Introduction

Hydroponics can be defined as the science of growing plants in a mediumother than soil. The word hydroponics is derived from.two Greek words:"hydro" (water) and "ponos" (labour). The plants that are grown inhydroponics are fed with a nutrient solution. The nutrient solution consists ofwater into which are mixed all the essentials mineral elements needed by theplants for their growth and development.

Hydroponics cultivation is usually carried out under protected structures. InMauritius, both imported and locally mounted structures have beenimplemented by hydroponics promoters for cultivation of either vegetablesand or ornamentals.

The price of imported greenhouse structures, coverings and fertigationsystem ranges from Rs 1500/m2 to Rs 2500/mZ, depending on the model. Thelocally mounted tunnel is around Rs 1400/m2

The cost for land preparation and mounting of greenhouse varies from Rs300/m2

- Rs 400/m2 and annual operation cost (including cost of growingmedium, seedling production, fertilizers, pesticides, chemicals, water,electricity, farm equipments and labour) is around Rs 635/m2

The price difference between locally mounted and imported greenhousestructure is mainly due to the fact that each item has to be bought separately.There is also an additional cost for bending of galvanized pipes, transportofmaterials and of numerous activities. Finally since only a few contractors areavailable for mounting oflocal greenhouse the labour cost is high.

Otherwise, promoters have the choice to import their own greenhouses andcarry out assembly by a local contactor or by the promoter himself.

Hence, all promoters have a wide range of options for them to choose from asfar as greenhouse structures and fertigation systems are concerned.

Locally mounted Greenhouse

Weak points:(a) Need skilled workers to bend pipes and to construct greenhouse.(b) Need facilities for purchase and transport of each item required.(c) For structure that is welded, it is not easy to dismantle.
