Welcome to first GBR/CAA newsletter of 2008. As agreed at the AGM you will have received this newsletter on your doormat rather than your inbox. The online newsletter worked well but the membership prefered a professionally printed newsletter deliverd to the door.

In the digital age that we now live it was agreed that GBR/CAA news is accessable instantly 24 hours a through our very successful website and forum. Incidentally we have recently passed 1 million page views on our forum in 20 months - quite an achievment! Our Association News will only be published twice this year as content was dwindling at the end of last year. The second edition will only be published towards the end of the year if sufficient content is received, I therefore urge you to send anything of interest - this is your newsletter and only survives through contributions. Please don’t wait until the deadline and send in your photo’s, news and competition reports.

Membership RenewalsIts that time of year again to renew your GBR/CAA membership. You’ll find an application form in this edition of the newsletter and on our website. Please send the completed form along with your cheque to our Secretary, his address can be found on the page opposite. Please make sure you get your renewal in by the end of March as from the 1st April you will no longer receive GBR/CAA correspondance and have access to the members area of our forum. To those who have already renewed, rejoined or joined for the first time, thank you, welcome and we look forward to seeing you at a GBR/CAA event in the near future.

2008 Competition CalendarThis years competition calendar can be found on the centre fold of this issue. Domestic competitions are filling up fast, it is now common practice for CD’s to post entries and competition details in the Competition section of our forum, so please check here for latest availability and news. Could I also request that CD’s contact our Competition Secretary before posting on the website to avoid clashes and keep the master calendar up to date. This allows planning for judges and helps aviod clashes with training days and other competitions that are being planned.

GBR/CAA Picture GalleryI have updated our website with a new picture gallery. Please have a look when you are next online - http://www.gbrcaa.org/Photo/. Members can now upload photo’s and add comments. If you wish to upload a photo please make sure they are well composed, good quality and include a short description (Naming the file with the description is the easiest way). The gallery includes software to compress pictures so do not worry about doing this first.

2008 SeasonLastly, may I wish all members a successful and more importantly fun 2008 season - only 8 weeks till the first competition!

JR X9303 2.4Ghz sets. After very careful and complete discussion with the RCPTC the use of this equipment at UK events should be disallowed with immediate effect. It is now known that this set has a power output greater than is type approved for legal use in the UK, it is also believed that there is currently no detuning software available for this set for which to be used to correct the output power and therefore allow legal use within the UK. On this basis, we have no option but to withdraw the permitted use of this system from our events with immediate effect. Should any further instruction on the use of this system become available to us, we shall of course review this action and advise accordingly.

Spektrum 2.4Ghz Replacement Module Alteration. It has been recognised by committee that some owners of the Spektrum 2.4Ghz replacement modules that are available for various sets in the UK, are modifying their modules to incorporate an internal aerial connection. Whilst it is recognised that this alteration is being carried out through the interests of safe use and the subsequent avoidance of damage to the aerial connection through continued use and exposure, we should take the time to consider the legal implications of any alterations undertaken by the end user. Type approval of any given piece of equipment is only valid for the piece of equipment in its original state, subsequent alteration to said equipment would normally require further submission for testing and type approval by the person altering the said piece of equipment, however, self-certification can be applied by the person who has carried out the alteration but this would be called in to question upon any problem arising from the use of the altered equipment. You are therefore advised to research and understand your legal obligations as a result of your alterations.

Regards, GBR/CAA Committee

Futaba 2.4GHz FASSTEvery individual FASST transmitter/module contains a unique eight digit identification code, programmed at the factory to identify each transmitter. This allows a receiver to be linked with that transmitter so no other transmitter will work that receiver.

Because of this unique coding, it is extremely important that the transmitter/module is not switched on and then off again in under 5 seconds, as this can, on rare occasions, cause the unit to revert to the common code.

In the event that the link with your receiver is lost, or that any interference is detected, please immediately return your transmitter and receiver to the place of purchase for testing. If a problem is found it should not be used and returned to the Ripmax Futaba Service Centre.

Please note that sets using the TM-14 module are not affected by this issue.

Proposal 3All competitors who wish to compete for a team place will be required to tick a box on the entry form. This will give them a priority entry, but their models will be weighed & noise tested. If the model fails the weight & noise tests, the resultant flight scores will still count for the competition and the league but NOT for a team place.

6. Approval of Accounts

See appendix 2 for accounts.

Stuart Mellor read out the accounts on behalf of the Treasurer. It was highlighted that the work done by the committee at the first committee meeting of the year had turned the accounts around.

Alan Simmonds appreciated the savings made, but have we cut back too far? Comments from the Chairman suggest that one year was not long enough to get a clear picture. General consensus is to get more money in the bank and ensure that we are on a stable footing. No money spent this year, nothing spent on PRO and if no sponsorship from Triple Crown then we have an expensive event to stage. Bob Ailles said a laptop is required as members personal laptops are currently being used for Association business.

Keith Jackson commented that some money should be spent on attracting new members through PRO, falling membership will mean less income.

