Dear fellow Austrians,

Dear friends of Austria,

Today I would like to take this opportunity to speak out not in my official functions but as Christian H.

Schierer, a simple and humble Austrian citizen having the chance to be based here in Hong Kong: "In these difficult times we all need to show a human approach and leadership. I would like to suggest not only to dedicate this year's Austrian National Day - celebrated in over 100 countries and so well organised by our colleagues at the Austrian Foreign Ministry - to the refugees finding some peace and security in Austria and other parts of Europe. I additionally suggest, and I believe you and my fellow Austrians here in Hong Kong would agree and back this move - to hold a slightly more humble National Day celebration and to donate surplus sponsor money to NGOs helping refugees in Austria.” On the dedicated Facebook-Page

here this initiative was within hours supported by a great number of people including the State Secretary Dr

Harald Mahrer, the Chairman of the Austrian Diplomatic Academy, Dr Hans Winkler, journalists, lawyers,

etc.

As we want to cater more for the strong Start-up community and younger entrepreneurs coming to Hong

Kong or considering Hong Kong as a foothole for their international ventures, we launched only a short

while ago an additional Video Industry Service on Youtube. Within a few hours we counted some 1,500 hits

and hope you too will enjoy these short movies. Especially, two videos seem to have quite an impact. But we

leave it up to you to decide. Find the videos here.

Currently our teams are working very hard to prepare the 2nd Sino-Austrian Investor Conference taking

place on October 20th here in Hong Kong. With highranking representatives from Hong Kong and Austria we

are convinced that this year will also become quite a landmark event for our bilateral trade and investment

relations.

Finally, please join us in our Austria Connect Conference 2016. This year we venture out to Chengdu,

Vienna: A rising Start-up Hub A lot of cities claim to be well situated, but little can compete with Vienna.

The location is one of the fundamental reasons for the Viennese startup

scene’s growing success. Vienna is ideally connected to many European

cities and capitals. Furthermore, Vienna has an unique mix of Western and

Eastern European cultures, making the city the ideal spot to build a

company which can easily expand to the whole European continent. A

Start-up ecosystem is strong when a city or region can provide startups

easy access to the right support (financial, material and knowledge) in every step of building a company.

Vienna is an ideal city if you wish to learn how to found, grow or run a Start-up. Dozens of organisations,

profit and nonprofit, such as Austrian Startups, AWS or the Technical University offer classes to get the

right knowledge to start a company. There is almost not one single working day in Austria without an event

The Dow Jones Venture Capital Report for 1Q 2015 states that Austria rose to fourth position when it comes

to Equity Financings into Europe-based Venture capital backed Companies. Austria holds now a 7% share

of the total European Equity financing, raising EUR 173 million during Q1 2015.

Other News New Trainees at ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA HQ

On September 1st ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA welcomed 10 new highly

qualified trainees. The “new kids on the block”, 6 ladies and 4

gentlemen, which prevailed against 300 applicants will start at the HQ

in Vienna. In the upcoming 10 months they will deepen not only their

existing remarkable language skills and their knowledge about about

Austrian exports but will learn tons of new things in order to be fully

prepared for the job of a Deputy Trade Commissioner.

Refugees Welcome! On September 1st Austrians sent a strong humanitarian signal! In an

uncomparable and incredible act of humanity & solidarity, some 20,000

Austrians welcomed over 3,600 immigrants fleeing from IS and other

terrible regimes to Vienna. People brought water, food, dipers,… and

handed it out to those poor people in need. Our thoughts and prayers go

out to the several thousand immigrants, children, women and men, who

lost their lives in the Mediterranean or on other routes to Europe in hope

for a better, secure and safer life! Like our initiative here.

World Skills 2015: Austria wins 8 medals in Brazil Skilled workers from Austria are among the best in the world, as Team Austria conclusively proved at the

international skills competition, WorldSkills 2015 , held in Sao Paulo from 11th to 16th August 2015. With 8

medals (5 x Gold, 2 x Silver and 1 x Bronze) and 15 Medallions for Excellence, Austria took its place in the

world’s top ten, coming in 5th place. Austria even came first out of all participating European countries. If

Austria Connect Greater China 2015 November 19th-21st, 2015

AUSTRIA CONNECT 2015 will take place in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, under the motto of “Going West”.

