Green Card: Green card also refers to an immigration process of becoming a permanent resident.
The green card serves as proof that its holder, a lawful permanent resident (LPR), has been officially granted immigration benefits, which include permission to reside and take employment in the United States.
To Do After Getting a Green Card
You can do after getting a Green Card which are really great. Here are five of the best:
1. Get Social Security Benefits
2. Apply for Other Relatives to get a Green Card
3. Start a Business in the US
4. Attend Public Schools and Colleges in the US
5. Leave and Enter the US freely
You can get social security benefits The first thing you should do after getting a Green Card is get a social security number (if you haven’t already),
Now, because you live permanently in the US, you will be entitled to social security benefits after you have collected 40 quarters (10 years) of credits.
A social security number is also beneficial for tax and employment purposes.
You can apply for other relatives to get a Green Card
As a Permanent Resident, you can sponsor some of your other relatives for a green card, such as your spouse and unmarried children.
Additionally, the spouse and child of the green card holder can bring their children along with them.
Moreover, the spouse and children do not all have to come to the U.S. at the same time.
You can start a business in the US
As a Green Card holder, you can start your own business in the U.S.
You are able to form a corporation and hire employees.
If you did not have a green card, you would not be able operate a business unless you received special permission through certain non-immigrant visas, like an investor visa.
You can attend public schools and colleges in the US
Another benefit of having your green card is that you can qualify for in-state tuition at public colleges and universities.
When you live in the same state as a public college for a certain period of time, you can qualify for tuition at a lower price if you are a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (green card holder).
Additionally, unlike a foreign student, who is in the U.S. on a student visa, a green card holder can apply for Federal Financial aid to help pay for their college tuition.
You can leave and enter the US freely
Lawful Permanent Residents are given the privilege to travel outside the U.S. and return to the U.S. freely.
When you return to the U.S. from a trip abroad, the Border patrol process will be easier, because you have permission to live in the U.S.
You simply have to show the Border Patrol officer your valid green card to re-enter the U.S.
Please note that you may encounter problems when you re-enter the U.S. if you have been outside the U.S. for 6 months or more.