Brian Hoare highlighted that more money could be made from advertising and the association should be active in getting more income. Aeropaint pays half the amount on 3DRC.

Action – Committee. Investigate advertising opportunities on the website. Volunteer maybe required if any significant work is involved.

Query on the £173 income and expenditure of the same amount for Argentina 2007 but does not appear in the Team Travel account.

Action – Stephen Greenwood.

*Confirmation from the Treasurer by telephone after the AGM confirming that the £173 was split equally and paid directly to team members for the trip to Argentina.

Accounts approved with a proviso for the above query.

Proposed: R AillesSeconded: A SimmondsFor: 22Against: 0Abstentions: 1Passed

7. ElectionofOfficers

Power Tech Rep, John Mee is standing down this year leaving the position open for nominations.

10 11

Andy Prime has been nominated by John Mee, seconded by Bob Ailles.Passed unanimously.

Other committee positions were unopposed.

8. Proposals

a) Committee Proposals

Proposal 1Subscriptions to remain unchanged in 2008. (£37)Seconded: J. MeeCarried Unanimously

Proposal 2Comp. Fees – Centralised entry fees (FAI) to be increased by £3 to £25. No change in domestic entry fees.

Comments made that the centralised fee may put some pilots off entering and thus reduce income, it had already been agreed that we should try to increase our income.

It was noted that for BMFA specialist body affiliation we are required to run 3 centralised events. The committee proposal was aim to run centralised events in line with the committee directive to run every competition without a loss. The discussion centred on what would increase the income of centralised competitions.

John Harrop suggested that any deficit in centralised competitions would be funded from the Team Travel Account. John Mee pointed out that the team were receiving extra money from the RC Power Tech.

Amended Proposal.Centralised fee’s to remain at £22 and any profit/loss from Centralised competitions be transferred to/from the Team Travel account.

Proposed: J HarropSeconded: R HirstPassed Unanimously

Proposal 3For 2008, the structure of Centralised Events and the associated Team Selection process was agreed at the Interested Parties Meeting held on 14th July 2007. Details were subsequently published by the GBRCAA Secretary on the Association’s Website on 16th July 2007.

Under cover of the breathing space that this provides, it is proposed that a strategic review should be conducted into the structures and processes to be adopted for 2009 and beyond. This would include:

An in-depth consultation exercise to seek the views of interested parties including:• GBRCAA FAI Pilots

• SAA FAI Pilots• GBRCAA Committee Members• GBRCAA FAI Full Time Judges

The drafting of a discussion paper based on the consultation exercise, aimed at covering:• Number of competitions• Venues• Timing• Schedules to be flown• Fees and Finance• Contest Direction• Scoring and Team Selection• Team Management including Training and Preparation for International

Championships.

It is intended that the above exercises should be led by Bob Wasson and carried out in accordance with the following timescale:

Completion of initial consultation exercise - end February 2008First draft of the Discussion Paper - end March 2008Presentation of Final Proposals to Interested Parties Meeting – mid 2008

Seconded: K MossPassed Unanimously

Clarification of the above proposal.Allow proxy votes at the IP meeting for those people who are unable to attend.

Bob Wasson is co-opted onto the committee to fulfil this duty and arrangements for the Triple Crown 2008.

Proposal 7

“Proposal to change to the constitution as follows: From: 21. The team selection process shall be decided by any interested parties at a team selection meeting to be held before the end of June each year before the team selection process starts. To: 21. The team selection process shall be decided by members of the GBRCAA registered on the ‘members forum’ of the GBRCAA website and voted upon in an official TSP poll. The official TSP poll, which shall be open for a duration of one week at the end of June in the year prior to the implementation of any team selection rule changes, will be preceded by a discussion period on an open forum of at least 1 month during which members can discuss and formulate proposals to go forward to the official TSP poll. At the committee’s discretion and should it be necessary to take more than one vote, the voting period may be extended and a sequence of multiple official polls may be used in order to arrive at a TSP formula in a step by step manner. Reasons: 1. Cost - There is no cost to the members or the Association 2. Accessibility - Most members have access to the forum whereas the majority are unable/unwilling to travel long distances to attend the interested parties meeting but may still have valid arguments. Disadvantage: In order to prevent the possibility of unfair voting (cheating!), it will be necessary to use the ‘member’s forum’ thus precluding all non GBRCAA members. Note: It may also be desirable for members to cast their vote in the form of a message rather than just click a radio button anonymously.” Proposal Withdrawn.

Proposal 8

a. The Interested Party Meeting be discontinued as a method for determining Team Selection Process. Instead a process involving on-line discussion and postal vote to be used. The IP meeting generally does not draw attendance from pilots who are involved in Team selection due to busy work schedules, costs of travel etc. In addition the cost of hiring a venue for this meeting adds an additional burden to GBRCAA funds. It would be better to have an on-line discussion as per the method used for the AGM, supported by a final list of proposals to be sent via letter to all parties who are involved. A postal vote would then be used to determine the selection process. Where requested by the individual, the postal return could be substituted by email correspondence.

b. Involvement in the Team Selection Process be limited to relevant members. This would include any pilots who have participated in previous team selection events, judges and members of the committee. This proposal adds to the first to limit the numbers involved in the Team Selection Process to relevant individuals.

