A GOOD EXAMPLE
Joseph Stalin ruled the Soviet Union in the mid-20th century, creating a successful empire. However, his tactics as a leader were somewhat controversial. Stalin came to power succeeding Vladimir Lenin, who created the Soviet Union by overthrowing the Romanov Empire. Russians were angered with the Czars after the events of Bloody Sunday and a crumbling economy. Stalin’s brutal leadership was characterized by such changes as collective farming and five year plans. His methods for leadership include his totalitarian style and the elimination of religion.

WHAT’S WRONG?
Joseph Stalin ruled the Soviet Union in the mid-20th century. But he didn’t rule fairly. Stalin came to power after Lenin. Stalin’s brutal leadership was characterized by such changes as collective farming and five year plans. His methods for leadership include his secret police and the elimination of religion.

RADAR (Radio Detection And Ranging) is a technology invented in the 1930s to detect distant objects, mostly aircraft and ships. Since detection is done by receiving radio waves reflected from the target, radar works the same by day and night and in all weather, which makes it a revolutionary long range observation tool, both military, and after world war 2, also civilian.

The introduction of jet fighters led to more intense aerial battles and for paratroopers to become commonplace. Wars began to change with the introduction of jets to become more focused on aerial bombing than infantry work. The US firebombed Japan for days on end, and each ground attack in WWI was preempted by an aerial attack. The Japanese began Kamikaze bombing, particularly enemy ships, where they would crash their plane into the target, thus killing themselves in glory.

THE WAY OF THIS WAR
The Japanese military lived by the Bashido code or way of the warrior. They did not believe in mercy or surrender, so
when you surrendered you gave up your honor and deserved death
Because of this British, Americans and their allies learned that the war in the Pacific would be a war to the death
![Page 48: Agenda 1. Pray 2. Drill 3. Back to Basics DBQs 1. Documents 2. Idea Diagram 3. Graphic Organizer 4. STRUCTURE Drill If a DBQ asks “describe methods.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110100/56649de35503460f94ad9b79/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
A NEW WAR Initially these
Japanese victories seemed unstoppable
May 1942 proved the start of the end of Japan
The Battle of the Coral Sea although a draw – neither side winning, it would prove to the Americans that they could stop Japan
![Page 49: Agenda 1. Pray 2. Drill 3. Back to Basics DBQs 1. Documents 2. Idea Diagram 3. Graphic Organizer 4. STRUCTURE Drill If a DBQ asks “describe methods.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110100/56649de35503460f94ad9b79/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
A NEW WAR
Then in June 1942 America learned of an assault on the Midway Islands
Lead by their carriers and Brave Air Crews Admiral Nimitz sent these men out to destroy the Japanese
They sunk 4 Japanese carriers and lost one
It would be the last major offensive for the Japanese Navy
![Page 50: Agenda 1. Pray 2. Drill 3. Back to Basics DBQs 1. Documents 2. Idea Diagram 3. Graphic Organizer 4. STRUCTURE Drill If a DBQ asks “describe methods.](https://reader038.fdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022110100/56649de35503460f94ad9b79/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
ISLAND HOPPING
While the American Navy was fighting the Japanese Carrier forces General George McArthur planned his own revenge for the Philippines
He planned his island hopping campaignHe took only the
islands the USA needed for bases and Air Ports leaving other occupied Islands unsupplied in their rear

BLOODY ISLANDS United states Marines and Army Amphibious
Units would take the defended Islands we needed
These men would fight an enemy, that would not surrender, to the death at high cost to their own men• Eventually the USA retook enough islands to retake the Philippines
• In a last ditch attempt to save their Empire the Japanese Navy launch their Battleships into Attack
• The Battle of Leyte Gulf proved the end for the Japanese Navy and the End of the Japanese Empire

A CHOICE During the war the United States began
many programs to experiment with new weapons One became known as the Manhattan Project
It was to design a weapon that in one plane could equal the force of hundreds
