The next US-CERN-Japan-Russia Joint International Accelerator School will be held in Newport Beach, California from November 5 – 14, 2014 and will concentrate on “Beam Loss and Accelerator Protection”.
This school is intended for physicists and engineers who are or may be engaged in the design, construction, and/or operation of accelerators with high power photon or particle beams and/or accelerator sub-systems with large stored energy. We will present the methods and technologies to identify, mitigate, monitor, and manage the technical risks associated with or operation of accelerators with high power beams or sub-systems with large stored energy the fault or failure modes of which can result in substantial damage to accelerator systems or significance interruption of facility operations. At the completion of the school the participants should be able understand the physical phenomena that can damage machine sub-systems or interrupt operations and to analyze an accelerator facility to produce register of technical risks and the corresponding risk mitigation and management strategies. Attendees residing in the U.S. are encouraged to enroll for University of New Mexico credit. Participants who successfully complete their coursework will earn 2 units of UNM graduate credit.
A limited number of scholarships are available. Please visit http://uspas.fnal.gov/programs/JAS/JAS14.shtml for the program, detailed information and an application form. TIARA – Survey Test Infrastructures and Accelerator Research Area
Dear colleagues,
Many thanks to all speakers and participants in Tuesday’s IoP PAB Group meeting on ‘training the next generation’. By request we have put the presentations on a www page:
http://tiara.physics.ox.ac.uk/training/index.html
We hope that these will provide a good snapshot of current training activities, and a resource for everyone interested in this topic.
Best wishes,
Phil BurrowsIoP PAB Group Chair
The findings are revealing: an overall growth of 18% in personnel is projected over the next 5 years, driven largely by the construction of new facilities on this timescale. However a majority of respondents report difficulties in hiring suitable personnel, most notably engineers, and skills shortages are reported in a number of critical areas. In 2011 the members of TIARA Work Package 5 “Education & Training” (WP5) conducted a survey of provision of accelerator science training across Europe which revealed some interesting facts (see Accelerating News issue 2). In our follow-on survey we have attempted to gauge the market needs for accelerator-related personnel by surveying major customers: laboratories, universities, companies and medical facilities that design, build or operate accelerators. We assessed the types, numbers, and qualification levels of required personnel, as well as issues of recruitment and skills shortages. The response was outstanding: 70 research institutes and 44 companies from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom completed the survey, accounting for more than 4500 personnel engaged in accelerator-related activities. The findings are described in full in the Needs for Accelerator Scientists report released recently.

The cost for 1 student for 1 course is 1500€ (registration fees) + 500€ (accommodation)
If the candidate comes from one of the Partner Universities, a Master or a PhD student will get the special price for the registration fees
The scholarship might include an amount for travelling (a flight ticket is about 250€) and an amount for perdiem (assuming 50€ per week):
Cost for one JUAS studentOne course for 5 weeks
ÞTotal cost for 1 course = 2000€ + 250€ + 5x50€ = 2500€ (upper limit)
