here is hardly a branch of human activities as dependent on the we-

ather as agriculture. Agricultural produc-tion is for a large part still dependent on weather and climate despite the advances in agricultural technology over the last half a century. More than ever, agro-meteoro-logical services have become essential be-cause of the challenges provided to many forms of agricultural production by incre-asing climate variability and associated ex-treme events as well as climate change, all of which are affecting the socio-economic conditions, especially for countries like Af-ghanistan where more than 80% of people are agriculture dependent.

The agriculture sector, in Afghanistan, lacks reliable data. Despite some efforts by the donor agencies through their imple-

menting partners at the Ministry of Agri-culture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) over the last decade, the data collection and analysis systems are not able to sup-port the sector and ministry-related policy development, project/program design and monitoring of the activities. There are still the conventional data collection approa-ches in place at MAIL with less focus on the use of GIS and remotely sensed data for decision making.

The Afghanistan Agriculture Information Portal (AAIP) is a web-knowledge base and data dissemination platform for crop production statistics and crop conditions in Afghanistan. It has the role of managing and disseminating spatial (satellite images and thematic layers) and non-spatial data (crop, climatic and hydrologic) that natio-

nal or sub-national institutions generate or collect regarding crop monitoring. As a component of the Afghanistan Agriculture Information System, the Portal is develo-ped to support data and information disse-mination on crop and agro-meteorological conditions, crop estimates and forecasts. FAO and the GIS Unit of the Ministry of Agriculture. Irrigation and Livestock of Af-ghanistan (MAIL) collaborated various ti-mes and at various levels in the definition of user requirements, technical specifi-cations, data and infrastructure require-ments. The Crop Information Portal aims to provide its user community timely and actionable information useful for decision-making by top management, farmers and other stakeholders interested in crop com-modity markets.

MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE CROP PORTAL:Sharing historical and near real time agronomic, meteorological and hydrological data.

Monitoring crop conditions during main growing stages to detect stresses affecting future crop results.
