JOAN AND DR. MICHAEL SCHULTZ HONORED AT LIVE! FROM BETH ELBy: Brandon Chiat, Digital Media Manager

A stainless steel cocoon hangs in Dr. Michael Schultz’s office.

The Michael Aram sculpture is a gift from a former patient, inscribed with a message of gratitude: “From all your butterflies past, present, and future, you cocooned us in your kindness, caring, concern and wisdom and we emerged as beautiful butterflies.”

For over 35 years, Dr. Schultz has led a team of breast oncology experts on a shared mission: to conquer breast cancers as early as possible.

“The Talmud teaches us that whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world,” said Dr. Schultz.

Along with his wife Joan, Dr. Schultz established the Geraldine G. Schultz Fund for Breast Cancer Survivors in honor of his late mother, a 40-year breast cancer survivor.

“Dr. Schultz is a pioneer in his field,” said John Abosch, the Event Chair for LIVE! From Beth El. “He and Mrs. Schultz are leaders in the Baltimore community, but more than that, their devotion to Beth El is a great source of pride for our congregation.”

The Schultz family is a fixture at High Holy Day services. “Rabbi Loeb used to joke that I’m the only person sitting in between my wife and ex-wife,” Dr. Schultz said.

Their family dynamic represents Beth El’s inclusive community.

“When Michael and I began dating, he had divorced, and I wasn’t Jewish, but Rabbi Loeb accepted us unconditionally,” Mrs. Schultz said.

“I would never have experienced the wonderful traditions and warmth of the Jewish community were it not for Rabbi Loeb and Beth El.”

Raised as a Roman Catholic, Joan Schultz never felt connected to the church. She was first exposed to Jewish culture and tradition as a nurse working at Sinai Hospital. “Judaism fascinated me, so I began asking my Jewish patients and colleagues about their faith,” she said.

Among those who answered Joan’s curiosity was a handsome doctor named Michael Schultz.

“As our relationship grew, we decided to make a Jewish home together,” Mrs. Schultz said. “I wanted to drink the ‘house wine’ so to speak.”

So, at 28-years-old, with the support of Michael and under the guidance of Rabbi Mark Loeb, Joan began the formal conversion process at Beth El. Converting to Judaism as a young-adult gave Joan a unique perspective into the sensibilities of modern Jews.

“[Judaism] must embrace change,” she said. “The fact that Beth El welcomes interfaith families and exposes them to Jewish values and traditions ensures the future of our faith.”

Not surprisingly, Michael and Joan Schultz were ecstatic when Beth El officially embraced interfaith families as members.

“Rabbi Schwartz and the clergy encouraged our entire congregation to embrace families of mixed religious backgrounds,” Dr. Schultz said. “They expertly developed an inclusive rather than a divisive approach.”

“We are thrilled to honor Joan and Michael at LIVE! and feel truly blessed that they are Beth El members,” Rabbi Steve Schwartz said. “Their respect for the Jewish tradition, commitment to our community, and vision for our congregation have contributed to Beth El’s growth.”

Beth El has a long history of progressive values, made possible in part by the Schultz’s generosity. In 1986, Rabbi Loeb approached Michael and Joan with a vision for building a mikveh at Beth El.

In a letter to Dr. Schultz, Rabbi Loeb wrote: “I can’t begin to thank you adequately for your gift to the mikveh project. It will provide an opportunity for many to enter the life of our people. It is especially meaningful that it honors Joan. She is a special addition to the family of Jewish generations.”

Michael and Joan are aware of their place within the Jewish generations. Michael’s mother taught Joan how to keep a kosher home and even passed along her recipe for matzoh ball chicken soup. Now, Michael and

Joan welcome their children in from out-of-town to celebrate the High Holy Days as a family and teach their grandchildren to be proud of their Jewish identities.

“We taught our children to live according to Jewish teachings,” Mrs. Schultz said. “Even though some of our children have raised interfaith families, they’ve passed on our traditions to their own children.”

