City discusses need for betterinternet connection
At a work session on Nov. 17, the Marshall CityCouncil met with local leaders and internetconsultants to discuss the need for upgradinginternet services and connections in Marshall. Two local self-employed consultants, JamesDimmer and David Cook, shared their expertisewith the council on what would need to be doneto make better internet connections possible.“Marshall is at a disadvantage for data speedsdue to sources for data connectivity,” the menwrote in a formal communication to the council.“Building a municipal fiber ring can overcome thesingle source issue. Fiber must be built properlyto support any carrier wishing to deliver productsor services to business and residents.” See story on page 11
New Marshall Alternative HighSchool Director Ben Wallace
Ben Wallace, the new director of the MarshallAlternative High School, is no stranger to workingwith at-risk youth. Prior to coming to MAHS, hewas deputy director at Michigan Youth ChallengeAcademy for the past seven years. He has alsoworked at the Calhoun County Juvenile Home.Wallace says that the transition to his newposition has been fairly smooth. “Marshall PublicSchools provides the academic component forthe academy, so I have worked closely withthem,” said Wallace, who added that he waslooking for something new and different. “This iskind of new and different, but it’s along the samelines of what I was doing before. The opportunitycame along and it was a good fit.”See story on page 44

National Park Services volunteers share stories
Some of us like winter in Michigan and embraceit; some of us don’t like winter and endure it; andsome of us have the option to pick up and roll southto warmer weather and put northern tier winter asfar out of mind as possible. For 18 years, localresidents Clair and Betty Peters have picked thelatter but have done so with a flair as National ParkService volunteers.See story on page 47

Harper Creek won in straight sets 25-14,25-11 and 25-11. "I was disappointed at how our season finished,” said coach John Miller. “We knew coming in that we were going to have to play almost perfect to beatHarper and statistically, it was our worst match of the year.
