LOVE THE GAMENOT THE ODDS

Kids today think betting and sport go together.

This weekend, as part of Love the Game Round, we’re helping our fans have ‘the talk’ with the young people in their lives about sports betting and the risks involved.

For tips on how to have ‘the talk’ go to lovethegame.vic.gov.au

Love the Game RoundThis weekend the Victorian football community is encouraging fans to love the game, not the odds as part of the 2018 Love the Game Round.AFL Victoria, in partnership with the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, is showing

its support for the ‘Love the Game’ campaign via this annual dedicated round along with all

10 Victorian-based AFL clubs, 23 community leagues and community clubs around the state.

United by a passion for the game, the aim of the round is to remind fans and players

alike that sport and betting don’t have to go together, despite the significant amount of

advertising that is now taken to be a normal part of the sporting landscape.

During Love the Game Round, parents and other influential adults are being encouraged

to talk to the kids in their life about the risks and potential harms associated with sports

betting so they can develop a more balanced and realistic understanding of how gambling

works.

Participating community and state leagues will also be assisted in educating clubs on creating

safe and healthy environments for members to understand the risks involved with the

increased normalisation of gambling in the community.

Among the initiatives this weekend, Saturday’s Peter Jackson VFL match between Williamstown

and Footscray at Williamstown Football Ground will be a family day including a host of children’s

activities such as inflatables, face painting and half-time grid games.

Love the Game Round is an important reminder to football supporters about what really matters.

AFL Victoria understands the importance of protecting our kids and we will encourage clubs to

focus on the love of the game, not the odds – not just this weekend but every round of the season.

Peter Jackson VFL preview – Round 16Peter Jackson VFL ‘Love the Game’ Round 16 features three games that could help determine which teams earn a September berth and a finals double-chance – Essendon vs Collingwood, Williamstown vs Footscray and Geelong vs Casey Demons.

WILLIAMSTOWN vs FOOTSCRAY – Saturday 2.10pm @ Williamstown Football Ground[LIVE on Channel 7]

LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 19 @ VU Whitten Oval: Williamstown 14.17 (101) d Footscray 8.10 (58)

FORM COMING INWilliamstown (5th, 8-5) bounced back from a loss to Port Melbourne with a 39-point win against the Northern Blues in Round 15. Footscray (9th, 7-6) has suff ered back-to-back defeats to top-eight teams Box Hill Hawks and then Casey Demons by 16 points last week.

KEY QUESTIONWhat advantage will Nick Meese’s absence present the Bulldogs? Seagulls ruck Meese was suspended for three weeks last round and Footscray’s top-ranked division for hitouts per game – featuring Tim English and possibly Tom Campbell – will look to add to their midfield teammates’ standing as the VFL’s no.1 for average clearances.

KEY STATFor a team clearly in the finals mix, Williamstown’s scoring power has been lacking this season. The Seagulls rank 12th in the competition for goals per game but might have found an answer inside 50 recently, with sometimes-defender Nick Rodda booting nine majors in his last five matches – including a haul of five against the Blues last week.

V

ESSENDON vs COLLINGWOOD – Saturday 11am @ Windy Hill

LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 3 @ Victoria Park: Collingwood 16.10 (106) d Essendon 12.6 (78)

FORM COMING INEssendon (6th, 7-6) has suff ered consecutive losses to the Casey Demons, Richmond and then to Werribee in a one-point thriller last round. Collingwood (7th, 7-5) arrested a four-loss mid-season slump with a 58-point defeat of Werribee two weeks ago before a bye.

KEY QUESTION Will the Bombers come to play from the start? Essendon has suff ered from slow starts to games in recent times, having trailed at quarter time against the Box Hill Hawks (by 15 points), Casey (18), Richmond (25) and Werribee (five) over the last four weeks – and kicking a total of just four first-term goals in that period.

KEY STATThe Magpies lost the clearance count to the Bombers by 20 in Round 3 but still generated 13 more inside-50s en route to a winning score, while last week Essendon similarly beat Werribee by 18 in clearances but conceded six more inside-50s. Dan Jordan’s team will likely look to polish up its ball movement going forward this week.

PORT MELBOURNE vs COBURG – Saturday 2pm @ North Port Oval

LAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 17 @ North Port Oval: Port Melbourne 30.17 (197)

d Coburg 5.7 (37)

FORM COMING INPort Melbourne (8th, 7-6) hasn’t won or lost more than two

consecutive games from Round 7, most recently falling to the

Box Hill Hawks by 43 points. Coburg (15th, 1-12-1) claimed

its first victory of the season by 45 points over Frankston last

week.

