The strong cluster of precision engineering,
medical device, automotive and aerospace
businesses in Gloucestershire means that the
County stands 50% higher than the national
average in terms of the proportion of its
employees engaged in the advanced
engineering sector.
This equates to approximately 8000 employees
and about 160 businesses. This cluster means
that businesses choosing to locate in the City of
Gloucester can draw on a highly skilled pool of
workers. The City’s location also provides easy
access to supply chains to the north and south via
the M5 motorway.

most significant aerospace clusters in the
world with Messier Dowty, GE Aviation and
Darchem Insulation Systems as key players in the
Gloucester area.
In the south-west of England, significant levels of
private and public sector investment is ensuring
that the industry remains at the forefront of
technology and innovation while simultaneously
meeting environmental challenges.
As part of the UK’s National Aerospace
Technology Strategy, the region has invested
in large R&D demonstrator programmes such

GROWING NUCLEAR CLUSTERThe City of Gloucester is home to British Energy’s
(EDF) technical and training centre at Barnwood.
This internationally renowned centre of expertise
has helped to attract major companies including
HSE Nuclear Directorate, Horizon Nuclear Power
and US company Brooks Inspection Solutions.
The recognised nuclear cluster includes ABS
Consulting, British Energy (EDF), Brooks Inspection
Systems, GE Aviation Ltd, Horizon Nuclear Power,
Magnox, Megacon Controls, Messier Dowty, Moog
Controls, National Nuclear Laboratory, Nuclear
Decommissioning Authority and Serco.
GROWING KNOWLEDGE ECONOMYA recent study by The Work Foundation placed
Gloucester as eighth out of the 56 main knowledge
economies in the country. The figures are backed
up by a league table of the productivity of different
cities across the UK showing that in the past
decade, Gloucester has increased its GVA,
a standard measure of productivity, by 73%.
Gloucester is fast becoming one of the Country’s
success stories as it has achieved substantial gains
in growth over the last 10 years by attracting higher

statistics rank Gloucester with the likes of Reading,

schools, a University of Gloucestershire campus
and the County’s largest further education college,
