AFTER

BEFORE BEYONDINSIDE EN ROUTE

Following your trip to the New Victory, you may find that your students want to discuss the performance and their own opinions. Reflecting on the show and voicing an aesthetic response is an important part of the theater-going experience. Allowing your students the opportunity to articulate their own thoughts and hear the ideas of their classmates will increase the impact of the theater experience.

As part of the reflection, have students fill out the CREATIVITY PAGE on the next page where they can write their review of the show!

Then, after their review is complete, have your students read a written newspaper review about the show. How was their review different? Did they agree or disagree with any main points? Let your students figure it out!

PERFORMANCE REFLECTION TEACHER TIP Engaging in dialogue, asking questions and recalling observations are skills that we believe should be fostered and encouraged. When leading a performance reflection discussion, try the following model of critical response: Describe (I saw…) Analyze (I wonder…) Interpret (I think/feel…) Evaluate (I believe…)

Be a theater critic and write your own review of CATCH ME! (Attrape-moi).Your review should include the following elements: An eye-catching headline, an opening that clearly states your opinion of the production and how you came to have that opinion, a brief summary of what you saw, and what made this production unique. Don’t forget to think about the set, costumes, lighting, music and performance choices.

HEADLINE:

WHAT I SAW:

HOW THE SHOW MADE ME FEEL (What mood were you in after the show? What about the show made you feel that way?):

MY OPINION (consider the music, set, costumes and lighting):

WHAT SURPRISED ME:

IN-CLASSROOM WORKSHOP EXTENSION: JUGGLING FUN!

AFTER

BEFORE BEYONDINSIDE EN ROUTE

Add to your students' workshop experience by expanding on their juggling acts!

Materials: Plastic Grocery Bags (cut in half along the seam or use the whole bag) or Tissue Paper

1. Inform your students that today they will be revisiting the juggling they learned in their New Vic workshop!

2. Divide your class into groups of 6 students.

3. Give each group at least 12 plastic bags or pieces of tissue paper (so each person has two). Have the group members take turns practicing their juggling and playing with the objects in the following way:

a. Flick wrist and throw the bag high. Watch it float down.b. Keep arms separated, elbows at waist and knees slightly bent. Place one bag in each hand and throw one

at a time.c. Throw one bag very high, spin around and catch the bag before it hits the ground.d. Throw one bag very high and catch it on your head.e. With a partner, throw and catch 2 bags at the same time!f. Recall and practice other juggling techniques learned during the New Vic workshop. See if anyone can juggle 3 (or more!) bags at the same time.

4. Have each team of 6 come up with an individual juggling routine. For this routine, they should determine the following:

a. An entrance that includes greeting their teammatesb. An short juggling act (no more than 1 minute) in which all 6 teammates can participate c. An exit that includes saying goodbye to their teammates

5. If you have time and if your students are up for the challenge, tell each group they need to come up with a moment where they have a select number of points of contact (see the “Off the Floor” exercise in the BEFORE section). For example, one group could have 5 points of contact. Another could have 12!

6. Have your students rehearse their juggling shows and perform!

REFLECTION QUESTIONSHow was the juggling we did today different from the juggling we did in the workshop? Why do you think the bags and tissue paper float in the air instead of immediately falling to the ground? Which of your classmate's performances did you enjoy and why? What makes a good circus performance? If you could learn to juggle anything, what would it be and why?

CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS: YEARBOOK

AFTER

BEFORE BEYONDINSIDE EN ROUTE

In CATCH ME! the memories of friendship and collaboration inspire the entire show! With the school year more than halfway over, help your students create lasting memories of their time in your classroom. Have students collaborate to create a yearbook to look back on fondly.

Step One

Have each student create a personal page that includes the following (encourage them to decorate it any way they choose!):

• Their name and a picture of themselves (a photograph or a self portrait will do) • The weirdest or most interesting thing they've learned this year• Their proudest moment of the year so far

Step Two

Break students into groups of 3 or 4 and assign each group to collaboratively create a page for the yearbook. The pages can be themed in any way that makes sense for your classroom. For example, each group could create a page for a subject or unit they studied and include things they learned. Or, each group could create a page for a fun field trip or outing that you took during the year. Encourage students to include visual aids (photos, drawings, art work, etc.) as well as quotes from students about what they learned.

Step Three Work with your students to create the sequence of the yearbook and a cover page. Then, make the book a reality! Make photo copies for all your students or make the yearbook a bulletin board on the wall of your classroom for the rest of the year!

Step Four Once your book has been assembled and your students have had a chance to look through it, ask them if there is one more thing they really want to do or really want to learn before the end of the year. Pick one of their suggestions and make this a priority! Once it has been achieved, add it to the yearbook!

BONUS: Send us photos (or a copy) of your yearbook! We’d love to see it. You can send your work to [email protected]

and in friendships. Use the questions below to explain why you think each of these qualities are necessary.
