‘Drive 2 the Game’ RoundOver this weekend and next in the TAC Cup and TAC Cup Girls competitions, AFL Victoria with the support of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) is encouraging learner and P-plate drivers to drive to their games. The ‘Drive 2 the Game’ Round initiative was introduced in 2017 to help make driving
to the game a pre-match ritual for our under-18 players and their parents.
These rounds – TAC Cup Rounds 4 and 5 and TAC Cup Girls Rounds 6 and 7 – also
seek to encourage players and parents to talk about the importance of driver
safety and regular practice, which is vital for creating a safe environment for all
Victorians on our roads.
To coincide with the ‘Drive 2 the Game’ rounds, the TAC has launched an eLearning
Module to help educate parents regarding their learner and P-plate drivers via a
quick online questionnaire.
Parents play an important role in driver education and we want to ensure they are well
equipped to understand the challenges their kids are facing as they tackle the roads for
the first time or start to face road use unsupervised on P-plates.
All TAC Cup/TAC Cup Girls parents who complete the module will have the chance to win
two tickets to the 2018 Toyota AFL Grand Final, so we encourage them to take part in this
great new initiative from the TAC.
This weekend’s 12 TAC Cup and TAC Cup Girls matches take place in Ballarat, Bendigo,
Dandenong, Geelong, Morwell, Wangaratta and Werribee, presenting a perfect
opportunity for players to get behind the wheel.
And of course, for anyone driving around Melbourne to get to Peter Jackson VFL games
this weekend, AFL Victoria and the TAC reminds you to always stay safe on our roads.

COLLINGWOOD vs ESSENDON –
Saturday 2.10pm @ Victoria Park[LIVE on Channel 7]
LAST ENCOUNTER
2017 Rd 15 @ Victoria Park:
Essendon 15.10 (100) d Collingwood 13.8 (86)
FORM COMING IN
Collingwood has experienced two contrasting
games – a 130-point defeat of the Northern Blues
followed by a tough 16-point loss to Port Melbourne.
Essendon recorded a 102-point win against
Frankston before falling to Williamstown by 32
points.
KEY QUESTIONS
Can the Magpies stop Essendon’s run from
defence? At AFL and VFL level, the Bombers
love generating scoring opportunities with quick
counter-attacks from defence. Collingwood pressure
forwards like Jarryd Blair, Andrew Gallucci and Chris
Mayne will need to clamp down on opposition play-
makers such as Nick Hind and Ben McNiece.
Can the Bombers match Collingwood in tight?
The Magpies boast several big-bodied midfielders
who can win the ball in contests and tackle hard
when not in possession. Essendon will have to
be mindful of sticking close to Rupert Wills, Gus
Borthwick and Brayden Sier to limit their influence
at stoppages.
HOME CLUB’S PERSPECTIVE
Collingwood VFL senior coach Jared Rivers on his
team’s contrasting results in the first two rounds:
“We didn’t handle the conditions well on Saturday
(against Port Melbourne); it was windy and rainy
which made it hard to score. We were pretty
disappointed in what we dished up aft er probably
the best VFL performance I’ve seen in my time at the
club (against the Northern Blues in Round 1), which
was off the back of players being selfless for four
quarters. Guys like (experienced AFL-listed Magpies)
Jamie Elliott and Jordan De Goey could have easily
come in and played for themselves, but they didn’t
and that went right through to the VFL-listed boys.”
On which VFL-listed Magpies have impressed so far this season:
“Our leadership group has been great. Our captain Jack Hellier and vice-captains Matt Smith and Gus Borthwick have really shown us their leadership skills. Michael Chippendale played in defence for us last year and had a few injuries with his knee, but he’s played a forward role this year and his ability to compete in the air and put pressure on at ground level has been super.”
On some of the keys to victory against Essendon:
“Essendon is a pretty well-rounded team. Heath Hocking in the middle always makes it a tough battle, and the likes of Rupert Wills, Jack Hellier and Gus Borthwick will take him on. The VFL Bombers are very similar to the way the club plays at AFL level – they oft en score from the back half, so our ability to shut their high defenders down and lock the ball in our forward half is going to be our biggest challenge. They like to play quick and we probably like to play more of a stoppage game, so getting the game on our terms from the start is going to be key.”
Peter Jackson VFL preview – Round 3Collingwood and Essendon face off this weekend in their traditional VFL clash in the lead-up to ANZAC Day – it’s our game of the week for Peter Jackson VFL Round 3.
Michael Chippendale has moved from defence into attack for Collingwood this year