Appropriately, the Schultz’s latest philanthropic gift honors the very concept of l'dor v'dor.

“The entire Beth El community is deeply grateful to the Schultz’s for their leading gift to Generations Park,” said Amanda Beitman, Beth El’s Director of Development. “Having made their Jewish home at Beth El, it’s only appropriate that Joan and Michael helped create Generations Park, which will provide a bucolic space for future generations of Beth El families to connect with their Jewish community.”

From Britot, B'nai Mitzvot, weddings, funerals, and all the moments in between the Schultz’s have experienced the cycle of Jewish life at Beth El.

“Beth El is a place to experience every life stage,” Mrs. Schultz said. “Generations Park is a beautiful space to honor those moments.”

Dr. Schultz shares his wife’s vision. “We want future generations to remain active in Jewish life,” he said. “We hope Generations Park will become a physical space where Jewish traditions can be celebrated and passed down from grandparents to grandchildren.”

KEVIN NEALONKevin sets himself apart from other comedic performers with his unique sense of humor, dry wit and likeable demeanor. Nealon is best known for his nine-year stint as a cast member of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, and has received critical acclaim for his role

in the Showtime series, Weeds. Kevin is currently seen as one of the stars on the CBS-TV comedy series Man With A Plan.

Nealon has found great comedic success in his extensive film career. In Anger Management, he played opposite Jack Nicholson and fellow Saturday Night Live comedian, Adam Sandler. He and Sandler also teamed up in Blended, Eight Crazy Nights, The Wedding Singer, Happy Gilmore and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan. In Joe Dirt, Nealon joined another Saturday Night Live alumnus David Spade.

As one of the longest running cast members on NBC’s Saturday Night Live (1986-1995), Nealon created some of the show’s most memorable characters, including ‘The Subliminal Man’ and ‘Hans and Franz.’ Nealon’s reoccurring role as an anchor on ‘Weekend Update’ helped make the sketch a show staple. In 1988 Kevin earned an Emmy Award nomination as part of the SNL writing team.

NEW SPECIAL PERFORMANCE

Kevin replaces Richard Lewis who is unable to travel due to a health issue. We hope that Richard Lewis recovers quickly and we also hope that he can join us at future date.

VOWSBy Rabbi Steven Schwartz

He fed her tenderly, a soft smile on his lips and a gentle glow in his eyes. They had a table for two, at the back of the restaurant, just at the edge of the candle light. She was dressed elegantly, her eyes sparkled, she smiled, they talked and laughed together, their conversation a product of years and years of shared journey.

The waiters hovered, not too much, but they kept an eye on the couple. Perhaps they knew the story, the background, what had happened, the history of what led them to this moment. It was a fancy place, fine French food, the wait staff in black tie, the wine list extensive, the dishes classic and perfectly cooked. Each table was occupied, the hum and buzz of conversation filled the small

room. You could hear the sizzling of meats and fish from the open kitchen.

It was such a small table that they shared. Looking casually about the room you would never have noticed they were different than any of the other couples, that their table was different than any of the other tables. But he was feeding her. Patiently cutting her food, gently reaching a fork across the table to her mouth, then wiping her lips with a soft white napkin. Each forkful was filled with such devotion and love and care.

It was her hands. When not at rest they shook terribly, and she never would have been able to force those trembling hands to make the short trek from plate to mouth. I thought

about it for a long time afterward. Did they talk about it? Discuss what it would be like to be out in public? The potential embarrassment of it, the staring, perhaps the questions or well-intended yet uncomfortable comments?

There was such peace to it all. This is who we are, let it be and we’ll live our lives. We need not hide, there is no shame in this. Sadness perhaps, challenge and difficulty, struggle even. But it was life in all its beauty and frailty and humanity. And they were living it together, as they had for so many years.