The event provides an excellent communication and networking platform for all Austrians and

representatives of Austrian companies in the Greater China Region. We expect the participation of 100 to

150 Austrian CEO’s, managing directors and local representatives of Austrian companies. AUSTRIA

Education seminars at the Sheraton Hotel, Hong Kong July 18th, 2015

More than 80 students and parents attended our ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA seminar

at the Sheraton Hotel in Hong Kong which covered topics such as: The Education

system in Austria, Visa Requirements and the introduction of MODUL University

Vienna. At the end of the seminares the participants were able to ask questions to

our experts. In our common effort to further promote education exports we could

increase the number of Hong Kong students considering education in Austria by over 200%.

EUROPEAN - CHINESE HIGHER VOCATIONAL EDUCATION FORUM August 3rd – 6th, 2015

The theme for this year´s event opened by Trade Commissioner Schierer was: ”Learning from each other

for the well-being of the future”. We should enhance communication and learn from each other for the

progress and development of education and culture which play important roles in the well-being of the

people and the future of the nation. China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week, a platform aiming to create

and develop more practical and win-win educational and cultural cooperation, provides grand opportunities

InvestHK's Launch Reception of 2016 StartmeupHK Festival September 1st, 2015

Shanghai: A Wartime Haven, Hong Kong Opening August 31st, 2015

To mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Shanghai Ghetto and the end

of WWII, the Hong Kong Holocaust and Tolerance Centre (HKHTC) will stage a

public exhibition entitled “Shanghai: A Wartime Haven”. The exhibition tells the

story of Jews' escape to Shanghai from Nazi Germany, the experiences of Jews

and Chinese under Japanese internment during the war, and finally the city's

liberation and refugees' subsequent transit to Hong Kong. Shanghai: A Wartime

Haven also documents the Kadoorie family's wartime and postwar

humanitarianism, as well as the rescue activities of diplomats Ho Feng Shan from China and Japan's

Chiune Sugihara, who risked their lives to issue Jews visas out of Austria and Lithuania in the late 1930s.

Photo exhibition "Travels in No-Man's Land: 25 Years after the Fall of the Iron Curtain" September 15th - October 10th, 2015

Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Austrian Consulate General jointly present the photo

exhibition “Travels in No-Man’s Land” by Austrian photographer Kurt Kaindl at the Goethe-

Gallery. The exhibition shows black and white photos that Kaindl took along the former

“Iron Curtain”, the border between East and West from Lübeck in Germany to Triest in

Italy. A discussion on “Truth is where the border lies: Personal memories and experience

before and after the Fall of the Iron Curtain” will take place on the opening day of the

exhibition from 08:00 to 09:00 hrs in the Black Box Studio. Moderated by Vivienne Chow, the discussion will

We are hosting a Business Luncheon on September 25th, from 12:30 to 14:00 hrs at the Island Shangri-La

Hong Kong with the topic of: “Chinese Foreign Direct Investments in Europe and Austria within its new

China´s Silk Road & 16+1 strategy”. Austrian Trade Commissioner and Head of ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA

Hong Kong, Christian H. Schierer will share some insights in latest Chinese FDI investment patterns in the

Alpine Republic as well as the internationalization of the RMB. He will reflect on the impact of China´s new

vision with regard to European SMEs as well as on strategic positioning of Chinese enterprises in the CEE

Austrian book presentation with Martin Amanshauser September 26th, 2015

The Austrian Consulate in Hong Kong in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Hong Kong

will host a reading with Martin Amanshauser, author of “Falsch Reisen” and “Der Fisch in der Streichholzschachtel”, on September 26th from 17:00 to 18:00 hrs in the library of the

Goethe-Institut Hong Kong in the Hong Kong Arts Centre. With tongue and cheek and

irresistible humor, the author Martin Amanshauser makes his point about the pitfalls of

modern travelling. Nothing is excluded: from airport to cruise ship, from rental car to tent

holiday. Amanshauser, novelist, travel journalist and columnist, wields a sharp pen when it

comes to how nearly everything can go wrong on a trip: as a flight passenger, as a hotel

guest, when giving tips, travelling by backpack or even when preparing a first-aid-kit. Being a frequent

traveler around the globe he knows of all those Dos and Don’ts, the awkward moments and some

countries’ very typical customs.