KEY QUESTIONIs an upset possible? The Lions would be buoyed by several

factors heading into this game. They’re coming off a draw and

their first victory since Round 18 last year and torched the

Dolphins in contests last week, while the Borough has been

in inconsistent form and lost three of five games at home this

season.

KEY STATGary Ayres would likely be disappointed in Port Melbourne’s

inability to lay a hand on Box Hill last week, the Borough

recording a clear round-low of just 42 tackles – 37 fewer than

their 2018 average. Coburg, meanwhile, surpassed its season

average by eight tackles against Frankston, laying 87 despite

also winning 52 more disposals.

* ROUND 16 BYE – Box Hill Hawks

FRANKSTON vs NORTH MELBOURNE – Sunday 12pm @ SkyBus Stadium

LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 3 @ Avalon Airport Oval: Frankston 20.9 (129)

d North Melbourne 17.14 (116)

FORM COMING INFrankston (14th, 2-11) is on a seven-game losing streak

aft er going down to Coburg – the last side the Dolphins

defeated – by 45 points last week. North Melbourne

(10th, 6-7) suff ered a fourth loss in five games with an

85-point defeat at the hands of Richmond in Round 15.

KEY QUESTIONHow long is Frankston’s memory? The Dolphins

must forget their last seven games – which they’ve lost

by an average margin of 77 points – and think back to

Round 3 when a win over the Kangaroos was their first

since 2016. Corey Rich was the star that day with five

goals, while Lewis Pierce had 34 hitouts and two majors

opposed to Braydon Preuss.

KEY STATBoth teams seem low on confidence and its perhaps

demonstrated in the fact they rank last (Frankston) and

third-last (North Melbourne) in the VFL for eff ective

kicks per game. As a result, they both also rank in the

bottom three teams for generating inside-50s, though

the Kangaroos rank fift h for goals scored per entry (the

Dolphins rank 13th).

WERRIBEE vs NORTHERN BLUES – Sunday 1pm @ Avalon Airport OvalLAST ENCOUNTER2017 Rd 18 @ Preston City Oval: Northern Blues 16.9 (105) d Werribee 10.16 (76)

FORM COMING INWerribee (12th, 4-9) lost back-to-back matches to Geelong and Collingwood before prevailing over another

top-eight opponent in Essendon by a point in Round 15. The Blues (13th, 2-10) have lost consecutive games aft er

falling to Williamstown by 39 points last week.

KEY QUESTIONWhat’s on the horizon for these teams? Eyes may be turning to 2019, but the future looks good. The Tigers

have knocked off the Box Hill Hawks and Essendon this season and the Blues defeated Collingwood. Development

in the likes of Jack Henderson and Harry Boyd (Werribee) as well as Mason Blakey and Kane Keppel (Northern)

should excite fans.

KEY STATConversion in front of goal could be key to this result given both teams rank in the VFL’s bottom three for disposals

and contested possessions per game. The Tigers may hold the advantage when the ball does go forward, with

match-winners like Josh Porter and Andrew Hooper helping their team rank fourth for scores per inside-50 (the

Blues rank last).

V

V

GEELONG vs CASEY DEMONS – Saturday 3.45pm @ GMHBA Stadium

[LIVE on Casey Radio]

LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 4 @ Casey Fields: Geelong 12.12 (84) d

Casey Demons 9.8 (62)

FORM COMING INGeelong (3rd, 10-3) won a seventh straight game with

a 28-point defeat of Sandringham in Round 15. The

Demons (2nd, 11-2) are travelling even better though,

racking up nine wins in a row – the most recent a

16-point victory over Footscray last week.

KEY QUESTIONDid the Cats spark Casey to life in 2018? Geelong’s

Round 4 defeat of the Demons kicked off Casey’s

current winning streak and was the only loss it has

suff ered at its home ground this season. The Cats did

it that day on the back of contested-ball dominance,

with Tom Atkins, Charlie Constable and James Tsitas

running amok in the middle.

KEY STATGeelong won the contested-possession count 172-150

in Round 4, but its control of the ball in space has

arguably been a bigger strength in 2018. The Cats rank

first in the VFL for disposals per game and average

40 more uncontested possessions and 16 more

uncontested marks than the Demons, who will need

to keep their pressure high this week.

