FROM THE CHAIR . . .
‘Baptism by fire’! The only way to describe taking over the
helm of Gauteng East Seniors Tennis in December 2013
with a major tournament to organise in 3 weeks and the
festive season shutdown! This said, we hosted players from
around the country in our annual GE Seniors Tournament
which proved to be one of the top tournaments on the
2014 TSA calendar.
Firstly, a big thank-you to outgoing chairman Erika Bornman
and her committee for their hard work and efforts in ensuring
we as a province had a presence at all the national and
provincial tournaments. We wish Erika much success as she
and her family embark on a new adventure in Belgium.
Administration of the sport is never easy and seldom
appreciated and whilst we may have been under the radar
for the best part of the year I assure you we have been busy
getting our house in order on both the admin and financial
platforms. A process which is ongoing, but we are making
great strides and assure you that we will get GE Seniors
Tennis back on track and become the benchmark for all
provinces into the future. To this end I am fully committed as
are the management team who bring years of knowledge
and experience at both club and national level.
We have been and continue to work closely with both Tennis
SA and GETA in all our future plans and thank them for their
input and advice throughout the year.
As you will see GETA have re-branded and we now have a
logo that reflects our rich past but embraces an ever richer
future. We hope it is embraced and restores provincial pride
in our members. This will be backed up by our new
marketing campaign.
We are aggressively sourcing funding and sponsorship on a
variety of levels to assist with our future plans within the
province and have also had to implement an annual seniors
fee. This R150 fee is charged by all other provinces in South
Africa and was initially charged by SAVTA and paid to the
respective provinces but when SAVTA was merged into TSA
it became the provinces responsibility to charge and collect
the fees. For some reason Gauteng East have never did this
and I am afraid that I have the onerous task to re-introduce
this but remind members they have had eight years of ‘fee
free’ tennis.
2
This fee is the only income we as GE Seniors earn and as
you are all aware our costs far out-weigh the expenses we
incur with all various tournaments. Please note that this fee
is separate to the provincial GETA and TSA fees and will be
paid direct to GE Seniors.
On a positive note we had much to be proud of during 2014.
Our Seniors Tournament in January saw 222 entrants and
2015 saw a substantial increase in entries an we are well on
our way to reaching record numbers.
Inter-Provincial representation was fair but hope to increase
teams moving forward. We are thrilled that as a province we
are hosting the 30-45+ Inter-Pro on home turf in 2015, the
first time we as a province have done so in over 10 years.
We host the 50-60 age group in 2017 and will continue to
submit bids to host more in addition to attracting other
tournaments to utilise GE as a tournament destination .
GE Club Leagues were disappointing and we are busy
reworking this and find incentives for all clubs to get
involved. It is one of the few arenas where we as members
get a chance to play and socialise with each other within the
province and needs to be encouraged. We are also looking
at re-introducing the GE Seniors Closed tournament in 2015
and creating other platforms for social tennis amongst our
members.
I will be meeting with club committees in the next few
months to discuss our plans and get their feedback , input
and ideas.
I wish you all a belated Happy New Year and success both
on and off the courts during 2015.
Owen O’Neill
Chairman: Gauteng East Seniors Tennis

GETA GETS A FACELIFT . . .
It was raised by members at the GETA AGM held in May
that the majority of members would like to revert back to the
traditional Gauteng Rose Emblem. This was agreed by the
committee and designs were submitted for approval.
We are thrilled to unveil our new logo which encompasses
the past and future by paying homage to the red rose utilised
in the past but looking forward to the future with an added
shield graphic. The logo is classic, clean, bold and modern
and will stand the testament of time. Corporate colours of
Navy and grey allow the red of the rose to pop. It is classic
enough to appeal to our older members but fresh and
dynamic enough to appeal to the young.
In addition to the new logo we have also created a tagline
that simply embodies the message of the association and
benefits to our members using a play of the tennis scoring
system -- ‘Get the Advantage’, which is short, sharp and
memorable and embodies our mandate of giving you our
members just that!
The main logo can be adapted for all divisions like Seniors
and Juniors in addition to variants embracing the ‘Team GE”
concept we want to drive amongst the members.
We are currently building our own website that will be broken
into the various divisions and have all the latest news, tour-
naments and events coming up with direct links to relevant
affiliated bodies.
Every resource you will need in one website including:
Latest News
Tournament Calendar
Tournament Entry List
Tournament Schedules
Inter-Provincial Teams & News
League News, Results & Schedules
Gallery & Video Section
Clubs in the Province.
This identity will be utilised throughout all marketing,
branding and merchandising and create a strong and time-
less brand that stands out from the crowd.
Corporate Identity Package will be sent to all clubs and
members in due course along with new team wear and
accessories catalogue once these have been finalised.
May I urge all clubs in the province to send me their
information for inclusion in the website:

