TRANSCRIPTION to AFRICA by TOTO - bass by DAVID HUNGATE

This transcription is Africa by Toto. The bass line to this was originally played by David Hungate.

This is an easier bass line than a lot that I feature in the main transcription part of First Bass And Beyond.

But David Hungate is a great player, and this is a good introduction to 16th note rhythms.

If you get hold of the track, have a close listen to the mix and then lis-ten to something that was mixed and released recently (e.g. Springs-teen’s latest). The difference is astonishing - every instrument in Africa is clearly audible, and the bass part is well defined. So even if you don’t know how to interpret 16th note rhythms from the notation and tab, you’ll clearly be able to hear how they should be played.

Add the modest tempo of the track and it makes a good track for those beginners looking to stretch their abilities and rhythmic understandings to get their fingers around.

Here’s how Africa lays out....

Letter A - Bass In - 0.10Letter B - Verse 1 - 0.31Letter C - Chorus - 1.16Letter D - Riff - 1.39Letter E - Verse 2 - 1.49Letter F - Chorus - 2.23Letter G - Interlude - 2.48

Letter H - Flute - 2.56Letter I - Chorus - 3.28

As always, the tab reflects my fingering system, hand size and scale length. If any of these differ for you - the probability of which is high - then feel free to change the tab positions around to suit YOUR playing system, hand size and bass length.
