Editor’s CornerI was surprised by how many people

askedme howmyBestMan speechwentlast week, so I decided to share it witheveryone as well as let it serve as a tem-plate in case anyone out there has a simi-lar speech to make at an upcoming wed-ding.

What follows is not my original speech. This one was writtenat 7 a.m. themorning of thewedding, which tookplace at 10 a.m.in Joplin, Mo. as my friend and his now wife volunteered theirtime on the weekends over the past year helping out residents af-fected by the devastating tornado that struck onMay 22, 2011.

Here now is the greatest Best Man speech ever:Good morning,I had the privilege of being the groom’s best man as my dear

friend todaybecame the luckiest man on the face of the earth bymarrying his lovelybride. She looks absolutely stunning, would-n’t you agree?

Well, what can I tell you about the groom? He’s handsome, intelligent, witty, charismatic…oops.Sorry…wrong wedding. (Lots of laughter)Just kidding.I’ve known Steve for over 20 years, and believe me, those ad-

jectives are just the tip of the iceberg in describing him, all goodthings I assure you.

I met Steve when we were both in the radio business inWash-ington,D.C. in 1991 andbecause ofour mutual interest in sports, broadcasting and politics, a close friendship formed.

Even though our lives took us to other parts of the country, and in my case, out of the country to Italy for three years, westayed in touch, having frequent and lengthy and expensive, phone conversations thatwould regularlyrun three to four hours, usuallywhile we were watching the same sporting event on TV.

Steve became the older brother I never had, and I sought himout regularly for some brotherly advice when I needed it.

Besides sports, broadcasting and politics, we talked aboutsomethingmore important - life. Andmost recently love, namely, how Sara came into his life and touched his heart in ways henever could have imagined.

I met Sara for the very first time last evening (the night beforethe wedding), and it didn’t take me very long to see howperfectthey are for each other. The love, kindness and respect for eachother is genuine and apparent instantly, even when seeing themtogether for the very first time.

While Steve was speaking at dinner last night, I took a photoof him, but when looking at the photo later, it was the look onSara’s face that caught my attention.

Theysaya picture is worth a thousandwords, but in this case, the look on Sarah’s face said only one word: Love.

Aman hasn’t fully lived until he has a woman lookat him thewaySara looked at Steve last night, or thismorning for that mat-ter. (Lots of tears)

In closing, two things, first a quote byMother Teresa that I feelis most appropriate in describing the bride and groom:

Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and hap-pier. Be the living expression ofGod’s kindness, kindness in yourface, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.

And lastly, my personal wish to Steve and Sara – May thegood news be yours... Always. Not too bad if I say so myself.Until next week, may the good news be yours.

As the nation honors its fallen heroes on Memorial Day (May 28), we askedthese six people what the holiday means to them.

Why hold honors ceremony in high school gym?To the Editor:Looking through the May 12 ad-vi-

sor&chronicle, I came upon the article“2012 Honors Night.” It is always agood thing to honor students for theiracademic and athletic achievements.

I am just wondering if you are hon-oring someone, isn’t there usuallysome “pomp” or “flair,” showing of

high regard? If so, why would youhold an Honors Ceremony in a highschool gym when the school systemhas a brand new auditorium at Mar-shall Middle School?

Yes, you are in the process of build-ing a new high school auditorium withcomfortable seating, good sound sys-tem and lighting, which it is made for,

rather than a noisy gym with an un-comfortable bleachers. How is that re-ally honoring the students and theirparents?

Kim Schlehuber,Olivet

Moving toward a 50-50 division of Medicaid, HCBSTo the Editor:The numbers:$80,300: median annual

2011 Michigan cost forsemi-private room in nurs-ing home.

$29,453: median annual2011 Michigan cost for 30hours a week of home andcommunity-based services(HCBS) at home by li-censed caregivers.

In April 2011, Michi-gan’s Department of Com-munity Health reported7,900 people were waitingfor permission to useHCBS.

Yet Michigan records

show that 90 percent ofthem could have occupiedempty nursing-home beds.

Why didn’t they? A 2005AARP survey of Michiganvoters age 45 and overshowed that approximately80 percent of them wantedHCBS as long as possible.

Using HCBS not only in-creases patient and familysatisfaction. It saves moneyfor whoever pays—family,Medicare, or Medicaid(which uses about $19 ofevery $100 our state col-lects in general taxes).

We can both save moneyand increase satisfaction by

moving toward a 50-50 di-vision of Medicaid long-term dollars between nurs-ing homes and HCBS in-stead of the present alloca-tion, which significantly fa-vors costly nursing homes.

We can save even moremoney (by lowering Michi-gan’s required Medicaid-match) through enteringMedicaid’s State BalancingIncentive Payment Pro-gram. This means establish-ing a single statewide set ofrules and procedures for (1)deciding what servicessomeone needs; (2) match-ing patients and providers;

and (3) monitoring both pa-tients and providers tomake sure the services arenot only properly provided, but are modified appropri-ately if changes becomeneeded.

Please contact State Sen-ator Mike Nofs and yourstate representative (JaseBolger or Kate Segal) tourge that Michigan applypromptly for the State Bal-ancing Incentive PaymentProgram.

Lose all three games for second straight yearCoach Adrian Harkey says team has positive attitude heading to districts despite loss of Katie Slaght

By JOHN HENDLERNews Editor

Could history be repeat-ing itself?

Last year, the MarshallHigh School girls varsitysoccer team lost all threegames of the SMAC tour-nament before capturingthe district title for only thesecond time in school his-tory.

On Wednesday, Marshalllost its third straight in theSMAC tournament, 3-0 de-feat at home versus LoyNorrix. That came two daysafter Marshall was shutoutby Lakeview 2-0.

Just before halftime ofthe Lakeview game, Mar-shall senior and captainKatie Slaght went downwith what turned out to be atorn ACL and will misswhat’s left of the season.

“The loss of Katie Slaghtwill hurt tremendously butwe are still a very good soc-cer team and everyone justneeds to step up theirgame,” said coach AdrianHarkey. “We are playingvery good soccer but arealso having trouble scoring. In the last three losses wehave had many opportuni-ties, but just cant seem to beable to finish. I wouldn'tsay I am happy with the lastthree games but I am defi-nitely not discouraged. “

After allowing sevengoals in their first 14games, Marshall has sur-rendered nine in the pastfive games.

Still, despite the recentsetbacks, Marshall Harkeyfeels his team has a goodshot making a post seasonrun similar to last year.

“We still have a verypositive attitude going intodistricts as we all feel wehave a great chance of win-ning it,” he said.

Marshall opens districtplay at home on Tuesday,May 29 at 6 p.m.