‘ TEAM GE SENIORS’ FOR SA
Senior Membership Fees
Gauteng East Seniors Tennis golden girl Kathy Nevay from
Northmead Tennis Club in Benoni was selected to represent the
country for Tennis SA in the Super Seniors World Team
Championships being held in Turkey in October 2014, competing
against the world’s top senior players in the 75+ Queens Cup.
Kathy is a true testament that “tennis is a sport for a lifetime” and
continues to be a source of inspiration to many players of all
generations.
Nico Viviers from Sunward Park Tennis Club was selected to repre-
sent South Africa in the Men’s 45+ age group in the upcoming
World Championships being held in Turkey in March 2015. We wish
Nico all the success and hope the experience is both rewarding on
and off the courts for him. We are indeed justifiably proud of both
your achievements and may 2015 bring more recognition to our
provincial players. 4 4
Team GE at Inter Provincial Tournaments 2014
With the re-branding of Gauteng East Tennis Association we also decided
to use the opportunity to update our provincial team wear and create a
new range of sportswear for both our senior and junior provincial players.
In addition we created a ‘Team GE’ which is available to all members. The
range is designed to mix and match yet still create a strong visual GE
identity.
The range is clean, modern and embraces the elements of the new logo.
The range will be added too and will include full provincial sportswear
range, casual wear and accessories. This will be available to order and
pay online once our website is complete. However in the interim it can be
ordered via Owen O’Neill.
For current range and pricing please contact us at

60 - 75+ Age Group 30+ A Cup Men’s 30+ 40+ B Cup
Generally it is felt that the Inter-Provincial tournament format
needs to be reworked as we are still struggling to attract our
top players and get a decent amount of teams represented.
This problem is not unique to our province as most provinces
seem to face similar problems. These issues will be raised at
the National level at the Seniors Workshop towards the end
of the year.
It is our intention to restore pride in repre-
senting our province and put our best teams
forward. It seems a vast majority of players
have been disillusioned by previous
tournaments and also struggle to raise
teams due to a shortage of ladies, we urge
all clubs to get both their ladies and gents
involved. We are committed to get this right
and to support our players.
60 - 75+ Age Group: Pretoria April 2014
Having initially had 3 teams we ended up with only 1 due to
injuries and withdrawals. Congratulations to our 70 A Cup
team of George Rough (C), Henk Fehling, Kathy Nevay &
Luiza Tsakos who narrowly lost the age group to take second
place. An improvement from third in the previous year. Most
other players who had been selected were in the end able to
play albeit for other provinces.
50 - 55+ Age Group: George May 2014
We were unable to raise a single team.
30 - 45+ Age Group: East London June 2014
Gauteng East Seniors Tennis improved their standing
again at the Inter-Provincial Tennis Tournament held in
East London at the end of June. The 30+ A Cup Mixed
team of Roberto Vaglietti (Captain), Friedrich Brandt, Grae-
me Twidale, Marie Reid, Jean Varges and Alida Meyer im-
proved their standings from 4th place in last year’s B Cup
to a fourth in this years A Cup, an awe-
some achievement.
The pairing of Edward Matthews (Captain)
and James Grcic in the Men’s 30+ draw
saw them clinching a closely fought 4th
place, impressive outing for their first Inter-
Pro tournament.
Captain Robin Baloyi and his 40+ B Cup
team with Jannie Geldenhuys, Johan van
Rooyen, Nomvula Baloyi, Wendy Crowther and Karen Du
Plessis should be commended for their 5th place spot after
entering the tournament with a point penalty against them.
They fought all the way and proved their metal to achieve
this result; we can only hope to see them improve next
year on home turf.
Gauteng East Seniors will host the 30 - 45+ Inter-Pro
tournament in October 2015 and look forward to a
record number of GE Teams and welcoming players
from around the country to our province for a week of
tennis competition, socializing and plain home-grown
hospitality all in the spirit of sportsmanship.

GE Seniors Tournaments 2015 - a kinda magic!
7
Gauteng East Seniors hosted players from around the
country in their annual Seniors Tournament in January
2015. The tournament held over five days and saw an
increase in entries that surpassed previous years with
ages ranging from 30 to 75+ in singles, doubles and
mixed play.
The tournament saw over 255
player’s battle it out for much sought
after national ranking points and
glory at what is fast becoming the
top tournament in the country. The
tournament was held at two venues,
GETA Benoni Tennis Centre and
Parkrand Tennis Complex in
Boksburg.
From the outset Gauteng East
players raised their game and
caused more than a few upsets.
Notable performances came from
Kathy Nevay who lifted the Ladies
70+ singles title and runner up in the
ladies doubles solidifying her
Number One ranking in the country,
whilst George Rough placing sixth in both the Men’s
Singles and doubles 70+.
Elsabie Ferreira won the ladies 65+ crown and was
runner up in the ladies doubles whilst Peter Carter won
the Men’s Singles and Doubles with Elmo Ferreira.
Joe & Beverley Solomons placed fourth in the Mixed
Doubles 55+ and newcomer Elize Preuyt left an
impression in the ladies singles 55+ with a solid third
place losing to the countries number one and two seeds.
In the 50 age group Marlene Brighton and Karin
Steenkamp came fifth and sixth respectively whilst in the
Men’s Fausto Pietrobon came third and Mark Vos made
the Men’s Doubles final with partner Johnathan Lowings
and were ahead by a set when play was stopped due to
rain. Hendrika Botha and Marina
Steyn took third place in the 45+
Ladies Doubles whilst Willie and
Allison Liechterkost won the 40+
Mixed Doubles.
Men’s singles 40+ saw Kobri Du
Preez take out the number one
seed and lose to the number two
seed to take second whilst he
with partner Theo Blaauw won
the Men’s Doubles.
The 30+ Men’s saw Team GE
really make a mark with both
Kevin Taylor and Roberto
Vaglietti squaring up against
each other in the final which was
again un-played due to rain and
a notable fourth place by
Jeronimo De Faria-Lopes who again reached the semi-
final round with partner Edward Matthews in the Men’s
Doubles.
These results bode well for the province, who are hosting
the Inter-Provincial Tennis Tournament for the 30-45+
age groups in October this year. This year and is the first
time they have done so and is a great opportunity for us
as a province to showcase our facilities, hospitality and
provincial pride to our visitors from around the country.

