Joseph Stalin ruled the Soviet Union in the mid-20th century, creating a successful empire. However, his tactics as a leader were somewhat controversial. Stalin came to power succeeding Vladimir Lenin, who created the Soviet Union by overthrowing the Romanov Empire. Russians were angered with the Czars after the events of Bloody Sunday and a crumbling economy. Stalin’s brutal leadership was characterized by such changes as collective farming and five year plans. His methods for leadership include his totalitarian style and the elimination of religion.

RADAR (Radio Detection And Ranging) is a technology invented in the 1930s to detect distant objects, mostly aircraft and ships. Since detection is done by receiving radio waves reflected from the target, radar works the same by day and night and in all weather, which makes it a revolutionary long range observation tool, both military, and after world war 2, also civilian.

The introduction of jet fighters led to more intense aerial battles and for paratroopers to become commonplace. Wars began to change with the introduction of jets to become more focused on aerial bombing than infantry work. The US firebombed Japan for days on end, and each ground attack in WWI was preempted by an aerial attack. The Japanese began Kamikaze bombing, particularly enemy ships, where they would crash their plane into the target, thus killing themselves in glory.

Tinkered with in WWI, they became indispensible in the long distances involved in the Pacific war. They were also important in the Atlantic sea battles in that they 'closed the gap' in air cover mid-ocean. These huge ships were large enough to be floating runways to transport operational jets safe distances to bomb or complete other missions.

Flame Throwers were especially strategic for flushing out tight spaces and creating separation in hand to hand combat. These weapons created a wall of fire, launched from a large cylinder held by a soldier.

The USA with significant British help (and not a little from German and other European refugee scientists) developed this weapon in the Manhattan Project. The first nuclear weapon tested and used, the US used it to destroy the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

THE WAY OF THIS WAR

The Japanese military lived by the Bashido code or way of the warrior. They did not believe in mercy or surrender, so

when you surrendered you gave up your honor and deserved death

Because of this British, Americans and their allies learned that the war in the Pacific would be a war to the death
