here are fewer women than men in the world of science and
this discrepancy is even more pronounced in Israel. As a
small country, with few natural resources, Israel relies heavily on its brain
power and it would be wise to fully utilize this human potential to its fullest.
We would like to see the number of women faculty members at the
Weizmann Institute and nationwide increased; we would also like to see
a rise in the number of young female researchers and tenured scientists.
In the field of exact and natural sciences, there are several reasons
why many Israeli female graduates forego their career development.
Social, cultural, and financial pressures in our society may force women
to abandon their academic careers. One of the major obstacles is the
fact that women PhD graduates easily give up the opportunity for a
postdoctoral training tenure. Postdoctoral training abroad is vitally
important to the quality of Israeli science and is a critical phase in every
man and woman scientist’s career. Unfortunately, this is precisely the
stage at which so many women, in fact, decide to give up and forsake their
academic careers. Therefore, we believe that encouraging women to
take a two to four year period for postdoctoral training in a top laboratory
abroad, may be an important step in assuring the successful development
of their scientific career.
On 2007, Prof. Hadassa Degani of the Weizmann Institute of Science
initiated a program, which would actively encourage gifted Israeli female
scientists to enroll in ambitious postdoctoral training programs. This
nationwide award program is aimed at supporting outstanding female
Ph.D. graduates, from all Israeli academic institutions of higher learning.
The award, gives a better opportunity for the top talented postdoctoral
women to be trained at leading international laboratories, and thereby

T
permit successful postdoctoral tenure that will assure their returning to
Israel and accomplishment of a successful academic career.
The criteria for the award being given are based on academic excellence,
an outstanding Ph.D. thesis, scientific productivity, publications in leading
journals and state-of-the-art proposed postdoctoral research program.
Strong recommendations from their advisors and scientists familiar
with their work, recognition from the candidate’s own institution and
their having been awarded scientific prizes are also highly considered.
The award is given to individuals who were already accepted for their
postdoctoral training to top leading laboratories in the world.
Prof. Varda Rotter, the President’s Advisor for Advancing Women in
Science, together with delegates from several academic institutes in
Israel makes up the prize committee. The program is administered by the
Weizmann Institute’s Feinberg Graduate School, which has extensive
experience in evaluating students and PostDocs.
T he Weizmann Institute of Science is grateful to our
friends throughout the world who have generously
supported the cause of Women in Science.