SANDRINGHAM vs RICHMOND – Sunday 2pm @ Trevor Barker Beach Oval[vfl.com.au LIVE VIDEO STREAM / VFL Live / Casey Radio]

LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 7 @ Holm Park, Beaconsfield: Richmond 14.14 (98) d Sandringham 4.9 (33)

FORM COMING INRichmond (1st, 11-2) notched a fourth straight victory aft er accounting for North Melbourne by 85 points in Round 15. Sandringham (11th, 5-7-1) hasn’t won or lost back-to-back games since Round 7, most recently going down to Geelong by 28 points.

KEY QUESTIONWill the Tigers be battle-hardened enough for finals? Without dismissing the quality of opponents like the Zebras on any given day, this is the first of three remaining home-and-away games that Richmond will play against teams currently outside the top eight – the most of any current top-eight team.

KEY STATIf Sandringham is any chance of causing an upset, it needs to perform better in the contests than in Round 7. The Zebras are clearly the VFL’s top-ranked team for contested possessions per game (the Tigers rank fift h) but lost the count 142-134 that day as Tyson Stengle, Anthony Miles and Brandon Wood starred in close for Richmond.

WILLIAMSTOWN vs WESTERN BULLDOGS – Saturday 11.30am

@ Williamstown Football Ground

LAST ENCOUNTER2018 Rd 6 @ Henry Turner Reserve: Western Bulldogs 12.11 (83) d Williamstown 4.3 (27)

FORM COMING INWilliamstown (12th, 1-8) lost its fift h game in a row last round, going down to Carlton by 29 points. The Bulldogs (6th, 5-4) continued their rise up the ladder with their fift h win in as many rounds last week, beating Essendon by six points.

KEY QUESTIONCan Williamstown win more of the ball? Last time these teams met, the Bulldogs recorded 50 more disposals than the Seagulls and generated 25 more inside-50s. In last week’s loss to Carlton, gun Seagulls midfielders Jess Duff in (33 disposals) and Jenna Bruton (29) had no trouble getting their hands on the ball but 17 Williamstown players recorded less than 10 disposals.

KEY STATThe Bulldogs had plenty of ball-winners in their win against the Bombers, boasting seven of the game’s top-10 disposal-getters. Ellie Blackburn had a match-high 26 disposals – 11 more than any Essendon player – with fellow midfielders Sarah Jolly and Naomi Ferres also finding plenty of the ball.

V V

RICHMOND vs NT THUNDER – Saturday 12pm @ Swinburne Centre

FORM COMING IN Richmond (9th, 3-6) suff ered a third loss in a row when the Casey Demons beat the Tigers by 18 points in

Bendigo last week. The Thunder (3rd, 7-2) have found their form again with a second win in a row by 40 points

against the Darebin Falcons in Round 10.

KEY QUESTIONCan Richmond stand up in pressure situations? The Tigers’ last three losses have been close contests,

losing their Round 8 clash against Hawthorn by four points before Essendon defeated them by six points. Last

week they took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter against the Demons before a final-term fade-out.

Improved accuracy in front of goal will help Richmond compete with a high-scoring NT outfit, having kicked 3.8

and 2.9 over the last two weeks.

KEY STATAdelaide AFLW premiership player Abbey Holmes played her first game for the Thunder last week and

dominated up forward with four goals from seven disposals. Aft er being delisted from the Crows in the off -

season, this could be a good start to a potential re-listing in the upcoming draft period.

V

DAREBIN FALCONS vs ESSENDON – Saturday 12pm @ Bill Lawry Oval

FORM COMING INDarebin (5th, 5-4) failed to upend the NT Thunder for the second time this season, losing by 40 points last round. Essendon (13th, 1-8) came close to a second win last week but agonisingly fell six points short of the Western Bulldogs.

KEY QUESTIONCan Essendon take a second scalp this season? Aft er winning their first game against Richmond in Round 9, the Bombers backed it up with an extremely competitive showing against the in-form Bulldogs. They trailed their opponents heavily in hitouts, disposals and inside-50s but proved extremely eff icient with their ball use, with only one goal proving the diff erence.

KEY STATDarebin failed to bring the necessary pressure needed to curb a dangerous NT line-up last week. The Falcons had 28 fewer disposals than the Thunder but also laid 30 fewer tackles. Attacking pressure was also lacking, with Darebin getting a return of three scoring shots from 24 inside-50s.

