Dear Parish Family,

Are you ready for Christmas? It’s a question we are often asked. But I ask: how can we as Catholics really be ready for Christmas? How can we keep the season of holiness in our hearts as we “wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ”?

First, I invite you to take some extra time in prayer. Even if it is just a few extra minutes a day, take that time to reflect on the Nativity of our Lord, God’s gift to us as a promise of salvation. I encourage you also to celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation, which brings with it grace and peace. And finally, I urge us all to share our hope with friends and family, inviting them to celebrate Mass with us. In this way, we can truly be ready for Christmas.

May the Peace of Christ be with you this Christmas, and throughout the year.

Dear Parish Family,

Advent and Christmas is a time of joy for Catholics. The Nativity of our Lord is a mystery we could spend our whole lives pondering, but we focus on it especially at this time of year. By coming to us in flesh, Christ brings dignity to our humanity. His life, death, and resurrection bring meaning to our lives and provide for our salvation. In knowing that Christ was born for us, we are filled with great joy.

While we marvel at this outpouring of love and mercy from God the Father, we are naturally inclined to consider those who don’t know about His love. Those on the margins. Those who are struggling in mind and body. And so many more who need our prayers.

In a special way I pray that our parish will share the love and mercy of God with those around us, our families, and our communities.

INSPIRATION FOR THE SEASON

Saint Andrew the ApostleNovember 30Saint Andrew was one of the Twelve Apostles of the Lord. He was the brother of Saint Peter, the chief apostle. The brothers were from a prominent fishing family in the port city of Capernaum in the region of Galilee. Andrew was an early disciple of Saint John the Baptist, who told him to follow Jesus. Being from a comfortable family, it was probably very difficult for Andrew to surrender his life of relative ease. And yet he left that world and joined the band of disciples who were following Jesus, where he frequently learned to die to himself and to wait for the Lord. Through such waiting, Andrew was taught deeper patience and broader hospitality. This Advent season, we ask Saint Andrew to pray for us as we seek these same virtues in our lives.

FAMILY FOCUSThe season of Advent consists of preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ through four Sundays. Each Sunday is celebrated by the lighting of a candle along the Advent wreath. It’s a noble practice to have such a wreath in the Christian home, and to mark the lighting of the new candle with some devotional practices.

On the First Sunday of Advent, we light a violet candle. It matches the color of the priest’s and deacon’s vestments, as well as any coverings on the altar or ambo in our parish churches. The color violet represents repentance and preparation. As we light our first candle, let’s think of the following:• What sins do I want to fight and remove from my life?• What people or situations need greater patience from me? • How can I be more generous and kinder in my hospitality to others?

“Be watchful! Be alert!” — Mark 13:33

The Old and the New: In today’s Mass readings, we can see the dynam-ics between the Old Testament and the New Testament. The two comprise a single plan of salvation. In this Sunday’s readings, the prophet Isaiah expresses the hunger of the Hebrew heart for sal-vation and the coming of the Messiah. He exclaims, “Return for the sake of your servants”! In the Gospel reading, Jesus fulfills this prophecy. He comes as Lord and Savior. After completing his work of redemption, Jesus calls us to wait for his second coming. He tells us to “Be watchful! Be alert!” since we will not know the day or hour when he will return.

Our Response: From our Old Testa-ment and Gospel readings, we can discern many themes and messages, but the principal lesson is clear: We must wait. The entire season of Advent is given to us by the Church as a help in forming our hearts to wait. Today, Saint Paul affirms a waiting spirit in his First Letter to the Corinthians, even thank-ing God for the grace within us so that we “are not lacking in any spiritual gift” as we wait. But as we wait, what partic-ular virtues could we nurture? Among the many possible virtues that waiting can produce, the two spiritual gifts that most stand out are patience and hos-pitality. We can learn to have the calm spirit of patience in our own hearts, as well as the tender care of hospitality to others who are waiting and in need.
