Summer Group Work Feedback
We came to consensus regarding our controversial texts in Module 1. We did this by choosing an alternate text; based on looking through the lens of how it could impact our students, teachers, parents, and community. We made decisions based on grade level teacher feedback and took teachers' needs into consideration. We felt positive about having time to investigate each lesson in Module 1 and work on necessary changes. We are confident that our modifications will help our students feel confident in their ability to succeed.

The Need to Examine Instructional Practices in Our Special Education
Programs Ensure the use of best practices and research‐based
resources Proactive versus reactive approach to what to teach in
special education Low performance on state assessments Inconsistent practices Inconsistent use of the most up to date resources Unclear, sometimes contradictory messages to special
education teachersSpecial education = specially designed instruction
Special Education = Specially Designed Instruction
(NYSED Regulations Part 200.1 (vv))
Specially designed instruction means adapting, as appropriate to the needs of an eligible child…the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction to:
• Address the unique needs of the child that result from the child’s disability; and
• Ensure access of the child to the general curriculum, so that the child can meet the …standards…that apply to all children.
All of our special education teachers are knowledgeable and dedicated.
Special Education teachers are specialists in how students with disabilities learn. As specialists, they provide unique services and resources that allow students to access the same instruction that general education students enjoy.
The special education teacher has a "toolkit" of resources that assist her or him in adapting and modifying the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction to meet the unique needs of the student.
Decision‐Making Process
Met with each group of special education teachers to determine current practices and needs
Examined instructional programs and made recommendations
Visited BOCES classes to examine resources and speak with teachers

Resource Room ‐Math Spring 2014‐
Math Module overview training by Deidre and Sue provided step‐by‐step instructions to locate foundational standards within each module for each grade level. These were then used as supplemental/intervention lessons with students to build a stronger math foundation.
Spring/Summer 2014‐ Each module in grades 2‐5 was matched up with foundational standards and lessons to
match these standards. An overview document with this information was provided to each elementary resource room teacher. For example: Grade 2, Module 1, Topic A includes foundational standards that are addressed in Grade 1, Module 1, Topics A‐C, F, J.
In addition, elementary resource room teachers were provided supplemental materials to address both the grade‐level and foundational standards in each module. Each teacher was given the Newmark Learning Common Core Mathematics books for grades 1‐5. In addition, the Pearson Common Core Standards Practice Workbooks grades 3‐5 were utilized (these were provided by the district Math Committee 2 years ago).
