Call to Worship Pastor Joel Langholz & WWU students We are branches, rooted in the vine of Christ. We come because we seek to abide in Christ. The branches that remain in the vine bear much fruit. We come because we long to be spiritually vibrant, alive, productive. If we abide in Christ, then Christ’s words will abide in us. We come because we strive to be faithful disciples. We gather for worship now to the glory of the One God: Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. May we grow wildly as God tends us lovingly. Amen.

First Reading: 1 John 4:13-21 Katie, UW student By this we know that we abide in God and God in us, because we have been given of God’s own Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as the Son is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoev-er fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because God first loved us. Those who say, “I love God,” and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a sister or brother whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from God is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Let us pray: O God, you give us your Son as the vine apart from whom we cannot live. Nourish our life in his resurrection, that we may bear the fruit of love and know the fullness of your joy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Offertory Christ Has Risen John Bell Christ has risen while earth slumbers, Christ has risen where hope died,

as he said and as he promised, as we doubted and denied. Let the moon embrace the blessing; let the sun sustain the cheer;

let the world confirm the rumor: Christ is risen, God is here!

Christ has risen for the people whom he died to love and save; Christ has risen for the women bringing flowers to grace his grace.

Christ has risen for disciples, huddled in an upstairs room. He whose word inspired creation can’t be silenced by the tomb.

Christ has risen to companion former friends who fear the night,

sensing loss and limitation where their faith had once burned bright. They bemoan what is no longer, they expect no hopeful sign

till Christ ends their conversation, breaking bread and sharing wine.

Christ has risen and forever lives to challenge and to change all whose lives are messed or mangled, all who find religion strange.

Christ is risen, Christ is present making us what he has been: evidence of transformation in which God is known and seen.

Forum Schedule for May

May 2nd – Connie McLoud, Cultural Director and Elder with the Puyallup Tribe, will come to share her expe-riences as a Native American. Her active involvement in the Puyallup Canoe Family, in participating in vari-ous ceremonies as well as sharing stories and providing blessings for special events will be a part of her presentation. The Puyallup Tribe is the home Tribe of the land on which our church resides. This is a special privilege for us to have Elder Connie McLoud speak to us.

May 9th – The history and effect of Boarding Schools and forced adoptions for Native Americans in the U.S. will be our discussion topic. There will be videos and audio recordings of people who went through it or whose relatives did. These efforts were meant to "Kill the Indian, Save the man" and have had an enduring effect on Native American people.

May 16th - Congregational meeting - no forum

May 23rd - Native American Spirituality and Worship is our topic. As in the Protestant church there are nu-merous expressions of one's religious understanding within the various Native American communities. We will touch on some of those in our time together. Native Americans are in deep relationship with the Creator and this shows in their ceremonies and thoughts.

May 30th – Memorial Day Weekend - no forum
