Mathematical Reasoning
Use of mathematical thinking to solve
problems
Mathematical Reasoning:
Children adjust the height and angle of
the blocks to create a ramp that works.
Mathematical Reasoning:
“How can we divide the magic charms so
that all four of us have the same amount?”
Activity #2: Math Stations
As a table group, rotate among three stations. Stay in your color group.
At each station, complete the activity to investigate the California Preschool Foundations in Mathematics

Rich props that support in-depth play:
- Peer people props
- Vehicles in a numbered parking lot
- Natural materials
Literacy Props:
- Books
- Writing Kit
Stage 9: Buildings that reproduce or
symbolize actual structures
“This is the building where my mommy works.”
Activity #3: Stages of Block Play
With a partner, discuss each block structure on your handout.
Which stage of block play is it an example of? Write the number of the stage in each circle.

Activity #4: Instructions
1. One participant role plays being a child building with blocks. Follow directions on the child’s role play sheet.
2. Select a facilitator for your table.
3. Table participants observe child playing with blocks.
4. Discuss and decide on the child’s stage of block play.
5. Discuss and decide on the child’s language level and the CLASS language modeling strategy to use.
6. Take turns interacting with this child focusing on one of the Foundations listed.
7. Continue until table participants have used all five of the Foundations listed.
Thank you.