Proposal Withdrawn.

Proposal 9Both Px and Fx schedules to be used in centralised (i.e. team selection events), (x denotes year number). Ratio of schedules: 2 Round competitions: 1 of POx, 1 of FOx 3 Round competitions: 2 of POx, 1 of FOx 4 Round competitions: 2 of POx, 2 of FOx Counting rounds as per normal guidelines.

Proposal Withdrawn.

Proposal 10Currently team position is determined by position in the Centralised League table so regardless of the pilots scores, if they achieve a high place based on attendance, they can be considered for a team position. I suggest that a minimum average raw score of 65% over the counting competitions should be stipulated as a requirement for team qualification. If the situation arises where a team position becomes vacant due to not enough pilots attaining the minimum average raw score, then the committee would have jurisdiction to select a pilot they deem fit to fill the vacant position.

Proposal withdrawn.

Proposal 11The Triple Crown represents a local event that can be utilised by the UK team to act as a

11

practise for International team events later in the year. It provides the only opportunity for the team to practice together before attending the latter events. As such the experience can be used as an invaluable shakedown process that might highlight difficulties that would otherwise occur at the said international events. In addition the UK team performance at the Triple Crown has not been satisfactory in recent years and should not be allowed to decline further. The proposal is that any pilots intending to fly in the UK ‘A’ team at International Team events must as a requirement for a team position, participate in the Triple Crown event in the same year. Attendance at this event should be of higher priority that attending European events such as Romily in France and Civrry in Belgium.

Proposal Withdrawn.

Appendix1–OfficersReports

R/C Power Tech GBR/CAA Delegate report to the 2007 AGM

The R/C Powertech committee have had a very busy year with 4 meetings including the Plenary in December 2006. At this meeting officers were elected from the floor and consisted of 7 members, in edition the specialist bodies are accepted and consisted of the following:-

BWA (British Water Plane Association.)JMA (Jet Modellers Association.)IMAC (International Miniature Aerobatic Club U.K)AHA (Aerobatic Helicopter Association)BMPRA British Miniature Pylon Race Association)F5D ( Electric Pylon have now joined the RCPT and will be represented by the BMPRA.)

I must emphasise how important it is to have good representation on this committee, this is our route to voicing our opinion and tabling requests to the BMFA.

At the plenary we have to put forward out team for the coming year together with the name of our team manager for the next World or European Championships. This I did and proposed our team of Angus Balfour, John Harrop and Kevin Caton with our team manager Alison Harrop for the Argentina W.C. they were all duly accepted. At the next meeting we had to replace Angus Balfour who withdrew with our first reserve Keith Jackson, at this time we had to submit our first and second reserves. As I report it here it all sounds quite straight forward I can assure you it wasn’t and involved lots of phone calls for Alison Harrop and myself.

I reported at the last AGM that we had applied to the BMFA for a Training and excellence budget of £600 the good news is we were successful. We held three training sessions at RAF Cottesmore, the first was for the Triple Crown Team who I think found it well worthwhile, I would like to thank all of those involved for their enthusiasm for making it a success. We ran two further training days again at RAF Cottesmore which is ideal for the purpose it’s quite we are left alone and gives the team the opportunity to work together which they all did. I have submitted an application for the same again for 2008 hopefully we will have it confirmed earlier in the year than last to enable us to plan the dates to suit all team members.

1 1

Throughout the year the committee have worked tirelessly on a draft from the JMA/GTBA of a code of practice to ensure the safe operation of gas turbines, this ended up being a 37 page document and should be ratified tomorrow at the plenary.

At each meeting in the past year we have discussed the issues surrounding 2.4GHZ radios this information was passed on to the membership via the BMFA news. This equipment took everyone by surprise and as we all know moved very quickly into the market place. The discussion will go on and is included on each agenda for discussion.

At the last meeting of the current year I submitted our nominations for team manager Judges and delegate to the CIAM. The names proposed were Alison Harrop Team Manager, John Mee CIAM F3A delegate, Bob Ailles and David Tappin as Judges in addition Peter Cappleman and Dave Scoles who were proposed by the RCPT, all were ratified and now go to the BMFA Council for final approval before submission to the CIAM.

It’s been a very busy year with GBR/CAA and RC Powertech business, it’s been a pleasure working with both committee’s, I will be stepping down from both and wish our new GBR/CAA committee every success for 2008. I would also like to wish all members a Happy Christmas and prosperous new year, and may you have many competition successes in 2008.

Regards John Mee

Newsletter Editor Report – 2007 AGM.Online newsletter from the editor’s perspective has worked reasonably well, only a small amount of time is needed to convert a read copy to a print copy. Biggest problem has been getting the information to Stuart so he can print the newsletter so and send it to those members that want a printed copy. Is the quality good enough to be sent out, are we creating the right impression? Significant delays have happened because of this. Advertisers have been lost due to the newsletter predominantly only being available online. Emerald Hobbies have advertised in the latest newsletter, the only reply received after emailing about 10 companies.