InvestHK Start Up-Forum in Linz, Graz and Vienna, Austria October 1st-October 2nd, 2015

In co-operation with InvestHK, ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Hong Kong and the Austrian Federal Economic

Chamber are hosting a two day Startup Forum in Austria. The event will take place on October 1st in Graz

and Linz on October 2nd in Vienna and offers comprehensive Export-Know-How. The Forum will take place

in the course of the internationalization campaign go-international, a cooperation between the Austrian

Chamber of Commerce and the Ministery of Economics, Family and Youth - for endowing scholarships to

APAIR members. The event will cover topics such as: What are the current trends in Hong Kong? How can

The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber is presenting an international cooperation forum for Austrian

Asia Contemporary Art Show October 8th-11th, 2015

The upcoming Fall Edition of the Asia Contemporary Art Show will be held with support

ofADVANTAGE AUSTRIA from October 8th to 11th, 2015, at the 5-star Conrad Hotel in

Hong Kong. Collectors and art lovers will have the opportunity to browse and buy

original paintings, limited editions, sculptures and photographs from some of the

world’s most interesting and promising artists – from emerging and mid-career artists,

to those who have already achieved recognition in private and public collections, and at

auction. The 7th edition of the Show welcomes exhibitors from five continents – from Hong Kong, China and

most parts of Asia, to Australia, North and South America, and Europe. Artists from all over the world will

Launching Ceremony of Vienna Boys Choir Music Academy October 9th, 2015

The Boys are back ! The Vienna Boys Choir will return to Hong Kong for two

concerts in October as part of the Leisure & Cultural Services Department's Great

Music 2015 series. The choir will be led by Hong Kong-born conductor Jimmy

Chiang and will collaborate with the Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra to

perform works by Strauss, Mozart and Mendelssohn. The concerts will be held at

20:00 hrs on October 10th at City Hall, and at 15:00 hrs on October 11th at Yuen Long Theatre. For more

AustroCham Hallstatt One-Day Trip October 10th, 2015 AustroCham is planning again an One-Day Trip to visit Huizhou and its Hallstatt development. Hallstatt is a

housing development in the town Luoyang, Boluo County, in China. It is modelled after the Austrian city

Hallstatt. The center of the area contains a replica of the church, the fountain and various other objects

2nd Sino Austrian CEE Investor Conference 2015, Hong Kong October 19th – 20th, 2015

The Investor Conference organized by ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA has successfully been

Other News Macau International Fireworks Display Contest September 5th – October 1st, 2015

One of the world’s most well-known fireworks festivals will mark another year in Macau in September. The

27th Macau International Fireworks Display Contest will illuminate the waterfront next to the Macau Tower

on September 5th, 12th, 19th, 27th and October 1st, 2015. The event will feature 10 international teams

demonstrating their pyrotechnic prowess and lighting up the skies over the city with spectacular fireworks

demonstrations. One of the participating companies is the world renown FIREevent from Austria.

KTM X-BOW GT4 EUROPEAN SERIES The German Daniel Uckermann is the new champion of the AM-class of the

GT4 European Series. Thereby the new KTM X-BOW GT4, which was

developed by the Austrian company KTM in cooperation with Reiter

Engineering, wins already in his debut season the first international titel.

Daniel was overjoyed, because he was able to win at his home country

Germany.