FAITH, LIBERATION & REDEMPTIONSeder Teachings from the Shared African American and Jewish ExperienceMonday, April 1 from 7:00-8:30 PM in the Agus LibraryJoin Reverend Doctor Bernard “Skip” Keels, Director of the Morgan State University Interfaith Chapel and Rabbi Etan Mintz, spiritual leader of B’nai Israel, for this insightful evening of dialogue just in time for the holidays. American Jews and African Americans have shared a special kinship largely due to a shared narrative of slavery and liberation going back to the Israelite experience in Egypt and the African-American one in this country. Using the Haggadah, we will explore these shared themes as we journey through this ancient text and reflect on the shared struggles, stories and themes of our two peoples. We will focus on the relevance of these parallels to contemporary Jewish and African-American relations today.

teaches courses on the Arab-Israeli Conflict and on Russian Foreign Policy. Since the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, US-Israeli relations have come a long way. In 1948, while US President Harry Truman was supportive of Israel, his Secretary of State, George Marshall, and his Secretary of Defense, James Forrestal, opposed not only the recognition of Israel but also economic and military support for the newly proclaimed Jewish State. Now in 2018, President Donald Trump is an enthusiastic supporter of Israel, as are his Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense, sending Israel $3.8 billion in annual military support. This course will evaluate the ups and downs of the US-Israeli relationship since 1948 and will speculate about the nature of the US-Israeli relationship in the aftermath of the Trump Presidency.

FEE: $45 for members; $55 for non-members. Registration is required.

THE MENDELSSOHNSMoses, Felix & Fanny–Music, Sexism & Religion Wednesdays, April 17 & 24, May 1 & 8 at 11:15 AM in the Kolker RoomJoin Dr. Daniel Weiser as he explores the fascinating story of the Mendelssohn family, beginning with Moses Mendelssohn, a hunchback who came out of the Jewish ghetto to rise up into the intellectual elite of Enlightenment Germany to his sons Abraham and Felix, who helped establish a great banking empire and was one of the greatest child prodigies and composers of the Romantic period. Abraham's daughter, Fanny, showed similar musical talent as Felix and composed powerful and emotional Romantic music that has largely been forgotten. This class will highlight how sexism and the cult of motherhood played a key role in limiting Fanny's musical output. We will also focus on the role of religion and anti-Semitism in Felix's compositions. Numerous piano pieces by both Felix and Fanny during the class.

FEE: $45 for members; $55 for non-members. Registration is required.

or unable to join us in-person for services by implementing technology like live streaming.

• Eliminates stress for community members facing extraordinary financial hardship by offering reduced membership.

• Ensures every child receives a Jewish education by offering dozens of families in need of scholarships for Hebrew school and preschool.

• Nurtures our community’s well-being by providing confidential free counseling through our in-house social worker and pastoral support from clergy.

THE JEWISH WAR VETERANS, POST 888, NEED OUR HELP!Sunday, May 19 from 12:00-2:00 PM Meet at Beth El in the rear parking lotEach year new flags are placed on the graves of our Jewish War Veterans for Memorial Day.

The American JWV, founded in 1896 by 63 Civil War Jewish Vets, is the oldest of any American Veterans organization in the United States. We need to keep their legacy and memories alive and rewarded for their sacrifices for all of us. This Project is especially rewarding for families to come with their children. I am hoping each of you can help us again this year.

Barry Steelman, Beth El congregant and Jewish War Veteran (Viet Nam) has requested our help to assist placing flags again this year. This year’s project will be

co-chaired by Beth El member Michael Blumenfeld.

The cemeteries are located along Windsor Mill Road, Rogers Avenue, and Liberty Road. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to participate in a mitzvah project together; L’Dor V’Dor.

If you wish to volunteer or for more information, contact Barry Steelman at 410-486-0023 or cell 443-831-7384 or [email protected]. You can also contact Michael Blumenfeld at 410 740-2555 or [email protected].