Content and input from members and the committee has dwindled as the year has gone on. Steve Dunning, Bill Michie, Andy Prime, Angus Balfour, Nigel Kern, Keith Jackson, Clive Whitwood, Richard Christopher, Alison Harrop and Ashley something or other - thank you for your contributions. Disappointed at the lack of input from the committee despite emails every quarter asking for info and posts on the forum. Why is this?

I also feel the newsletter is somewhat out of touch with today’s societies want for instant information. Today members know the results and can see photographs of that weekend’s competition on the web within a few days. Where does the newsletter fit into this as at times I feel like I am wasting my time with an inordinate amount of effort?

My proposal for the newsletter going forward would be to reduce to a single issue a year, issued early in the New Year. This can therefore contain a review of the previous season, membership renewal information, the following year’s competition calendar, AGM minutes etc, committee reports and any other articles. I propose this to be a high quality printed document distributed by post to all members an also available to view online in the members area. This will meet the demands of advertisers (hopefully attract more), satisfy the need for a printed version to your doorstep (no more fiddling with the printer), no longer trying to compete with the BMFA news articles and website information and with only one per year not cost the association too much money.

GBR/CAA WebsiteLittle maintenance but I update regularly with comp reports, league table, important information, members requests and anything else that is relevant to the association. Am I wasting my time uploading pictures after every comp, do members look at them? Should this continue, usually takes me about 45 minutes per competition depending on the number of photos and if I’m adding comments it takes much longer. Not to mention all the effort made in updating renewal forms, updating the competition calendar and updating schedules.

Expense forms, score sheets and a Newsletter archive have all been put on the website this year. We are currently using 70%+ of our allotted space (1000Mb).

Forum Commercial SectionI have setup a Commercial section on the Forum, initially with Aeropaint and Elation Models. Free of charge for an initial trial period. Idea being the traders can use this area to advertise products and services and also allow members to ask specific questions regarding their products. I thought this would be an excellent advertising opportunity. Forum regularly gets 50,000 pages view per month and has 250+ registered users.

Recently I have added FlightTech due to sponsorship given to GBR/CAA members. They have been excellent contributors and added some excellent information (after a little push and some ideas from me.) Emerald Hobbies are a welcome recent addition.

PUBLIC RELATIONSNPODSI would like to thank all member of the Association who have helped to make our NPODs (New pilots open days) a success. You may remember the first of these was held at Gainsborough last October when 15 pilots attended. They received some advice while flying the manoeuvres from our mentors in the form of Ken Moss, Bob Wasson and Matt Hoyland. Bob Rowland, myself, Chris Bond, Steve Haywood looked after the administration and judging side of the procedures with the help of Charlotte Haywood, Steve Hunt (none member) and Steve Dunning. The second NPOD at Bickley Model Flying Club on the 30 January attracted 20 flyers. Stuart Turrell, Richard Christopher, Garry Peacock, Eugene Anker and Mike Williams (please forgive me if I have left anyone out) should be congratulated on their efforts. Our thanks should also go to the Chairman and Committee of BMAC for providing the site and lots of help. I understand the tea and coffee and particularly the barbecue went down very well. By request we are running a second at Gainsborough on the 30 March and we have another planned in the Bristol area later in the year.

These days could go from strength to strength but the initiative has to come from Association members and you will get a huge amount of satisfaction if you organise one. We will not see a rush of new members at any particular time but they will, none the less, attract new members. These days set the seeds in club flyers minds, and may just set the challenge for long term club flyers to go on to bigger and better things. If you want to run such a day I will give you all the help and information I have gathered in the form of planning and check lists for organising the day, and I will attend to help if possible. You will need to borrow a flying field and prepare yourself for a bit of work but you will find it all very rewarding.

I sometimes wonder, if we do attract many new members with our efforts, if we will be able to offer spaces in our competitions to accommodate them all.

Communication.

ComputerOur web site and forum are hitting new heights with over 1 million page views on the forum since it was launched in June 2006. A few posts have been deleted for various reasons before many readers have accessed them, but none without the author being informed and full agreement being reached. The web site has also seen some updates. The main new facility is that members can upload your own photographs into folders and of course all the ongoing information being updated for the new season. All of this work has fallen on Matt’s shoulders and I would like to thank him on behalf of the Association for the hundreds of hours of work he has spent of his own time working for the Association. Also thanks must go to Alan Simmonds and John Mee (the other two members of the web team) for their help, advice and cooperation.

Other mediaI have been successful in getting two magazines to publish our competition dates (or at least a promise to do so) and still waiting for a response from two others. I will also provide the BMFA with the same information for inclusion on their web site and in the BMFA News.