* ROUND 11 BYE – Hawthorn

V V

SOUTHERN SAINTS vs MELBOURNE UNI – Sunday 3pm @ Skybus Stadium[vfl.com.au LIVE VIDEO STREAM / WARF Radio / RSN Carnival]

FORM COMING IN

The Saints (7th, 4-4) have lost three of their past four games and failed to tame the Geelong Cats last round, who ran out 38-point victors. Melbourne Uni (11th, 2-7) lost to Hawthorn by five points last week, marking the team’s fourth defeat in a row.

KEY QUESTION

Can the Saints win the contested ball? The Saints were dominated in the contest against Geelong with the Cats controlling possession for over 58 per cent of match time, and while Ali Drennan gathered 27 disposals – 12 more than any teammate – she wasn’t as damaging as in previous performances. The Mugars have a tendency to win more uncontested possessions, so if the Saints can dominate in close at stoppages, it will go a long way in helping them get back on the winners’ list.

KEY STAT

Melbourne Uni’s Danielle Hardiman was a pillar in defence in the team’s Round 10 loss to the Hawks. Gathering 16 disposals and a game-high eight marks, she was influential in limiting the strength of Hawthorn’s attack.

V

CARLTON vs COLLINGWOOD – Sunday 12pm @ RAMS Arena

LAST ENCOUNTER

2018 Rd 7 @ Warrawee Park: Collingwood 8.5 (53) d

Carlton 2.5 (17)

FORM COMING IN

Carlton (10th, 3-6) finally broke a six-game losing

streak last week, beating Williamstown by 29 points.

Collingwood (2nd, 8-0-1) remains the only undefeated

team aft er defeating the Darebin Falcons by 29 points

in Round 9 before sitting out last week with the bye.

KEY QUESTION

Can Darcy Vescio’s return spark a return to form

for the Blues? Having last been seen in Round 4,

Vescio returned to Carlton’s line-up for the win against

the Seagulls. The star forward did so in fantastic

fashion, kicking four goals in what was the highest

score for the Blues since their Round 2 win against the

Western Bulldogs.

KEY STAT

In these teams’ Round 7 clash, the biggest stat

diff erential was in the ruck battle with the Magpies

dominating hitouts 42-19. Collingwood’s Eliza Hynes

and Carlton’s Caroline Hardeman will be the two likely

candidates to start in the middle, with their battle

likely to be a highlight of the match.

GEELONG CATS vs CASEY DEMONS – Saturday 1pm @ Queens Park, Geelong

FORM COMING IN

Aft er suff ering their first two losses of the season in

back-to-back rounds, Geelong (4th, 6-2-1) returned

to winning form with a 38-point defeat of the

Southern Saints last week. The Demons (8th, 4-4)

made it three wins in a row in beating Richmond by

18 points in Round 10.

KEY QUESTION

Have the Cats got their groove back? Geelong’s

final score of 8.7 (55) was its highest total since

Round 3, with Richelle Cranston, Hayley Trevean

and ruck Erin Hoare dominating in the middle and

setting up multiple attacks forward. Jordan Ivey

was a welcome return to the line-up in her first

game back from an ACL injury and her opening goal

was a huge morale-booster for the team.

KEY STAT

Casey has stood out in recent weeks with its

dominant marking and was substantially better

in this area than any opposing team in the past

three games. Aft er being the cleaner team in wet

conditions against Essendon and the Saints, the

Demons took an impressive 35 more marks than the

Tigers last round.

AFLW U18 Champs doneA host of Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s players feature in the initial AFL Women’s U18 All Australian squad named after the conclusion of the NAB AFLW U18 Championships on the Gold Coast two weeks ago.Vic Country and Vic Metro lost only one game each (out of four) across the Championships and contributed 24 players to the 48-player All Australian squad.

Fourteen of those are currently on VFLW lists or have played VFLW games in 2018:

VIC COUNTRY: Jordyn Allen (Casey Demons) / Rene Caris (Carlton) / Georgia Clarke (Geelong Cats) / Tyla Hanks (Carlton) / Courtney Jones (Southern Saints) / Sophie Van De Huevel (Williamstown) / Rebecca Webster (Melbourne Uni)

VIC METRO: Daisy Bateman (Collingwood) / Eleanor Brown (Southern Saints) / Mikayla Cann (Hawthorn) / Hannah McLaren (Collingwood) / Georgia Macpherson (Hawthorn) / Madison Prespakis (Melbourne Uni) / Emerson Woods (Hawthorn)

The squad will now be split into two teams to face off in a curtain-raiser to the EJ Whitten Legends match at Adelaide Oval on Friday August 31, aft er which a final 22-player All Australian team will be named.