COBURG vs BOX HILL HAWKS – Saturday 2pm @ Piranha Park
[LIVE on 3WBC radio]
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 2 @ Box Hill City Oval: Box Hill Hawks 20.8 (128) d Coburg 9.8 (62)
FORM COMING INA young Coburg group has faded out of two games now, losing to the Casey Demons by 107 points and then Footscray by 81 points. Box Hill is one of five undefeated teams aft er accounting for Williamstown and then Frankston in the first two rounds.
KEY QUESTIONSCan the Lions clamp down on the Hawks in space? Coburg conceded 73 marks to Footscray in the wet last week while recording only 22 of its own. Box Hill loves to play keepings-off with the ball given good conditions, so the Lions will need to stick close to their opponents outside the contest.
Can Box Hill prevent Coburg from winning the hard-ball? The Hawks lost the clearance count in their win against Frankston last week and will have to be wary of the ball-winning ability of Ben Allan (12 clearances in Coburg’s Round 2 loss), Liam Hunt (five) and young gun Marcus Lentini (four).
NORTH MELBOURNE vs FRANKSTON – Saturday 2pm @ Avalon Airport Oval
LAST ENCOUNTER
Never played.
FORM COMING IN
North Melbourne enjoyed a thrilling introduction to
the VFL, pipping the Northern Blues by three points
in a comeback triumph. Frankston has been highly
competitive in the first halves of losses to Essendon
and then the Box Hill Hawks.
KEY QUESTIONS
How far can North Melbourne’s VFL-listers take
the team in 2018? Experienced Kangaroos Nick
Rippon (23 disposals, eight tackles), Chris Jansen (20,
one goal) and Michael Close (two goals) all starred in
Round 2 and look to balance out North Melbourne’s
young AFL group well.
Can Frankston maintain its form in the contest?
The Dolphins got the better of Box Hill in close
last week, winning the contested possession and
clearance counts on the back of the likes of Will
Fordham and Lachlan Williams. The Kangaroos
midfield did a number on the Blues in Round 2 and
will need to be negated.
GEELONG vs FOOTSCRAY – Saturday 2pm @ GMHBA Stadium
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 13 @ GMHBA Stadium: Footscray 16.10 (106) d Geelong 6.8 (44)
FORM COMING INGeelong was this time on the wrong end of a thrilling finish in a two-point loss to Sandringham in Round 2, a week aft er defeating Werribee by four points. Footscray responded to a first-round loss to Sandringham by handsomely defeating Coburg.
KEY QUESTIONSWhich Geelong defender matches up on Tom Boyd? The Cats are plumbing the depths of their key defensive reserves with Harry Taylor and Lachie Henderson on the sidelines for their AFL team and Tom Boyd was dominant with five second-half goals against the Lions last week. The task could fall to Timm House or Ryan Gardner.
Can Footscray win the ruck battle? Tom Campbell (47 hitouts) and Jordan Roughead (38) consistently got first hands to the ball in ruck contests against Coburg with Tom Goodwin going down injured. The battle with Geelong big men Zac Smith and Ryan Abbott could be crucial in deciding which midfield wins first use of the ball.