ClubsI have not vigorously pursued club talks as I have not managed to acquire the data projector which forms a major part of the presentations. I understand Andy Prime may have some plans for a club talk in his area, thank you Andy. I was pleased to be able to provide the Power Point presentation to Mel Garlick for his club presentation, thank you again for your help on this one.

Help - JudgesYou will see in the next BMFA News Issue 87 that I have started to ask on behalf of Bob Ailles if there are any budding judges read our column. I am sure Bob would be the first to say that if any member hears of any suitable person who would like to join us in this capacity to let him know.

Judging Take-Off and Landing for all schedules except FAI.Followed overwhelming enthusiasm at the AGM to retain the judging of Take-off and Landing procedures in all classes except FAI, I am sure Bob will not mind me reminding everyone that this is the case and that it should be fully embraced. The judges notes for take-off and landing can be found here. http://www.gbrcaa.org/schedules.htm

A few weeks before:-

We managed to get new flyers, up to 19 new pilots and was so happy to get that amount. Getting the Mentors organised of Richard Christopher who assisted me, Garry Peacock, Mike Williams and Jason Collins. What a pity that Bill Michie was called out for his work so he was out. During the two weeks Rich and I organised the calling cards, trim leaflets and setting up the flight orders.

A few days before, 2 of the pilots were called out because of the work situation, which meant we were down to 17. The day before I went out to the field with Bob Ryan (Chairman of BMFC) setting up the markers, flags, and gas bottles for the hot drinks etc.

On the day 27th I was up very early and went to the field to get a few things ready. First Richard arrived and we got his plane and mine out to the field. Then few started to arrive with no problems with the directions to the field. I introduced myself to the new pilots and registered them on the list. 9.15am and the pilots briefing was done by myself, followed by Bob Ryan for rules of the field. It was a bit windy, but sunny. First off at 9.30am was Richard Christopher with his Brio electric plane to do the demo. First new pilot was Bob with his Electric Otop doing his schedule with Richard (mentor), next was Mike Johnson with his electric Angle S with Garry Peacock (mentor), followed by Nigel Smith and Ricky with their electric planes as we’re only allowed electric before 10.30am. Once 10.30 arrived IC powered planes went up, first was Eugene, John Veasey, Simon Webber, Gregg Veasey, Danny Wenham, Keith Pepper, his son Chaz Pepper using his dad’s plane, Keith Barnes, Tony Morgan, Steve Brett, Mark Pugh and Charles Smithman.

It went very well in the first round, after we had to change to a different flight line to avoid the sun. What a pity with Nigel Smith and Mark Pugh. Nigel Smith was struggling with outside loops and was called by Gregg that there’s something wrong with the stabilizer, luckily he brought the plane down safe finding the tail plane got break in half. Mark Pugh flew so well and with his light plane and was tricky to land. Opps!! The wind got him and ended up with the wing coming off. (Blame the wind!!!) 2nd round flights went very well with improvements from all of the new flyers.

I was so busy to get every pilot and mentor on the move I ended up without a break!!! Eugene did a fine job doing the Frequency control throughout the day without any mishaps. Jason did a great judging job on a few pilots to see how the pilots were scoring. In between rounds we managed to let the club flyers in who were not in the NPOD. Hot drinks were available most of the day and burgers made by BMFC to keep the pilots warm. A special thank you to Bob Ryan who kept the kettle and BBQ running all day. In the end we just managed to do 3 rounds with a few pilots keen to make a move back home. The last pilot was Chaz Pepper who flew so well with the mentoring of Richard Christopher in which both father and son are very keen on entering GBRCAA competition. We finished the last flight just before the sun goes down at 5.00 pm. I’m sure that most of the new pilots have learnt a lot and had an interesting introduction to do the art of aerobatics.

Looking forward to seeing some of them at some competitions.

In the end tidied up and went home. You know what!!!! I was knackered so went to bed early after all!!!

BICKLEY - NPOD 08

Some views on the Bickley NPOD from a mentor’s point of view……

I remember being lucky enough to receive some tuition at prior to my first ever competition (after it had been cancelled due to torrential rain!) from Keith Jackson and Phil Williams at Cashmoor. This was my first introduction to precision aerobatics and they offered a link between me as a “club flyer” and the GBRCAA.

This is why I was happy to help out when I heard of the interest in the Bickley NPOD that was being arranged by Stuart. I have to say I found the whole process very rewarding. The level of enthusiasm at the NPOD was exceptional and I would encourage members to help and support future events where possible.

The conditions were very testing, but everyone coped remarkably well. One of the three “newbie’s” that had been allocated to me for mentoring was the son of a “father and son team”. Both expressed a keen interest in F3A. Chaz, at the age of 10 or 11 I think, already has a good grasp of the fundamentals required for F3A and was quick to take on board the help on offer. I hope we will see them at some competitions soon.

The mix of GBRCAA flying and club flying worked well thanks to Stuart and Eugene’s flight line control. It was good to see members of the Bickley club taking part too. The club Chairman was one of those who had a go, and chose to fly the Masters schedule. Most others chose to fly the Clubman or Intermediate schedules (or elements from them).

