Julian M.H. Shaw, Senior Registrar, Royal Horticultural Society.

The need to bring the nomenclature used in the International register of orchid hybrids, or Sander’s

List as it is often called, into line with that presented in Genera Orchidacearum volume 6, provides

an opportunity to review the names of hybrid genera employed. These names have been published

in many different sources without coordination, and before the advent of comprehensive nomencla-

tural databases, it could be a very difficult task to check if a suitable name already existed. Hence

there is much duplication which necessitates the provision of the present list.

The list presented below has been generated from the Royal Horticultural Society’s registration da-

tabase, which contains all known hybrid generic names used for orchids. The list was originally

complied from Sander’s List of Orchid Hybrids and Addenda, as well as other sources including the

list of hybrid genera prepared by Garay and Sweet appearing in Carl Withner’s The Orchids, Scien-

tific Studies (1974), and the appendix to Hawkes, Encyclopaedia of Cultivated Orchids (1965). There

is also the extensive list prepared by Peter Hunt that appears in The handbook on orchid nomencla-

ture and registration 4th edition (1993). Peter Hunt also provided all the orchid hybrid entries in J. C.

Willis, A dictionary of the flowering plants and ferns, 8th edition (1973). These sources have all been

compared as has IPNI (International Plant Names Index, available at http://www.ipni.org) which is

an on-line successor to Index Kewensis. In most cases it has been possible to check the original

place of publication to determine: that valid publication was effected, the original spelling of the

name, the author(s), date of publication and to correct bibliographic details where necessary.

The date of publication is important in nomenclature as it establishes the age of the name, as op-

posed to the age of the hybrid. Most lists of hybrid genera focus on the date of making (pollination) or

first flowering of a new hybrid combination. While that is of horticultural and historical interest it is

the date of effective publication of the name that has to be used determine which name has date pri-

ority, (that is, the oldest), over others of the same application.

The above stages result in an unrefined list of published names. The next process is to compare each

name with the requirements of the current edition of the ICN (International code of nomenclature for

Algae, Fungi, and Plants). This reduces the number of usable names still further, as the following ex-

amples

illustrate.x Lyonara was coined to name the hybrid Trichoglottis x Vanda. However names for

bigeneric hybrids have to be constructed from parts of the two component genera rather than after a

person, so the later replacement name x Trichovanda has to be used.

When recognising Papilionanthe as distinct from Vanda, Garay and Sweet reused several hybrid ge-

neric names prefixing them with neo- while adding Papilionanthe to the component formula. Hence x

Christieara was renamed x Neochristieara, while this might have been acceptable if the name was

typifyable, it failed to satisfy the requirements of Art. H.6.4.x Opsisandra was published in 1949 for

Vanda x Vandopsis, but this fails to use the ‘first part of one genus, and part or whole of the sec-

ond’ (Art. H.6.2.), since it uses the last part of both. Hence the replacement name x Vanvanda is

now used. Similarly x Vandopsisvanda could not be used as it uses the whole of both generic names.

x Hawaiiara and x Singaporeara could not be used as they are not based on a the name of a person.

x Phalaerianda was published in 1951 for Aerides x Phalaenopsis x Vanda. Shortly afterwards, at the

request of the registrant, the then registrar published a replacement name x Tanakaria for the same

hybrid formula. However this later name cannot displace the earlier x Phalaerianda which remains

the accepted name. Once published botanical names cannot be changed unless there is a provision

or requirement to do so under the ICN. This illustrates an oft misunderstood point: grex names are

registered, while hybrid generic names are published as botanical names and are governed by a sepa-

rate code of nomenclature.

Finally, the surviving names must apply to the correct hybrid formula. The name of a hybrid genus is

regarded as a condensed formula, even if it is named for a person, rather than being constructed

from elements of the names of its constituent genera. One consequence is that hybrid generic names

cannot be typified, and hence have different properties to typified generic names. If a component

genus changes its name or becomes a synonym then every hybrid genus whose formula contains that

generic name immediately becomes invalid. Hence the reduction of Ascocentrum to Vanda had the

consequence of making all the hybrid generic names that contained Ascocentrum as a component un-

usable.

Caveat. In the following list it is the generic limits used in Genera Orchidacearum that have been

used. Hence the prompt ‘Use x Genus’, applies only within the context of that work. Recognition of

other genera treated in GO as synonyms or described since, will render these prompts unreliable.
