May 2019 First Baptist Church, 200 East New York Avenue, Southern Pines, North Carolina 28387 From the Pastor’s Pen After Easter We have gone through the great celebration of our resurrection faith. You’ll recall that the disciples, particularly in the Gospel of John, went through a time of re-ordering their lives around the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. Peter and his fellow disciples had gone back to their old routines of fishing on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus meets them on the seaside. He restores Peter, and the disciples begin their empire-wide ministry of proclaiming the gospel. The message they pro- claimed was not ridiculed but was often met with persecution. Yet the disciples courageously kept living out their faith in Christ and proclaiming the good news even amid the threat and experience of persecution. Today the gospel no longer has cultural appeal, so we, like the early disciples, must think about how we will carry the message. We must trust God’s Spirit to guide us to share that message with people around us. We may do it differently, but most of all we must proclaim the eternal gospel. Years ago, a woman confronted the great evangelist, Dwight Moody. She told him, “Sir, I don’t like the way you do evangelism.” Moody replied, “I don’t like the way I do it either; tell me how you do it.” She responded, “I don’t do evangelism.” Moody said, “Then I like the way I do it better.” Too many of us are like this woman who was quick to criticize others without ever saying a word of witness for our Lord. That is not the way to change the world. Let us ask God to give us the courage and the words to share our hope of the gospel! PIC NIC! Beginning Advent in the Holy Land December 3-11, 2019 I am currently planning a trip to Israel in December of this year. I have had a good number of folks express interest in this trip. Our journey will begin in Tel Aviv, walking around the town of Jaffa on the Mediterranean Sea, and then we will begin the exciting venture to the historic sites throughout Israel where Old Testament characters like David and Elijah walked and led the people of our ancient faith. We will, of course, spend the majority of our time retracing the steps and places where Jesus and his disciples walked, taught, and did mighty deeds of faith. Once you go to Israel, you will never read the Bible the same way again. The sites and villages will be burned into your mind’s eye so that when you read of the village of Capernaum, for instance, you will remember the site of Peter’s home where Jesus certainly would have gathered with his disciples. This and so much more will inspire your faith. Our trip is being planned and guided by E.D.I. Travel. Boaz Shalgi, a certified Israeli tour guide, will lead our trip. Boaz led our group in 2010 and was excellent. I will have an Informational Meeting for all interested people on Sunday, May 19, at 4:00 p.m. in Room 216. Shalom!

Narrative Report on Financial Position / FBCSP

Prepared by John R. Beith, CCA, CCBA, Church Treasurer

March 2019 vs. March 2018

Our giving goal through the first three months of the year was $315,943 and we received $350,968. Through the end of March, pledged offerings received were 25.36% of the amount committed for 2019, 0.36% more than the 25% projected, while non-pledged offerings were 28.22% of the total, 3.22% more than our projection for the first quarter. By contrast, pledged offerings through March of last year were 22.89% of the amount committed, while non-pledged offerings were 28.11% of the total.

We have received 142 commitment cards totaling $853,852 this year, seven more cards than 2018 and exactly $60,000 more in commitments.

The church’s operating cash flow increased $56,327 in the first quarter of 2019, receipts exceeding expenses by the same amount for the year. By comparison, cash flow in the first quarter of 2018 increased $53,323 with receipts exceeding expenses by an equal amount.

The balance in the Capital Improvement Fund on March 31, 2019, was $22,084 after the Finance Committee approved the transfer of $20,000 from the previous year’s surplus. In addition, the Finance Committee recommended the use of budgeted debt retirement funds for prioritized capital expendi-tures. The congregation was informed of these decisions in business session on Wednesday, February 27.

The Annie Armstrong Easter and CBF Global Missions Easter Offerings goal for 2019 is $6,500. Through the end of March, 2019, we received $2,356 with several weeks to go before Easter.

The balance of our General Endowment Fund through March 31, 2019, was $361,071. Also, the Jeannie H. Jordan Memorial Endowment for the benefit of Sonshine Learning Center had a balance of $61,066 on the same date. Both endowments have made distributions. The general endowment supported the purchase of an HVAC unit and the debt retire-ment campaign, and the scholarship endowment has helped fund two and a half scholarships during the current school year.