I heard many complimentary comments on the day and Stuart should be proud. After all, without his efforts this day may not have happened. We must make these days a regular feature on the calendar - can you help at future NPOD’s? You will find it rewarding and the association will grow stronger. Richard Christopher.NPOD Mentor

F3A WORLD CHAMPSSanta Fe - Argentina

Power systems

I bring this up first because its always seems to be at the front of the conversations! There was about a 50/50 split e-power to glow power....so here goes.

Electric - Lots of electric, motors mostly dominated with Hacker, and I would say a fairly even split on Flight Power and Thunder Power batteries. For outrunners the Plettenberg was the most used. Most of the electric setups (that I saw and I did not see all of them) were flying faster than in previous years.

20x15 props, 20.5x14, 21x14 etc were probably the most common. All in all its fairly mature but people are still learning how to really make things work, this was evident as there were ESC failures, battery failures etc. Counter-rotating props, there were two being used, very cool. I was told by Seba that it works great, and I am sure it does. It is a much more complicated setup, and heavier (if nothing else it has two props!). While it may be an improvement, is it worth the con’s that go along with it? Personally I don’t think so. I don’t think you will see much in the way of electric power changes in the short term, most seem very satisfied with the systems that they are using.

Glow - Ok, the usual suspects were out and about. The 170DZ was quite popular, and YS is by far the most used glow motor out there. They seemed to run very well and had no struggles with power. The OS 200 4-stroke was being used by a few people, and it has a softer lower sound than the YS, and also a tremendous amount of power. Nothing really new here either, just continued development.

There was the odd fail to start with the glow models....and a few dead sticks related to the heat. One of which probably cost CPLR the world champion title!

Planes

There were a ton of Oxai models at the Worlds, Zeque’s, Astrals etc. They were very prevalent and all seemed to fly very well. Integrals were extremely popular as well, mostly Composite ARF versions but there were a number of ZN Line versions as well. I heard that 10% of the models were Integrals.

A lot of people were using the CPLR T-Canalizer and most felt it offered an improvement. I saw a lot of flared rudder trailing edges, something I was doing about 3 years ago on my Enigma’s!

The big thing is the bipes, there were not many, but one did win the Worlds. Is this the beginning of the end of the mono-plane in pattern? I certainly

hope not. Personally I felt Onda’s Narlar which is a newer version of what he had in France and Poland was by far the better performer in flight. Not to take anything away from Quique and his Euphoria but I felt it looked a bit twitchy in the conditions compared to Onda’s which flew very locked in. To me this is simply a case of time, Onda and Naruke have been flying and improving that bipe for years, where the Euphoria is a new design without the advantage of that level of refinement.

They did handle the wind well, but they are big and I don’t think could be done electric power and meet weight limits. This will limit guys like me from pursuing those airplanes at least for now :)

Flying Styles

Nothing really changed here from France, with the exception of the electric guys generally being propped faster. Some pilots flew very tight and quick with a high level of sharpness on the corners, while other flew a little deeper and more open styles. I would say it was split about 50/50 in the top 10 between those two styles, with Onda, CPLR, Seba, BPLR, Akiba being the latter, and Jason, Andrew, Carrier being the former, with QQ and Suzuki some where in between.

So did the right guy win? I think so. From what I saw in the finals QQ really didn’t put up a “wow” flight but they were very good. Onda flew excellent, but his unknowns suffered as a result of missing snap rotations. I really think he will be World champion one day. CPLR flew the last two rounds like you would expect him to....but part of pattern is keeping your equipment running. I really felt like he was on his way to winning the F-07 round when his motor quit.

Regardless of the outcome it was the closest result in quite some time, and I think everyone was on edge waiting for the results as it was impossible to know for certain who won.

I do find it somewhat discouraging that the US, Japanese and French teams are so strong. It leaves only 1 position in the finals for someone who was not from those countries. However, I suppose it demonstrates a level of focus in F3A that the rest of us don’t have and maybe we should pull up our socks before 2009 :)

Enough of that....spring is approaching!

FAI CENTRALISED EVENTS AND TEAM SELECTION PROCESSES

For 2008, the structure of Centralised Events and the associated Team Selection process was agreed at the Interested Parties Meeting held on 14th July 2007. Details were subsequently published by the GBRCAA Secretary on the Association’s Website on 16th July 2007.

At the GBRCAA AGM held on 8th December 2007, it was agreed unanimously, that a Strategic Review should be conducted into the structures and processes to be adopted for 2009 and beyond.

The Purpose of the Review was to develop structures and processes that:

• Ensured that the best teams available within the UK were selected fairly and prepared properly for international competition

• Encouraged both experienced and less experienced pilots to participate• Provided longer term stability and reduced the need for constant tinkering and short term

fixes• Were self financing

By the close of the initial consultation period, a total of 17 members had submitted a wide range of ideas and suggestions. One published his thoughts on the Members Section of the Association Website, and a further 16 contacted the author directly by either E-Mail or by telephone. The author expresses his deep appreciation to those who took the time and trouble to respond.