New Austrian Pastor in Beijing, China Mr Franz Herz, born in Vienna, is the new pastor in Beijing. After studying theology in Vienna and in Paris

he has been sanctified by cardinal König in 1988. Subsequently he has dedicated the following 10 years to

working with young adults. For the last 14 years Mr Herz has guided the parish “St. Anton” in the 10th

district of Vienna. In Beijing he will be working as a school teacher in the German school in Beijing.For any

RED-WHITE-RED CARD ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA is one of the initating organisation of the “Red-White-Red Card” system. Interested

persons from Hong Kong, Macao and China can immediately ascertain if

and under which conditions they are eligible for immigration based on

objective criteria. The points system is based on the following criteria:

The “Red-White-Red Card” is issued for 12 months and allows employment with the employer for which it

was requested. After one year the “Red-White-Red Card plus” can be applied for, this grants the holder

unlimited access to the labour market. Persons who immigrate to Austria with the “Red-White-Red Card”

do not need to prove German language skills before entering the country (they are not subject to the

requirement of “German prior to immigration”). Family members of workers who immigrate using the

“Red-White-Red Card” are not subject to the quota requirement and receive a “Red-White-Red Card” with

instant free access to the labour market. The “German prior to immigration” regulation must be observed

by family members. Immigration regulations for qualified workers were also created at the level of the

Working Holiday Scheme The Working Holiday Scheme was signed between the Government of the Republic of Austria and the

Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic

of China. This declaration gives young people between 18 and 30 years of age from

Austria and the HKSAR the opportunity to engage in employment or study in the

context of a holiday stay in the HKSAR or Austria for a period of up to six months.

However, employment and study must not be the primary reason for the visit but for

the purpose of supplementing their travel funds or for educational purposes. Young

people from Austria may apply for a visa for a working holiday stay in the HKSAR

through a Chinese diplomatic and consular mission in Austria, or at the Immigration

Department of the Government of the HKSAR directly. Nationals of Austria who are

taking part in the Working Holiday Programme are subject to the laws and regulations

in force in the jurisdiction of the HKSAR, particularly with regard to employment standards, including

wages, working conditions, employment insurance benefits and occupational health and safety.

AUSSENWIRTSCHAFT magazine

The magazine of ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA is to inform about various issues concerning

doing business abroad and current economic trends. In this edition, the main story

is the market opportunities in the Dollar markets (USA, Canada, Mexico, Peru,

Colombia) because of the weak Euro. In addition, a

special booklet covers the Autrian Exporters Day

and presents the winners of the export award in

each category. There is also a guidebook with the

addresses of all ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA offices in

the world and the contacts of all heads of offices.

This booklet gives an overview of the many services of ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA that

support Austrian companies at doing business abroad, such as country profiles,

market analyses, magazines, forums, meetings and publications. We also provide

platforms like advantageaustria.org, showcases, faires or business travels for

companies to present themselves and comprehensive consulting for any business

situation, especially providing contacts to trustworthy foreign business partners.

World Champion Austria 2016

This book offers an overview of all sectors of the Austrian economy and individual

companies. Besides the presentation of world market leaders and interesting

startups there is also information about the business location Austria.

Cashflow: Vienna – City for life

The economic magazine Cashflow now deals with the city of Vienna in its new special

edition “Vienna – City for life”. It seeks to present Vienna in all its multidimensional

nature, be that a hotspot for the european creative industry, as a young startup hub, as an

important centre for international diplomacy or as a smart example for urban

development. This edition was created in cooperation with the city of Vienna and was also

published in English language.

Business Hub VIENNA

Vienna has earned itself an excellent reputation as a city with high standard of living. This

attracts a lot of key employees from international companies and organisations to work

here. The population growth will increase Vienna´s population from 1.8 mio to 2 mio by

2029. Vienna is also among the Top 10 European regions when it comes to productivity.

The latest edition of the German economic magazine ChinaContact is online and features a special about

the business relations between Austria and China with focus on the chances of small and mid-sized

Austrian companies in China. This includes interviews with the heads of ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA offices in

Hong Kong, Christian H. Schierer and Beijing, Martin Glatz.
