family workers has de-clined an average of 2.8 % per year between 2000 and 2011 over this period, the number of employees rose by 1.1 % per year. The share of paid farm workers in agriculture has increased from 27 % in 2000 to 36 % in 2011.
29 % of paid farm work is in specialised crops (vegetables, horticulture, plant nurser-ies…) and 44 % in livestock farming (milk pro-duction, meat production …).
63 % of paid farm workers have a per-manent contract.

1 • The agricultural population in Brittany
66 % of farmers work in partnership, 27 % are women and 24 % are over 55 years.
Young farmers set up their own business at an average age of 30 with a higher level of education (33 % have a level III or IV). 32 % are women.

The entire region of Brittany has been declared as « zone vulnerable » to nitrate pollution. Breton farmers are involved in various actions to be implemented, what-ever their production is.

64 agricultural colleges in Brittany welcomed 17,745 students in 2011 (19 % in public schools and 81 % in private schools).
The number of students has increased (+3.0 % between 2010 and 2011).
The 11 training Centers have formed 1,417 apprentices.
After several year decreasing, the number of students has been increasing in production sector for two years.

Evolution of beef production between 2011 to 2010 :• Total : (-4.9 %)• Butchered veal : 40,520 tons (-10.6 %)• Dairy cows : 65,648 tons (+0.3 %)• Dairy heifers : 17,789 tons (-2.6 %)• Males : 45,113 tons (-7,6 %).
The average size of the herds of nurse cows has slightly increased : 17 cows per farm at the end of 2011.
The decrease of the number of farm with nurse cows (-5 %) is more important than the decrease of number of cows (-4 %), that’s why the size of herd has slightly increased between 12/31/2010 and 12/31/2011.

A turnover of 18 billion euros is gener-ated by the processing industry in Brittany in 2009 (13,2 % of the industry’s national turnover).
The meat industry in Brittany accounts for 43 % of total food processing industry turnover.
