  • Goal setting is a powerful tool that can help you identify where you want to be in the future, establish steps to get there and measure your progress. However, the type of goals you set can determine whether or not you will actually attain them. For example, setting vague goals like, I want to do well in school doesnt set you up for successfully accomplishing this goal. What is your definition of well? How are you going to achieve this goal? How will you know when youve achieved it?

SMART goal setting will help you overcome these obstacles. SMART goals are: Specific: They answer who, what, why, when, where, and how. Measurable: They establish concrete criteria for measuring your progress. Attainable: They are broken down into smaller steps that you can accomplish. Realistic: They are goals that you are both willing and able to work towards. Timely: They are grounded within a time frame. They arent focused on someday

because someday isnt a real day. They are based on actual dates, which is why incorporating them in a planner is so appropriate.

Heres what happens when we take our vague goal, do well in school and make it SMART. I want to finish the academic year with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. This goal sets a time frame of the academic year, is realistic (the student isnt striving for perfection, but its still a challenging goal), and GPA is a great way to measure doing well. Next, you can break this goal down into more specific monthly and weekly goals that will push you towards this larger goal.

Heres an example of a monthly goal: This month, I will learn how to take effective notes in class that allow me to recall the information Im studying. Here, we define what effective notes are, we give ourselves a timeframe, and we set up a way to measure the goal. The notes are effective if I can recall the information. So we can measure this using flashcards or answering questions in class. The course grade is also a way to measure how well you are recalling the information. However, this doesnt tell us how we are to learn to take more effective notes, but we can answer that question with our weekly goals.

Heres an example of four SMART weekly goals that align with your monthly goal:1. This week I will schedule an appointment with a BEPKO success coach to discuss

ways of taking better notes. 2. This week I will read over the note-taking handouts my coach gave me. 3. This week I will purchase five notebooks and a pen I like so that I enjoy taking

notes by hand and dont rely on taking them on my laptop.4. This week I will talk with Jessica about her note-taking strategies, because she is

the smartest in the class and her notes look really good.

    GOAL SETTING

Meet with your professors. Professors love when their students take advantage of office hours. Its also a great way to make a huge class seem small. Try to meet with each of your professors during your first few weeks of class. Youll be glad you did!

Find a place on campus to study thats not your room. The library is full of quiet nooks and study rooms. Make sure you choose a place with lots of natural light, as this will help you stay alert. If you find yourself struggling to study effectively, visit the Bepko Learning Center at blc.uc.iupui.edu.

Wash your hands often. Its the easiest and most effective way to stay healthy. Also avoid sharing eating utensils. Mono and other nasty viruses spread through campuses like wildfire. Be smart and stick to the basic hygiene rules you learned when you were a kid.

Identify your personality type indicator. Knowing your type indicator is an excellent way to find activities and jobs best suited to your strengths. PREPs offers a free version of the Myers-Briggs type indicator test called Type Focus. You can find it at sciencepreps.iupui.edu/assessment-counseling.

Start networking! Networking can expose you to unpublished or under-advertised jobs and scholarships. If the thought of networking makes you uncomfortable, be sure to check out our collection of networking resources put together by a fellow introverted IUPUI Science student . Do research. Participating in undergraduate research is an excellent way to challenge yourself, build relationships with senior scientists, and add depth to your university experience. Every department in the School of Science offers undergraduate research opportunities. Stop by the PREPs office to learn whats available and how you can get involved.
