Welcome to the Agape/Hope Publishing Company handbell music offerings for Spring, Lent and Easter 2012.

Inside, you’ll find suggestions for your 2012 season that were written by a group of extremely talented composers and arrangers who continually provide music that is brimming with creativity and fresh ideas.

Many of the enclosed selections are either hymn based or spiritual songs that are intended for use in Sunday morning worship, but may also be suitable for concert programming. One example of a crossover piece comes from Michael Glasgow with his energetic setting, “Keep Your Lamps,” combined here with “Elijah Rock.” You’ll also find plenty of hymn settings for Easter morning, as well as Palm Sunday.

We realize that community choirs are springing up all over the country and looking for repertoire that comes under the ‘popular’ or ‘secular’ category. Be sure to check out Sandra Eithun’s arrangement of the well-known Latin song, “Sway, “ and also the sensational hit by Lady Gaga, “Just Dance,” as arranged by Keith Richards – who arranged “Clocks” for us last year! A favorite song that was made famous by singer Josh Groban, and set here for bells and chimes by my co-editor here at Hope, Joel Raney, is the inspirational song, “You Raise Me Up” - a gorgeous ballad that is likely to find its way into worship services as well.

Please visit our website www.hopepublishing.com to view all of our Hope publications and to listen to full-length recordings.

MHP2591 3-5 Oct. Level 2 $4.95

This festive setting of the hymn tune HYFRYDOL spans the entire dynamic spectrum beginning and ending with strong, bold chords. The middle section provides a contrasting, contemplative treatment of the hymn, warmly enhanced by an effective key change. Ideally suited for Palm Sunday or Easter, this jubilant setting may also be utilized in general worship or concert venues.

Popular/Secular

MHP2592 3-5 Oct. w/opt. 3-5 oct. Handchimes & Cello Level 2+ $5.25MHP2592P Cello/Digital Strings Part 2.50

This inspirational song was based on a traditional Irish tune and first appeared as an instrumental piece on the Secret Garden album, “Once in a Red Moon.” The lyrics were later added and in 2003 David Foster arranged it for the singing sensation, Josh Groban. Joel Raney’s setting highlights the Celtic flavor with the addition of cello to accompany the bells and handchimes. The combination produces a stunning, lyrical ballad with lush harmonies. The positive message of Graham’s text has made this a crossover piece for both secular and sacred events.

This colorful setting of the traditional spiritual based on Matthew 25:1-13 features a bass line incorporating the spirited “Elijah Rock.” Variety in the middle section comes from the main melody appearing in the bells while the secondary melody is played on handchimes. Appealing in its variety, this clever setting is sure to delight ringers and listeners alike.

MHP2588 3-5 Oct. Additionally, this work can accompany the singing of the hymn by the congregation or choir. However, one chooses to utilize or embellish it, this is sure to be a thrilling addition to any Easter celebration.

Bill Ingram’s flowing setting of this great worship hymn has an optional part for 3 oct. handchimes. During the first stanza, the chimes, used internally, state the melody while handbells provide accompaniment above and below. During the second stanza, the handchimes accompany the bells which take the melody. With few bells changes, this arrangement is full of interest and comes together quickly with minimum rehearsal.

MHP2587 3-6 Oct. w/opt. 3 oct. Handchimes & Percussion Level 3 $5.25To honor their 25th year, San Francisco Area’s Bay Bells has commissioned this handbell setting of Pablo Beltran Ruiz’s well-known mambo tune, “Sway” (“Quien Sera”). The distinctive marimba sound is heard in the malleted bass bells while the trebles carry the infectious tune. The added percussion parts really give it that Latin flavor and offer opportunities for improvisation if desired. The tempo can be altered to give the piece an upbeat groove or slowed down for a more languid version.

Plink, Plank, Plunk

Track 31-32 Duration: 3:17

Popular/Secular

MHP2367 3-5 Oct. Level 3 $5.25

Here is a fun-to-ring 3-5 octave arrangement of Leroy Anderson’s novelty showcase, “Plink, Plank, Plunk”—performed entirely with mallets (bells on the table) and an occasional mart. By using mal-lets, the chromatics are not a problem even at the suggested tempo of (half-note = 144-152). The repetition of sections, and within sections, makes the piece easy to master.

MHPC5733 SATB $1.95MHPC5733HB 3-5 Oct. w/opt. 3-5 oct. Handchimes 4.50