By now, members should have had the chance to read the 1st Draft of the Discussion Document. Comments on this were invited by end March 2008 after which a second draft will be produced. It is intended that this should be published in good time for Interested Parties (IP’s) to absorb the content prior to an IP Meeting that will be scheduled for mid 2008. Subject to any final amendments and endorsement at the IP Meeting, the new proposals will come into play from 1st January 2009.

Every effort has been made to make the exercise as wide ranging as possible and to give everyone the chance to have their say. Hopefully this will address the declining level of participation in Centralised Events and result in a more open process that ensures that our very best pilots are selected fairly and prepared properly for international competition.

Regards,Bob Wasson

Masters 08-09 Judging Notes01 Take-off Sequence

Judging NotesThe take-off is possibly the most important manoeuvre of all, as it is the first manoeuvre you fly in front of the judges, so it is up to you to show us how good you are. The take-off should be flown with the same precision and grace as all the other manoeuvres in the schedule. All turns should be as flat as possible to give a good impression in the judges’ eye of smoothness and gracefulness.

The take-off should be flown with the same precision and grace as all the other manoeuvres in the schedule; all turns should be as flat as possible to give a good impression to the judges of smoothness, control and gracefulness.

The procedure for take-off is as follows:1. The model should be placed on the runway by your helper facing into wind with a very slow idle and released. When released the helper should not touch the model again as this could be classed as an assisted take-off. However a point of safety should be considered in a crosswind or on rough ground where the model may ‘weathercock’ towards the pilot, judges, pits or spectator line. It may be necessary to hold the tail of the model while the engine revs are increased and the model moves forward to overcome any resistance of the undercarriage wheels and the rudder has some authority2. The pilot slowly applies the power and the model moves off in a straight line. When flying speed is reached the model lifts off with wings level and a gentle rate of climb which should not exceed an angle of 30 degrees. Power can now be reduced to allow the model to fly at the speed which you like to fly through the schedule.3. The pilot now proceeds to turn the model 90 degrees into a crosswind leg with the model still climbing towards the preferred baseline height. At the appropriate distance out the model should turn upwind to start its 270 degree turn into the downwind trimming pass, which should be positioned over the 150 metres markers. When approximately level with the downwind marker the pilot initiates a turn-around manoeuvre of his choice. Do not rush the takeoff a rushed take-off normally leads to a rushed flight and points lost.

Possible downgrades1. Assisted take-off: zero points. (see notes above)2. Model does not track straight on take-off: 1-2 points. Beware of the flying surface I.E. ruts and pot holes on grass sites.3. Wings not level after take off : 1 point per 15 degrees.4. Rate of climb too steep: 1-2 points above 30 degrees.5. Model goes behind judge’s line after take-off: zero points.6. Model retouches runway after lift off: 1 point.7. Bits come off model on take off: zero points. (This is just a reminder of the rules which apply to the whole flight).8. The 90 degree turn is not 90 degrees: 1 point per 15 degrees.9. The 270 degree turn is not 270 degrees: 1 point per 15 degrees.10.The model is flown in too close or too far out on completion of turn-around manoeuvre: 1-3 points depending on its severity. Judges you need to be careful about what is considered to be too close or too far out. The criterion set out in the judges’ guide suggests 100-175 metres.

02 45 Degree Up 1 1/2 Snap Roll Pos. Exit Inverted: Pull to 45deg up and perform a 1 ½ positive snap roll.

Judging Notes The 45 degree line is not at 45 degrees; apply the one point per 15-degree rule. The snap roll is not in the centre of vertical line nor over the centre flag; apply the one point per 15-degree rule. The exit must be inverted.

03 Half Square Loop, 1/2 roll down. Exit Inverted: Push to a vertical down line and perform a half roll.

Judging Notes The down line must be vertical, the line lengths before and after the roll must be equal. Exit must be inverted.

04 Half Outside Loop Into 2 1/2 Turn Spins: Fly past centre push to perform a half outside loop, followed by 2 ½-turn spin over the centre marker.

Judging Notes The half loop must be an outside loop; the two and half turn spin must be flown over the centre marker. Exit upright.

05 Top Hat 3-4pt Roll Up 3/4 Roll Down Exit Upright: From upright pull up into a quarter loop to a vertical up line and perform three points of a four point roll. Pull to a horizontal line then pull to vertical down line and perform a three quarter roll. Pull a quarter loop to exit upright.

Judging Notes All rolls must be in the centre of vertical lines, the horizontal line must be straight and level, this is a turn around manoeuvre therefore the top line may be shorter than the vertical lines, and all quarter loops must have the same radius. The horizontal line is inverted.

06 Humpty Bump, Full Roll Up, Snap Roll Down: From upright fly to centre then start to pull a quarter loop into a vertical up line and perform a full roll in the centre of up line, then pull and perform a half inside loop into a vertical down line and perform a full snap roll in the centre of the down line, then pull a second quarter loop, to level upright flight.

