Editor’s CornerLast week's Word on the Street this

week asks people about their New Year’sresolutions.

Two years ago I wrote that I stoppedmaking them a few years back becausethe only things that making resolutionsdid was make me feel like an abject failure.

Some of my past failed resolutions included: losing 30pounds; reading one book per month; not drinking pop; keepinga journal; making my bed every day; not watching TV.

Usually, the resolutions were broken well before January wasover.

I had read that most resolutions center around ways to lookgood and be more productive, but very few people write out res-olutions that might bring them pure happiness.

Pure happiness instead of seeking out personal flaws to (not)improve?

Sounds exotic, but why not? After all, a new year should be focused on a new beginning. The author of the piece I read urged people to go out and

have fun and complete their own list of weird pursuits and un-usual changes.

So, I listed 10 weird or mostly fun resolutions a couple yearsago and this is how I did:

1. Learn to play the harmonica. I went out and bought a har-monica only to lose it a few weeks later. Determined (to appar-ently lose another one) I bought a new harmonica in March onlyto have that one go MIA in April. So, not only did I not learn toplay the harmonica, I failed to even try and play the harmonica.

2. Start and finish one book. At the start of last year, I was onpage 220 of Atlas Shrugged. I ended 2012 on page 782 and amnow on 1000. That’s an achievement in my book. I only haveabout 250 pages to go, which means I should finish the booksometime in the fall. Not too shabby.

3. Sing Karaoke. Nope. My top choices for songs were In TheGhetto, Devil Woman and Danke Shoen.

So far, 0 for 3.4. Keep track of howmany times I sneeze. Through March, I

had sneezed 226 times. And then I stopped keeping track.5.Break an unusual world record. I didn’t even attempt any

type of world record.Zero for five. But it gets slightly better.6.See a movie at the theater and not have popcorn. I wrote

that that was probably my toughest test on this list, but remark-ably, I succeeded on this resolution. I also succeeded on number

7. See a movie at the theater and not talk to the person next tome. Granted, the person next to me was a complete stranger andslept through most of the movie, but a win’s a win.

8. Laugh as much as possible, especially at myself. Probablythe easiest to do on this list, I did make a concerted effort tolaugh as much as possible.

9. Sing Nessun Dorma at a recital. No recital, but I didscream it in my car and recorded it. If anyone would like a copy,I’ll be happy to provide one.

10. Use only cash for a week and ditch the plastic. Does do-ing it for a weekend count? Does it still count even though I wasforced to ditch the plastic because I couldn’t find my wallet forthree days?

So, by my count, I got three and a half out of 10 or 35 per-cent. Looks like there’s room for improvement. But with a newyear, hope springs eternal. As it is sung in The ImpossibleDream: This is my quest, to follow that star...No matter howhopeless, no matter how far...

So, I strive on to live each day to the fullest, and enjoy this lifeI have been given. That is ny New Year’s Resolution for 2014.

Until next week, may the good news be yours.

Resolutions, big plans and high hopes often come with ringing in the new year. The ad-visor&chronicle asked these seven people what they are looking forward tomost in 2014.

"I’m looking forward to time withmy family and my kids and the activi-ties I get to enjoy with them.”

A season of giving: paying it forward is an awesome feelingTo the Editor:I’m writing this letter be-

cause of the season that weare in and to also state howblessed my life has beenthis Christmas season. Myfamily has gone through atough time this year withme not able to work.

Going from two incomesto just one has been a majorchallenge. We were wonder-ing how we were going tokeep our house, feed ourfamily and how Christmaswas going to go. I know that

the true meaning of Christ-mas isn’t how many pre-sents are under the tree formy daughter, but she is onlygoing to be a kid once. Iwanted her to have somegoodies to open for Christ-mas.

As the season camearound, my wife and Ilooked at each other andwondered how are we goingto do this? We cut cornersand made it possible so weat least knew we could gether a couple of things.

Little did I know howblessed we were going to bewith family and friendsreaching out from all overthe country to help howeverthey could. Christmas wasbeyond taken care of be-cause of the generosity ofothers.

I remember what mychild’s 3rd grade teachersaid to me, “Pay it forward,“I thought to myself, “She’sright.” My wife and I de-cided to give our neighbor afew presents for his child

and other goodies knowingthat he wasn’t going to havevery much. It felt so amaz-ing to be able to help othersin need after being soblessed ourselves.

Pay it forward myfriends. It’s an awesomefeeling. Thank you, God forblessing me with great fam-ily and friends.

All this cost for what? How about an ATV/dirt bike park?To the Editor:How about an ATV /dirt bike park

for this area? In reference to a recentarticle in the Battle Creek Enquirer,“ATV park breathes new life into oldKy. Mine,“ it sure would be great tohave a place to ride in this area.

How about the land along I-94 eastof Marshall or the land on Divisionnear the compost center?

This would be a great time for ourso-called leaders to act like leaders fora change - federal, state, city andtownship. Step up to the plate.

Note: When I paid my property taxbill this month, I said to myself, “Allthis cost for what?”