* Visit taccup.com.au to see full match details from Vic Country and Vic Metro’s games across the AFLW U18 Championships.

Top four set?A significant gap has opened up between the top four Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s teams and the chasing pack on the ladder.Hawthorn (8-1 record), Collingwood (7-0-1), NT Thunder (7-2) and the Geelong Cats (6-2-1) are now six premiership points ahead of the Darebin Falcons and Western Bulldogs (both 5-4) with six home-and-away rounds to play. Only the top four teams qualify to play finals in the VFLW.

The Falcons and Bulldogs will be looking ahead to clashes with the Hawks in Rounds 13 and 14 respectively – the only remaining games those teams have against the top four in the run home – as a chance to make up ground on the ladder.

The Southern Saints and Casey Demons (both 4-4) have played one fewer match, with the Saints still to face Hawthorn (Round 12) and Collingwood (Round 15) and the Demons still to meet Geelong (Rounds 11 and 15), NT (Round 12) and Collingwood (Round 16).

AFL Rising Star: Adam CerraFormer Eastern Ranges midfielder Adam Cerra was named the NAB AFL Rising Star nominee for Round 16.18-year-old Cerra was selected by Fremantle with pick no.5 in the 2017 NAB AFL Draft and recorded 23 disposals, seven marks and five rebound-50s in the Dockers’ 54-point loss to Melbourne in Darwin two weeks ago.

The Norwood (Eastern FL) product played 13 games for the Ranges from 2015-17 and has made 14 AFL appearances since debuting in Round 2.

Black joins MagpiesDandenong Stingrays head coach Craig Black has landed a role with Collingwood’s AFL team in the pathways/development area.Black is in his fift h year holding the coaching reins at Dandenong and has overseen the development of AFL players like Jacob Weitering (Carlton), Luke Davies-Uniacke (North Melbourne) and Hunter Clark (St Kilda).

He’ll continue leading the top-of-the-table Stingrays for the remainder of the 2018 season.

Tassie TAC Cup teamThe AFL last recently announced that a Tasmanian team would play in the TAC Cup next year under a plan to rebuild the strength of Tasmanian football. The state will also receive investment to develop young female talent and will have a TAC Cup Girls program established in 2020.

The Tassie Mariners previously competed in the TAC Cup from 1996-2002.

U18 and U16 Champs overVic Metro’s quest for a third straight NAB AFL U18 Championships title was thwarted three weeks ago, while Metro and Vic Country’s U16 teams both left Queensland without a win in the recent conclusion to the NAB AFL U16 Championships.* See match details from all U18 and U16 Championships games featuring Victorian teams on taccup.com.au.

Metro’s U18 team and South Australia were unbeaten through three games heading into what was eff ectively an U18 Championships grand final at Etihad Stadium but Metro couldn’t match SA’s star power in a 55-point defeat.

Aft er the match, Bailey Smith (Sandringham Dragons) was named Metro’s MVP of the Championships, while Vic Country co-captain Sam Walsh (Geelong Falcons) was awarded the Larke Medal for the best player in Division 1 of the Championships – following on from his Country MVP award win the previous week. Country’s spirited but ultimately winless campaign wrapped up in the previous round.

Eight TAC Cup players were selected in the NAB AFL U18 All Australian team following the conclusion of the Championships: Jacob Koschitzke (Murray Bushrangers), Isaac Quaynor (Oakleigh Chargers), Buku Khamis (Western Jets), Kyle Reid (Gippsland Power), Bailey Smith (Sandringham Dragons), Sam Walsh (captain – Geelong Falcons), Ben King (Sandringham Dragons) and Rhylee West (Calder Cannons).

Country and Metro’s U16 teams lost both games they played in on the Gold Coast two weeks ago, with Metro’s eight-point victory over Country in Round 1 the only Victorian success as South Australia claimed the overall title.

Tanner Bruhn (Geelong Falcons) and Will Phillips (Oakleigh Chargers) were named the Championships MVPs for Country and Metro respectively.
