Review & Recommendations

Communication:

• Marketing needs to engage early with program requirements and timelines; reconciliation windows and deadlines need to be reasonable

Collaboration:

• The supply chain should leverage existing standards as they exist rather than implementing new portals, flat files, spreadsheets, etc.

• Retail needs a single code standard: GTIN and GLN are already in use in other segments – let’s use them consistently!

• Increased participation is needed – Ag Retail will step up. Will manufacturers and distribution?

Reporting – Easy as a card game

Ag Retail Proposals

• Implement a single set of reporting identifiers – GLN and GTIN are the preference

• Reduce – as much as possible – the reliance on proprietary identifiers

• Define and implement a common spreadsheet layout for sales and inventory reports

• Increase the percentage of retail that is able to generate, send and receive standardized reports

GLN’s are openly available (or soon to become so).

• The access barrier is gone. Now how do we implement?• Retailers – access via Allied Provider systems. Are providers on board with

integration?

• Manufacturers – legacy systems may not be optimized for GS1 standards. What will make this a priority?

• Distribution – caught in the middle with various requirements. Those with integrated retailers are interested; what about the others?

• Maintaining Value – ensuring data quality and availability.• User education – subscriber owned and maintained data

• Industry adoption – increased use means better quality

• Where are the successes? Crop Nutrition is exclusively GLN. Others?

Identifiers

Reporting Formats

•What’s out there today?

• XML – PMR, IAU v2.0.2, v3, v5, v5.2 …

• EDI – 867, 846 v2001, v4010 …

• Spreadsheets galore …

• Supplier-specific web portals

And every one uses some – but not all – of the same data elements, identifiers and attributes.

Standards, Messages and Versioning

• No standard for spreadsheets today

• PMR – Chemicals uses v4; Seed uses v5. Can we get to a common standard? Options? Discussion

• IAU – Chemicals uses v2.0.2; Seed uses v5. See above. Discussion

• EDI – fixed today at v4010 across the board for those who have implemented. Is this an issue of any urgency?

Increase Electronic participation..

REPORTING progression of delivery (retail level perspective)

• Paper only

• Manual “key” data entry into portal (each transaction)

• Manual Export file into portal/ upload (multiple transactions at time)

• System to System interactions (requires manual initiation)

• Fully Automated System to System interactions (near-real time)