The GE Seniors membership Fee of R150 will be re-introduced from
January 2015. This fee should have been charged annually to league,
tournament and inter-provincial players, however when SAVTA was
incorporated into TSA in 2008 it became the provinces responsibility to
collect the fees.
GE Seniors administrators at the time never initiated this and
subsequent committees never collected the fees either.
It falls on my shoulders to initiate this fee again, however the good news
is that we obviously cannot backdate these fees for the last 8 years, but
from 2015 all senior members will be expected to pay this fee.
Non-compliance will result in blocking of players into any league,
all tournaments and selection as an Inter Provincial players.
This fee is the only income we as a governing body receive to fulfil our
administration duties and run the various tournaments and Inter-Pro
costs that we incur. The TSA Fees and the GETA Affiliation Fees are
separate fees to those governing bodies of which we receive no part.
The onus is on the clubs to ensure that their members comply and that
any seniors players (from 30 years and upwards) comply to avoid future
embarrassment.
The annual Seniors Fee of R150 can be made into the GE Seniors
account:
Bank: ABSA
Acct Name: GE Seniors
Acct #: 9290781023
Branch: Dunswart
Please reference your Name and club when making payment. If clubs
are making a bulk payment on behalf of their members please supply a
members list with proof of payment.
We appreciate all club administrators’ co-operation in this regard and
please advise your members who play league and tournaments
accordingly.
The blocking of players from tournaments and league participation will
come into effect from May 2015. Any members who wish to pay their
fees later in the year please advise us and we will make suitable
arrangements.

Champion of Champions
Winter League Results 2014
GETA organised the winter league, club entries were disappointing
(results on the column to the right). We still have a lot of clubs unwilling
to participate or playing in other leagues out of their provincial borders.
Clubs in general are keen to participate but have been put off by bad
administration and lack of rule enforcement which resulted in our
Summer League being cancelled due lack of entries.
GE Seniors are putting a league proposal together and will then present
to GETA. As league is one of the few areas where clubs can interact
both sporting and socially we want to see this format work. A strong
league is a basis for developing those social players and encouraging
them to join the tournament circuit, which ultimately benefits us as we
have a larger pool of players when it comes to provincial selection.
If any clubs have suggestions and/or input for the league moving
forward please make contact with me as we want to make it as inclusive
for all.
In addition we are sourcing sponsorship to try and find incentives for the
clubs to participate and will advise if and when we secure.

Gauteng Tennis Association which governs Gauteng North, East and
Central are currently finalising a tournament for all club champions to
participate. The initial rounds will be played within the province and the
quarter finalists would then go on to compete against other provincial
finalists to decide the Champion of Champions titles.
It is acknowledged that some clubs are stronger than others and
allowances will be made for a strength versus strength draw.
Prize money will be on offer as will benefits for the clubs, the will be
announced upon finalisation of the event by GTA.
In addition a Premier Open Tournament is proposed which will be open
to all players and will be known as the ‘Gauteng Cup’. Again early
rounds will be played in the 3 regions with quarter finalists coming
together to decide the winner. Prize money and club incentives will be on
offer.
Both these proposed tournaments have the full backing of Tennis SA
and we urge both club and players support in the quest to make our
Province the leading Tennis force in the country and make tennis the
vibrant sport it was 20 years ago, when it was the 3rd most popular sport
in the country.
We will advise of final information as soon as we have it and again
request all clubs full support for these initiatives and for growing the
game and sport.

Farewell Round Robin Tournament
Henk Fehling a veteran of Gauteng East Tennis Association is relocating to PE. As a farewell a Round Robin Tournament and luncheon was organised by Johan Du Plooy. It was a fun morning of tennis and comraderie and a fitting tribute to Henk from fellow team mates and players from across Gauteng, Henk has represented our province in Inter Provincial Tournaments for many years. Hopefully we will see him in tournaments around the country.
