ASSOCIATION NEWS

It’s Not Too Late AGC’s 2009 Management Conference is sched-uled at the fabulous Ritz Carlton Hotel in St. Tho-mas (considered one of the top five resorts in the world!) from October 25-30. Two pieces of good news. First, there are a few spots remaining if you want to attend one of the great events of the year. And second, because the price of airfares has been dropping, it appears that those who act now will po-tentially save approxi-mately $500 over the published price (price for a couple now down to about $4,400). Lower air-fares are limited by the airlines and will sell out fast! DON’T DELAY…SECURE YOUR FLIGHTS AT THE REDUCED COSTS RIGHT AWAY! Price includes five nights at the Ritz Carlton, air-fare, private transfers in St. Thomas, luggage handling and all tips and taxes, buffet breakfast daily, welcome reception, farewell reception and dinner and more.

WILL HONOR THE AGCVA

DISCOUNT PROGRAM

While much is changing at General Motors these days with the government bailout/bankruptcy filing, the company has reconfirmed that the special vehicle discount for AGC mem-bers is still in effect. Just negotiate your best price with the dealer, identify yourself as an AGC member, and qualify for up to an additional $2,000 discount off the price of the vehi-cle (discounts vary by type of vehicle).

In light of General Motors’ announcements early this week, General Motors has reached out to AGC of America to di-rectly reinforce its commitment to the AGC/GM discount program. Their message states in relevant part:

“GM intends to honor 2009 fleet agreements for ordered and out of stock purchases, including applicable incen-tive payments.

Our intent is to continue with vehicle production as out-lined in previously communicated schedules.

GM intends to honor its warranty commitments given at the time of purchase to owners of current and future GM products.

Service for all brands will continue to be available through authorized GM service facilities, with genuine GM parts”.

Just go to the AGC of America website --- www.agc.org --- click on Membership, then click on Member Discounts, and follow the directions.

And remember, your employees can also avail of these discounts.

AGC of America Cited as Top Lobbying Operation

AGC of America was cited as one of the nation’s top lobbying operations by The Hill newspaper, one of the widely read periodicals targeting Congress and the advocacy community within Washington, DC. AGC was singled out as the only commercial construction association on this list because of our role in helping craft the federal stimulus legislation earlier this year.

While the article only lists the staff heads of each of the organizations, what the article is really acknowledging is the successful role played by the broader Economic Stimulus team assembled at AGC.

DISTRICT NEWS

It was a beautiful morning as NOVA District members gathered at Bull Run Shooting Facility in Centerville on Friday, May 29th. Although the gathering was small, the group of Sporting Clay enthusiasts concentrated on the prize ahead…the annual trophy and bragging rights!

A 100 shot round proved challenging, at the new venue, for even the most veteran shot. At the end of the day, the winner of the tourney with a 72 was Chris Rudy with Greenvest, LC. Chris will receive the annual trophy as well as one year’s worth of bragging rights!

Shooting a 69 was Stephen Dale with Smith Pachter McWhorter, PLC to bring up a close second place. And sharing in the third place with a 61 were co-workers Chuck Reynolds and Mike Sawyer with ECS Mid-Atlantic, Chantilly office.

A special thanks to all those who came out and supported the event!

On May 21st the Richmond District hosted a Green Roundtable discussion at the Wil-low Oaks Country Club. The breakfast meeting was packed as attendees participated in a dialogue on the practice of green building. Area experts sat on a panel to take audience questions and discussed their personal experience with how green building has helped their businesses and could help the construction industry as a whole. A huge thank you to those who sat on the panel (see list) and to Chris Hill with Durret-teBradshaw who was the moderator and coordinator of the event.

The next Richmond District breakfast will be held June 25th at Willow Oaks Country Club with guest speaker Kenneth Simonson, AGC’s Chief Economist. The topic: The new “stimulus” legislation promises to provide sorely needed dollars for construction in Virginia as well as nationally. How soon, how much, what types? What are the prospects for non-stimulus projects and the economy as a whole? How long will ma-terials prices be dormant? Ken Simonson, Chief Economist for AGC of America, will bring his crystal ball to Richmond to answer these questions—and yours. Register online today.

The first Valley District BBQ has come and gone and the level of participation, once again, proved it to be one of the most popular events of the year. Ingredients of success were Shenandoah Caverns as the location, food – Gary’s BBQ, wonderful members acting as food and bever-age sponsors – Dean Steel, Partners Excavat-ing, N.E.S. Rentals, and WACO, Inc. Thanks to all who made it a ‘must attend’ event for the dis-trict.