Judging Notes Quarter and half loop should be the same radius’s, snap roll can be positive or negative. The whole manoeuvre is centred over the centre marker

07 Stall Turn, Full Roll Up, Half Roll Down, Exit Inverted: Pull vertical up line and perform a stall turn to a vertical down line then pull to recover upright.

Judging Notes Vertical up and down lines, not vertical, apply the one point per 15 degree rule. Stall turn more than two wingspans, zero points.

08 Inverted to Inverted Knife edge Flight: From inverted perform a quarter roll left or right into knife edge then perform a second quarter roll to exit inverted.

Judging Notes The knife edge flight should be long enough to show controlled flight path, exit must be inverted.

09 Half Outside Loop, Full Roll On Exit: From inverted push to perform a half outside loop, then fly a short level, then perform a full roll.

0 1

Judging Notes The radius of the outside loop must be constant, long line lengths must be downgraded by 2-4points the full roll must not exceed the centre marker if so downgrade by a further 2 points.

10 Horizontal Eight with Half Rolls From The Top: Push to complete 3/4 of an outside loop, perform a half roll, integrated with the last 1/8 quadrant of the first loop and the first 1/8 quadrant of the second loop of the following loop, then push to compete a full outside loop directly behind the first outside loop, perform a half roll, integrated with the last 1/8 quadrant of the second loop and the second 1/8 quadrant of the following part loop, and push to recover up right.

Judging Notes: The two outside loops are round, with the half rolls integrated with in the correct portions of the loop.

11 Split S: From level flight per form half an aileron roll, then immediately pull into a half loop.

Judging Notes:There is no hesitation between the half roll and half loop, any line shown one point per 15 degrees. The half loop not round, or has straight lines, one or more points downgrade.

12 Slow Roll: On the horizontal line perform a slow roll; the roll duration should be three to four seconds to demonstrate controlled flight.

Judging Notes:The roll rate is not constant, one or more points downgrade depending on severity. The model dives or climbs drifts in or out; apply the one point per 15-degree rule. The slow roll not long enough to demonstrate controlled flight, two to four downgrade.

13 Pull push pull Humpty Bump 1/2 Roll Up: Pull into a vertical up line and perform a half aileron roll, then push into a half outside loop followed by a vertical down line Pull to level flight

Judging Notes:The half loop must be inside, if the half roll is on the down line, the manoeuvre is zeroed. No options with this manoeuvre.

14 Triangle Loop With Half Rolls In 45 Degree Lines: From upright pull through 135 degrees into a 45 degree up line and perform a half roll, then push through 90 degrees to a 45 degree down line perform a second half roll, then pull through a second 135 degrees to level flight.

Judging Notes:All part loops radius’s must be equal, line lengths before and after half rolls must be equal.

15 Half Square Loop 1/2 Roll Up: From upright, pull to a vertical up line, perform a half roll, and then push to exit up right.

16 Cobra with 2-4pt RollsFrom upright push to a 45-degree down line and perform two of a four point roll, then push through 90-degrees to a 45-degree up line, and perform a second two of a four point roll, then push to exit upright.

Judges notes; All part loops radius’s must be equal, line lengths before and after half rolls must be equal.

17 Half Outside Loop Half Roll On Exit: From upright push into a half outside loop, then immediately perform a half roll.

Judging Notes:There is no straight line after the half roll; 2 - 4 point downgrades if straight is visible.

18 Loop with Full Roll on top Integrated: From upright complete an inside loop, with a fully-integrated full roll.

Judging Notes:The full roll is not fully integrated on the circular flight path over the top 90 degrees of the loop. Loop not round, changing roll rate, roll not in top 90 degree of loop.

19 LandingThe landing sequence should be flown with the same precision as all other manoeuvres in the schedule. On completion of the last manoeuvre a short straight and level flight should be flown. At reduced power the model turns180 degrees into a level or descendingdownwind leg and then executes a second 180 degree turn upwind for the final descending approach to the runway, touching down inside the landing zone.

Landing is complete after the model has rolled 10 metres or has come to rest inside the landing zone.

The landing zone is an area described by a circle of 50 metres radius or lines across a standard runway spaced 100 metres apart where the runway is 10 metres wide.

Possible downgrades1. Model does not follow landing sequence: zero points.2. Landing gear retracts or wheels come off on landing, zero points.3. Model lands outside the zone: zero points.4. 180 degree turns not 180 degrees 1-2 points.5. Wings not level in downwind and upwind legs 1 point per 15 degrees.6. Model does not track on runway after touchdown 1-2 points.7. Model bounces on touchdown 1-2 points.8. Model climbs and dives on downwind leg or final approach to runway 1-2 points.9. Model changes heading left or right on approach to runway 1-2 points.

The landing will not be downgraded if:1. If the pilot elects sideslip to land due to crosswind conditions in which case the upwind wing will be low.2. Wing dips due to cross wind turbulence and is corrected IMMEDIATELY.

Take offs & Landings are scored 0-10 with a K factor of 2 using the downgrades stated above, this is as the members of the GBRCAA VOTED AT THE AGM.
