    time-consuming, so stressul.

    There are so many problems,

    but the only way to really succeed is tokeep chugging along, he muses. I guess

    its part o the culture, part o the industry.

    But sheer dedication. Thats it, he nally

    says, with a nod o conviction, ater being

    asked what it takes to succeed in work at

    Magellan Solutions Outsourcing, Inc.

    And he should knowhe co-ounded

    Magellan Solutions less than six years ago.

    Opening with a small, 14-seat operation

    in August 2005, Chua has since built up

    the business into a successul 245-seat

    venture. This October Magellan will expandby another 300 seats.

    My career, really, is this company. Ive

    devoted the last 6 years to it, he shares

    glowingly, and you can tell his heart and

    soul is in his business. Were steadily

    growing. I think this is pretty much my

    greatest achievement is the legacy o mak-

    ing this companya 1,000-seat organiza-

    tion, hopeully, in the near uture.

    Chua is not looking at huge growth right

    away, though; in act, hes not looking to

    meet that 1,000-seat mark until at least

    three more years. But even so, Magellan

    Solutions is already ull-fedged corpora-

    tion, accomplishing both inbound andoutbound call center services or small-to-

    medium enterprises.

    A certied electronics and communica-

    tions engineer, Chua was rst a supervi-

    sor at eTelecare International, where he

    was responsible or managing serviced

    accounts or some o the companys

    prominent clients. That was back in 2001,

    and I stayed until around 2002, he recalls.

    His stint at eTelecare allowed him to get

    the gist o how the call center environment

    works. Basically he gleaned hands-on

    knowledge about the industrys cultureand process, which he later used to set up

    Magellan.

    Like every business undertaking, Magel-

    lan supplied Chua and his team with their

    share o setbacks, not the least o which

    involve manpower. I think the biggest chal-

    lenge is always people, especially in the

    call center industry, he says. In our case,

    weve learned rom our experiences.

    This is how Chua has learned the im-

    portance o people in business process

    outsourcing, and he has put his dedicated

    team at the core o Magellans growth.

    One o the things that people can expectrom our organization, he stresses, is that

    we will take care o our people. Our people

    will build our organization.

    Chua calls himsel a very relentless leader,

    constantly pushing his people to do more

    and be more; to be transparent and straight-

    orward. But, he warns, one has to strike a

    balance. You have to drive your people, but

    at the same time you have to motivate them

    so that they will ollow you, he explains.

    This relentlessness carries throughout

    Chuas leadership style, tying neatly intohis adamant belie that dedication gets

    one through anything. Try to gure out the

    solution to the problem, then move orward

    Just be there, always there, hands-on. You

    have to know exactly whats going on and

    take care o it yoursel.

    You have to have accountability and own-

    ership with whatever you do, he concludes

    Once you do that, you can succeed.

    I you look at America today, they have somany types healthy drinks. Being in thesot drink business or about thirteen years,Ive seen how big the consumption o sotdrink can be in this country. And it is veryprotable. Since we sold our sot drinkbusiness to Coke, and we had a ten-yearlockout wit them (which is ending nextyear), we couldnt get into sot drinks. Solets dierentiate ourselves and really lookat health.

    We noticed that Filipinos are becomingmore health conscious. Theres been a re-cent phenomenon o all these health prod-ucts: rom liver capsules to glutathione.Some people cant aord buy all thesevitamins. We also wanted a product thatmothers would be happy to give to theirchildren. So, coming rom our backgroundin developing sot drinks, we createdvitamin water.

    The advantage o Vitamin water is thateverybody gives vitamins to their children.This is basically vitamins in water basedorm. And when it comes to water, you candrink as many bottles as you can becausethere is no such thing as an overdose.

    ON STAYING ON TOP:We have a subsidiary that is a joint venturewith Unilever producing Selecta ice cream.Today, we are the number one ice creamcompany. And that is ater eighteen yearso competing in the market. When webought the Selecta brand rom the Arceamily, that ice cream brand was abso-lutely nothing. Meanwhile, Magnolia wasthe largest ice cream company. Thats thesame story with Cosmos sotdrink brand.

    To be on top, you need to constantly look

    at your business model. The moment youstop thinking about your business model,then its game over or you. You are goingto be eaten up. The next guy, the kindo guy you were when you started outin business, will become your greatestthreat. These are your biggest competitors:People who are coming out o college, ullo passion and wanting to succeed.

    Another one o more business threats arethe regional entrepreneurs. Companieslike CDO based out o Pampanga actuallykilled us in the processed meats business.They were mom and pop operators that wetook or granted, and now they are double