Your Enduring Gifts Committee meets twice a year to monitor these two endowments, and they are managed by Rick Palmer of Stifel Nicolaus and Company. Please contact me if you would like more information on how you can leave a legacy gift to The First Baptist Church of Southern Pines.

“Golf and Faith” An Evening with Jon Decker

Jon Decker, PGA teaching professional with New Albany Country Club in Columbus, Ohio, will share about his love of golf and for Christ.

The game of golf has allowed Jon to play and teach while moving in career and social circles unimaginable to a boy who grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina. His book contains amazing stories and life-changing occurrences in a journey among some of golf's greatest players, world-class athletes, and Hall of Fame coaches: Arnold Palmer, Payne Stewart, Seve Ballesteros, Paul Azinger, Roy Williams, Bobby Cremins, and Jim Valvano. Jon's unique personal stories of these great players and coaches, along with words of Scripture, are all woven into a book that Jon hopes will not only grow the game of golf but, more importantly, glorify God and Jesus Christ.

Copies of Jon's book, Golf is My Life: Glorifying God Through the Game, will be available for purchase.

There is no admission charge. Bring a friend!

Kenyan Houses of Hope

As part of a church planting strategy by the Kenya Baptist Convention, houses are being built for families in need in Western Kenya. The recipients of the houses are determined by the village and village chief, working in conjunction with area pastors. Recipients are usually widows, women who have been abandoned by their husbands, or someone with a disability. Often these families are unable to keep their houses up to safe, sanitary standards. The cost of construction of a house—a simple African pole structure with a tin roof—is $400 (US), which includes materials and the help of a small team of Kenyan builders. At completion, the local Kenyan pastors begin Bible studies in the homes with the goal of starting a church.

“Houses of Hope” is our mission project in Children’s Ministry for the spring! Place your quarters in the collection bins around the church. Thank you!

God and Gardening

I think that if ever a mortal heard the voice of God, it would be in a garden at the cool of the day. — Frank F. Moore

I love flowers and gardens. I’m sure I picked up this hobby by helping my mother who was a very fine gardener. She could encourage just about anything to grow—I’m not sure how. Annuals, perennials, bulbs, seeds—plants that had been neglected and were barely alive, somehow she could nurse them back to health. Moreover, they would thrive. “Water, sunshine, love, and tenderness,” she would say. “Those are the ingredients to a thriving garden. Plants know if you care for them.” Mom was on to something there. One day, many years later, with my hands digging in the dirt, it struck me: God did some of His finest work in the soil of a garden. His garden, the very first garden. Our Creator was very prolific when it came to flowers. When God created the first rose, He could have stopped right there. A rose is a very splendid thing, a cause for celebration—the shape, the softness of the petals, and then, oh my, the fragrance. One would think that after God created the rose, He would have stepped back and said, “Here it is! A masterpiece. Behold, a rose.” And He could have stopped there. But He created more flowers. Thousands, of all shapes, sizes, and colors: pansies, violas, orchids, marigolds, tulips, hyacinths, coneflowers, balloon flowers, impatiens, crocuses, dahlias, bee balm, asters, daisies, sunflowers, the birds-of-paradise...each flower unique in its own way. Our Creator’s imagination is limitless; flowers are living works of art. I love to garden, because when I dig in the dirt, something happens that grounds and connects me to something deeper in a spiritual realm. This is a mystery. It is a pleasure to be connected to God’s creation—the earth and the life that springs from it. It’s a miracle, and every time I dig, I am reminded of how precious life is. A lovely garden brings hope. Listen to the words of the gospel: “Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?” — Luke 12:27-28

The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed

not just the body, but the soul. — Alfred Austin

NOTES OF GRAT TUDE Dear Friends, Thank you for coordinating the Tuesday, March 12, blood drive. We were very pleased with the drive overall, and the willingness of the donors to share this life-saving gift. The efforts of Southern Pines community churches have always been greatly appreciated. Your support of the commu-nity blood program will go a long way toward replenishing blood supplies and ultimately saving lives. During your blood drive on March 12, twenty-four donors registered, one donor was deferred, and 25 units were collected! We also regis-tered one first-time donor! Thank you for your contribution and ongoing support of this important community program. Sincerely, Kevin Maddox, American Red Cross
