GLOUCESTER•Home to the invention of the jet engine

•A strong tradition in aerospace and

advanced engineering

•Skills for future innovation

The strong cluster of precision engineering,

medical device, automotive and aerospace

businesses in Gloucestershire means that the

County stands 50% higher than the national

average in terms of the proportion of its

employees engaged in the advanced

engineering sector.

This equates to approximately 8000 employees

and about 160 businesses. This cluster means

that businesses choosing to locate in the City of

Gloucester can draw on a highly skilled pool of

workers. The City’s location also provides easy

access to supply chains to the north and south via

the M5 motorway.

ADVANCED ENGINEERING

“We are able to tap into the strong work ethic and

highly skilled workforce within the aerospace sector

and enjoy an enviable location in Gloucestershire

benefitting from an outstanding geographical position

for the M5, Birmingham and Bristol.”

World leader in landing gear, employing over 800 at its UK facility.

AEROSPACEGloucestershire has one of the largest and

most significant aerospace clusters in the

world with Messier Dowty, GE Aviation and

Darchem Insulation Systems as key players in the

Gloucester area.

In the south-west of England, significant levels of

private and public sector investment is ensuring

that the industry remains at the forefront of

technology and innovation while simultaneously

meeting environmental challenges.

As part of the UK’s National Aerospace

Technology Strategy, the region has invested

in large R&D demonstrator programmes such

as Environmentally Friendly Engine, Civil

Unmanned Air Systems and Next Generation

Composite Wing.

GLOUCESTERSHIRE HAS ONE OF THE LARGEST AND MOST SIGNIFICANT AEROSPACE CLUSTERS IN THE WORLD

has helped to attract major companies including

HSE Nuclear Directorate, Horizon Nuclear Power

and US company Brooks Inspection Solutions.

The recognised nuclear cluster includes ABS

Consulting, British Energy (EDF), Brooks Inspection

Systems, GE Aviation Ltd, Horizon Nuclear Power,

Magnox, Megacon Controls, Messier Dowty, Moog

GROWING KNOWLEDGE ECONOMYA recent study by The Work Foundation placed

Gloucester as eighth out of the 56 main knowledge

economies in the country. The figures are backed

up by a league table of the productivity of different

cities across the UK showing that in the past

decade, Gloucester has increased its GVA,

a standard measure of productivity, by 73%.

Gloucester is fast becoming one of the Country’s

success stories as it has achieved substantial gains

in growth over the last 10 years by attracting higher

value businesses and highly skilled people. The

statistics rank Gloucester with the likes of Reading,

Newcastle, Bristol, and Manchester.

EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCEThe City benefits from a highly educated and

skilled workforce and leading-edge R&D expertise.

University support is provided by Bristol,

Bath, Exeter, the University of the West of

England and Plymouth; these provide particular

specialisms which include composite materials,

aerodynamics, additive layer manufacturing,

advanced machining and systems engineering.

Aerospace also plays a key role in developing new,

low carbon technologies.

In addition, located in the City are four grammar

schools, a University of Gloucestershire campus

and the County’s largest further education college,

Gloucestershire College.

PRIME SITES AND ATTRACTIVE RENTSThe City’s excellent location at the heart of

the motorway network, plus a high quality

environment, makes it a good choice for

companies wishing to relocate or expand.

Close to the city are two of the most significant

new business parks in the region - Gloucester

Business Park and Waterwells Business Park.

Elsewhere in the City, a range of property sites and

land is also available at attractive rents.

A CITY AT THE HEART OF A THRIVING COUNTYA combination of easy access to key markets and

supply chains, a solid infrastructure, a growing

economy, a skilled workforce and an unbeatable

quality of life, makes the County of Gloucestershire

a first choice location for the businesses in the

advanced engineering sector. Price Waterhouse

Coopers have noted that “together, these assets

form an exceptionally powerful base for economic

prosperity. Gloucestershire’s future economic

prosperity must be seen as amongst the best

in the UK”.

The City of Gloucester is at its heart.

“MessageLabs was founded in Gloucester

and quickly grew to become an

international business employing over

500 people. As a result of this success the

business was acquired by Symantec in
