Theothercriticalpieceofequipmentneededtomakeanoisefiguremeasurementisanoisesource.NoisesourcescontributetoyourtotalmeasurementnoisefigureviaENRuncertaintyandinputmismatch.
Theoutputofanoisesourceisdefinedintermsofitsfrequencyrangeandexcessnoiseratio(ENR).NominalENRvaluesof6dBand15dBarecommonlyavailable.AlowENRnoisesourcewillminimizeerrorduetonoisedetectornon-linearity.Thiserrorwillbesmallerifthemeasurementismadeoverasmaller,andthereforemorelinear,rangeoftheinstrument’sdetector.A6dBnoisesourceusesasmallerdetectorrangethana15dBnoisesource.
Usea15dBnoisesourcefor: • General-purposeapplicationstomeasurenoisefigureupto30dB •User-calibratingthefullestdynamicrangeofaninstrumentbeforemeasuring high-gaindevices
Usea6dBnoisesourcefor: •Measuringadevicewithgainthatisespeciallysensitivetochangesinthe sourceimpedance •Thedeviceundertest(DUT)hasaverylownoisefigure •Thedevicenoisefiguredoesnotexceed15dB
Agilentoffersthreedifferentfamiliesofnoisesources,andallmaybeusedinconjunctionwiththeNFA.Thesmartnoisesourcessimplifymeasurementset-upandimproveaccuracyandreliability,automaticallydownloadingelectronicallystoredcalibrationdatatotheinstrumenttosavevaluabletime.The346Seriesnoisesourcesarethetraditionalandmostcost-effectivesolution,offeringthewidestrangeoffrequencycoverage.Lastly,Agilentoffershigh-frequencynoisesourcesforcustomersmakingmeasurementsabove26.5GHz.Ifonesourcedoesnotincludebothfrequencyranges,asecondsourcewillberequired.Asecondnoisesourcemayalsobenecessarywhenmeasuringanon-frequencytranslatingdevicewithlownoisefigureandhighgain.
