Overall, the Committee was happy with the designs of the furnishings in principle (with the exception of the chairs) and commended the PCC for using local designers and craftsmen. A few clarifications and, probably, modifications are still required however. 1. Altar: a) The design does not appear to be stable, and one of the legs appears to form a trip hazard by coming too close to the table edge. b) Please could the PCC clarify: i) The construction of the table – will the top be a single piece? ii) The fixing of the legs to the table iii) The timber and finish 2. Font: a) Details of the glass bowl are required for approval (prior to its being commissioned or made) 3. Chairs: a) Upholstered chairs are to be avoided because they deteriorate quickly; those proposed also do not stack, limiting the flexible use of the space b) Please could the PCC clarify whether they intend to coordinate the wood of the chairs with that of the rest of the church furniture (at present they appear to be settling on beech for the chairs but perhaps another wood elsewhere) c) Please could the PCC confirm whether the architect has been involved in the choice of chairs and, if not, invite his comments and advice

DAC is invited to: 1. Note: a) The letter, 16th January 2013, from English Heritage, recommending that the works be confined to the laser scanning, and enhanced to include historical research, photographic recording and fabric analysis. Further, that this should be undertaken as a precursor to the conservation works and any invasive research b) The email, 21 January 2013, from CBC, referring back to its previous advice 2. Consider the proposals, subject to a protocol for the protection of the stones being agreed in advance of the work being undertaken, particularly in respect of the fragile ledger slabs and the placing of tripods, wheeled survey equipment and foot traffic generally. This should also make reference to the separate equipment and activities required to carry out the associated TV filming. 3. Be aware that the GPR might produce results that are ambiguous or difficult to interpret (as was the case with the survey of the Fulke Greville monument at St Mary's, Warwick a little while ago) - should this be the case it may be that consent might subsequently be sought for some of the more contentious components of the earlier version of the scheme

DAC is invited to:
1. Note: a) The letter, 16 January 2013, from English Heritage, recommending that the work to record the current state of the ledger slabs be undertaken before any approval is issued under this faculty application, and that these ledger slabs as a group are internationally significant, and need to be treated with that level of respect and care b) The email, 21 January 2013, from CBC deferring to the DAC 2. Recommend the proposals, subject to resolving the following issues: a) Regarding the research, clarification of date and author of new paper, and also why, apart from a single reference to Dugdale recording Shakespeare’s ledger inscription c.1634, there is no schedule of other historic accounts of the slabs, of which there must be many. Also, clarification as to why no reference is made to the ledger slabs having been positioned so as to be read from the west, when normal practice was for them to be legible from the east. b) Regarding the testing, should the point made by Deborah Carthy be accepted, that meaningful tests of the durability of alternative grouts would require significant time, and this has to be set against the continuing degradation and consequent risk to the historic ledgers. Should tests be more concerned with the viability of introducing grouts effectively into the interstices of the laminations. c) The results of the geophysical survey and laser scanning currently being considered under C010/2012 should enable further refinement of the proposals (the latter possibly clarifying the extent of recutting of some inscriptions). However, the papers accompanying this application make no reference to the programme of investigative work by Birmingham University, for which a faculty is also being sought. Whilst the DAC had suggested (meeting 21/6/2012) that conservation work should be the subject of a separate faculty application from the investigative research, the absence of any reference to the work proposed by Birmingham University is surprising, since the conservation of the Shakespeare monuments is one of the justifications put forward for the investigation. The Birmingham programme might well shed light on the conservation process, for example in ascertaining whether the supposed Victorian re-ordering involved laying the ledger stones upon concrete, which might have a bearing on the process of delamination of the ledger stones (cf the letter 2/7/2012 from Catherine Cullis of SPAB, which suggests that it would be worth finding out whether there are records from any previous faculty applications in connexion with any C19th re-ordering), whilst the laser scanning might well be prove to be the most suitable means of recording some of the fainter inscriptions (as advocated, for example, for stone no.6), or even of determining where inscriptions have been recut. Whilst not objecting to either the investigation (as currently scoped) or the conservation works in principle, there would be merit in a more 'joined-up' approach to the understanding and conservation of these important monuments, with the investigative programme informing the conservation, as previously suggested by the DAC. However, depending on the time needed to assess the results of any tests of consolidation methods, it might be useful to initiate the tests so as to run alongside the archaeological research. d) The technical advice of CBC being taken into account
