Mission and Objectives
Mission
Promote and contribute to aerospace system integration (ASI) across the spectrum
of applications ranging from traditional systems to complex systems and systems
of systems
Objectives
1. Actively contribute to the ASI body of work
• Advancement of the state of the art,
• Contributions to established theories and practices
2. Serve the community by pursuing the development of ASI resources with
inherent value and archival merit
3. Disseminate, share, and expose AIAA members and the community at large to
the ASI body of work
4. Collaboratively engage with relevant AIAA committees whose membership
holds subject matter expertise pertinent to ASI, and foster synergistic efforts in
support of AIAA’s mission
5. Support and participate in AIAA technical activities relating to ASI

Integration across AIAA
Integration is pervasive in aerospace engineering
• across all applications
• and is supported by fundamental skills and disciplines proper of this field
(Not surprisingly…) We find that the subject matter of ASI-WG is relevant to most if not all TCs / PCs / WGs
However…
• none are solely dedicated to integration and only a few feature emphasis on it.
• ASI-WG recognize the need to reach out to TC‟s & PC‟s whose scopes are particularly well aligned.

Participation in AIAA New Event Model
Implementation approach: „crawl – walk - run‟
• Crawl – 2013
Engage with event planning committees for ASM, Aviation, and Space
Sponsor multiple panels that showcase ASI-WG activities and provides a forum for
technical discussion around ASI
• Walk – 2014 - Alternative possible growth options
Multiple sessions mixing papers and panels
• systems integration, system-of-systems integration, complex systems, etc.
Plenary exposure
Involvement in Call-for-Papers explicitly seeking integration topics
• Run – TBD
Integration topics naturally addressed in planning
ASI-WG spotlights emergent/cutting edge issues in special sessions

area of ASI discussing initiatives to improve the state
of the art.
• Initial engagement requested with Aviation
and Space Planning Committees
• Next Steps: (and help needed!) Refine themes and expert panelists for ASM
(including session chair)
Propose specific focus areas for ASM, AVIATION,
and SPACE
Participate in ASM, AVIATION, and SPACE planning
committees and represent ASI-WG
Themes:
• Objective: Highlight importance of addressing
ASI as part of systems implementation
• Discussion items: (initial list) Effective applications of SE processes to SE Integration
Effective application of cost and schedule management
to SE Integration
- Example : Application of Value Driven Design approach
to minimize cost
Effective application of Risk management to SE
integration
Effective New technology, Heritage, and Commercial
system to SE integration
Space systems (manned and unmanned) Integration
Aircraft system (manned and unmanned) Integration
Hardware-software integration
etc, etc

GUIDELINE NEED• Industry need for comprehensive toolset of guidelines
and best practices
Leverages useful features of previous work
Application-agnostic
Builds upon fundamental systems engineering concepts
• Targets revolutionary complex vehicle systems
architecture
These architectures can produce counter-intuitive,
seemingly acausal behavior full of unpredictable surprises
GUIDELINE CHARTER
• Not development of new standard
• Guideline built upon current state of art
• Distributed Industry / Government / Academia work scope
• Balanced representation of impacted stakeholders
• Future revisions to capture state of art every 5-10 years
GUIDELINE OBJECTIVE SCOPE BOUNDARY
PLATFORM
• Consolidated current state of the art guidelines and
best practices for systems integration :
Planning
Execution
Assessment
Management
• Guidance to apply to industry accepted practices,
tools, techniques &methods to a specific application

ASI - WG Charter
• Charter Statement
The ASI-WG is a forum to promote and contribute to ASI across the spectrum of
applications ranging from traditional systems to complex systems and systems of
systems. These activities may include publications, conference organization and
participation, participation in public policy discussion and debate, and
membership solicitations partnering with AIAA technical and program committees
and the general aerospace community.
• ASI-WG is now authorized to promote/facilitate both traditional system
integration and SoS/Complex systems integration related activities as follows:
Can receive AIAA funding for the cause of ASI-WG such as for advertisement,
and cost for face-to-face meeting, and for the use of telecon/Webnar, etc.
Can establish its own Web site in AIAA Web Shared Site
Can officially advertise on AIAA media for membership solicitation
Can officially advocate the charter, missions, and activities of ASI-WG in AIAA
conferences, publications, etc
Can publish documents and papers under the ASI-WG charter stated above
Can work with other AIAA TCs, PCs and general aerospace community under