WERRIBEE vs WILLIAMSTOWN – Sunday 2pm @ Avalon Airport Oval
[VFL website LIVE STREAM/VFL Live]
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 17 @ Williamstown Football Ground:
Williamstown 17.15 (117) d Werribee 6.10 (46)
FORM COMING INWerribee has given up second-half leads in losses to
Geelong by four points in Round 1 and then the Casey
Demons by 16 points. Williamstown rebounded
from a 37-point loss to the Box Hill Hawks with a
32-point defeat of Essendon last week.
KEY QUESTIONSWill Werribee learn to hold its nerve when games
get close? The Tigers were 18 points in front of Casey
midway through the third term before conceding
six of the game’s last seven goals. Tom Gribble, Matt
Hanson and Ben Moloney were all good performers
that night, but other leaders must start stepping up
when the pressure is on.
Can Seagulls ruckman Nick Meese be contained?
Werribee big man Nick Nott has a task in front of
him to limit the influence of Meese, who recorded
12 disposals, 53 hitouts, 12 tackles, 10 clearances
and two goals matched mostly against Matthew
Leuenberger last week. Meese is crucial to
Williamstown getting the upper hand in contests.
RICHMOND vs CASEY DEMONS – Sunday 2pm @ Swinburne Centre[Richmond FC LIVE STREAM]
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 semi final @ North Port Oval: Richmond 19.14 (128) d Casey Demons 15.11 (101)
FORM COMING INRichmond enjoyed some revenge over Port Melbourne for its 2017 Grand Final defeat in Round 1, knocking off the Borough by 55 points before a bye. Casey is on top of the ladder following a big win against Coburg and then a 16-point victory over Werribee.
KEY QUESTIONSCan the Tigers stifle Casey’s avenues to goal? Casey boasts nine players to have kicked at least two goals already this season and Richmond defenders like Nathan Broad and Ryan Garthwaite will need to be wary of Demons goalkickers such as Harley Balic (seven majors in 2018) and Sam Weideman (six).
Can the Demons withstand Richmond’s tackling pressure? The Tigers pressured Port Melbourne into submission in Round 1, with Corey Ellis (nine tackles), Jake Aarts and Nathan Drummond (seven each) helping force turnovers seemingly at will. Casey prime movers like Corey Maynard and Billy Stretch must stay clean in possession.
* ROUND 3 BYE – Northern Blues
SANDRINGHAM vs PORT MELBOURNE – Sunday 2pm @ Trevor Barker Beach Oval
[LIVE on Casey Radio]
LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 13 @ North Port Oval: Sandringham 11.9 (75) d Port Melbourne 9.13 (67)
FORM COMING INSandringham went two from two with a thrilling two-point win against Geelong last week, backing up a victory over Footscray. Port Melbourne turned things around from a Round 1 loss to Richmond with a slogging 16-point defeat of Collingwood last week.
KEY QUESTIONSWill Sandringham benefit from St Kilda’s woes at AFL level? The Zebras have received good production from usual AFL regulars such as Sam Gilbert, Jack Steele and David Armitage in their two wins and the flow of experienced Saints to Sandringham may continue if struggling St Kilda decides to continue blooding youth.
Can anyone stop Borough captain Jordan Lisle inside 50? The two-time ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal winner was imperious in front of goal against the Magpies last week, booting five of Port Melbourne’s nine majors to help lead his team to victory. It might require a team eff ort across the ground from the Zebras to minimise his influence.

Mirra makes the AFLAfter 126 Peter Jackson VFL games in eight seasons with the Box Hill Hawks, David Mirra made his AFL debut for Hawthorn in Round 4 last week. The 27-year-old had captained Box Hill for four years when he was selected by the AFL Hawks with pick no.23 in last year’s Rookie Draft . He played in Box Hill’s Round 1 victory over Williamstown before receiving the call-up to AFL level for Hawthorn’s clash with Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday.
Mirra recorded 18 disposals, 12 one-percenters and six rebound-50s in the Hawks’ 67-point defeat of the Demons.
The Eastern Ranges (TAC Cup), Scoresby and St Simons (both Eastern FL) junior was a four-time VFL Team of the Year selection, three-time state representative and winner of Box Hill’s best-and-fairest award in 2016.

Ayres reaches 700 gamesPort Melbourne senior coach Gary Ayres brought up his 700th match as a player and coach at AFL/VFL and VFL/VFA level last week.Ayres’ 208th game as the Borough’s mentor was memorable for another reason too, his team rebounding from a big first-round loss to Richmond to defeat Collingwood by 16 points at Olympic Park Oval.
The legendary coach has guided Port Melbourne to Peter Jackson VFL premierships in 2011 and 2017 and was named VFL Coach of the Year in 2011-13. His VFL coaching record over 11 seasons is 141 wins, 65 losses and two draws.
Prior to joining the Borough in 2008, Ayres made 269 appearances as a player for Hawthorn – winning five AFL/VFL premierships and two Norm Smith Medals – as well as coaching in the AFL for Geelong in 116 games and Adelaide in 107 matches.
ANZAC Day gamesCoburg’s traditional clash with the Box Hill Hawks in the lead-up to ANZAC Day on Wednesday is one way in which Peter Jackson VFL clubs will be honouring the memory of those who served our country this weekend. The best player on the ground in the Lions vs Hawks match will receive the Gibbs-Lines Medal, named aft er two ex-servicemen from World War II who were stalwarts of the competing clubs – John Gibbs (Box Hill) and Eric Lines (Coburg).
Other VFL clubs will commemorate the occasion by engaging local branches of the RSL (Returned and Services League) for their ANZAC Day weekend games.
