Sandra was a lovely, caring lady who lived a life of kindness, generosity and service. Her own experiences with trials and difficulties enhanced her ability to serve others with love, joy, and patience. In his homily during Sandra’s Mass of Christian Burial, Msgr. Richard Shirley stated, “The one thing that epitomized her is that she was truly a woman of faith.” Henry added: “I believe that the foundation for her faith, love, and courage was laid by her parents and the Sisters of the Incarnate Word, who taught her.” Her faith grew during her childhood and adolescent years when she searched for answers to even the most fundamental questions about life. During much of her adult life she faithfully looked after an aging parent, being there for her night and day, all the while being present on the job. Her work was more than just a job; it was her vocation and the honor she believed she was given to help grieving families during their own pain with the loss of a loved one. Sandra was always willing to put herself out for a neighbor, a friend, or someone who needed that helping hand or that listening ear. The totality of Sandra’s life and her faithfulness give witness to the gift of generous service in the way she lived, the values she espoused, and the fidelity of a lifetime. Her son Henry is indebted to his mother for her example of goodness and faith. He is grateful to those who joined him in making the Sandra Pope LeMaire Sykora Scholarship a reality. “Setting up this scholarship in honor of my mom has been a rewarding experience for me,” stated Henry, “Since it will provide an ongoing way of continuing her legacy of faith. I would encourage anyone wanting to spread the Good News through Catholic education to support the IWA Scholarship Program.” Leaving a Legacy of Faith Sandra Sykora, her granddaughters Leah and Lindsey, and her sister-in-law Jonelle LeMaire Henry LeMaire and his mother Sandra Sykora

The Incarnate Word Academy Foundation (IWAF) newsletter, Advancing the Mission, provides the IWA community with information and updates regarding the Foundation’s recent activities and endeavors. The IWAF is a separate non-profit entity, which operates independently from IWA. It was established by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament (IWBS) in 1989 to provide Incarnate Word Academy with adequate funding for scholarships and educational development well into the future. The IWAF has a Board of Trustees comprised of the current elected leadership of the IWBS Congregation. This fall issue includes the 2012-2013 Annual Report.

INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER

“Since my mom’s death in June, 2011, not a day goes by that I am not reminded of her and all she taught me,” reminisced her son, Henry LeMaire. “I was so proud of her and all she did for others. In October, 2011, I established the Sandra Pope LeMaire Sykora Scholarship as a tribute to her and a way of keeping her memory alive.”

A descendant of the pioneering Dunn/Dunne family, Sandra followed in the footsteps of family members who were strongly committed to Catholic education at Incarnate Word Academy—Katie Dunn, who graduated in 1913; Maxwell P. Dunne, Jr., who graduated in 1927; her mother Virgin Dunne Pope, in 1931, to name but a few of the many relatives educated at IWA.

After completing her elementary education at CC Cathedral School, Sandra graduated from Incarnate Word Academy in 1966 and later sent her son Henry to IWA.

Sandra was a lovely, caring lady who lived a life of kindness, generosity and service. Henry described her as a “selfless giver and a great mom.” Her commitment to the Sisters and priests of the Corpus Christi Diocese was evident in the time, attention, and service she gave to them so selflessly throughout her lifetime.

Sandra had a unique gift of relating and consoling those who had lost loved ones with a compassion and graciousness—

showing how deeply she cared. Her own experiences with trials and difficulties enhanced her ability to serve others with love, joy, and patience.

In his homily during Sandra’s Mass of Christian Burial, Msgr. Richard Shirley stated, “The one thing that epitomized her is that she was truly a woman of faith.” Henry added: “I believe that the foundation for her faith, love, and courage was laid by her parents and the Sisters of the Incarnate Word, who taught her.”

Her faith grew during her childhood and adolescent years when she searched for answers to even the most fundamental questions about life.

I would encourage anyone wanting to spread the Good News through Catholic education to support the IWA Scholarship Program.”

The Revival of Charitable Remainder TrustsIn the early 1990s, when the capital-gain tax rate on securities and non-depreciated real estate was 28 percent and the maximum tax rate on ordinary income was 39.6 percent, the charitable remainder trust was very popular. If someone sold a highly appreciated asset, he or she would have only 72 percent of the gain to reinvest; but by transferring it to a charitable remainder trust, 100 percent of the proceeds could be reinvested.

Moreover, the donor received a significant income-tax deduction—and if in the highest bracket, every dollar of deduction resulted in nearly 40 cents of tax savings, with even more savings in a state that allowed a charitable deduction on the state return.

A decline in popularityLater in the 1990s, the capital-gain tax rate was reduced to 20 percent. Then under the Bush administration it was reduced still further to 15 percent, and the maximum federal tax rate on ordinary income decreased to 35 percent. During the first decade of the new century, we also saw two stock market declines and the collapse of real estate prices. Not surprisingly, fewer people estab-lished charitable remainder trusts; they had less to give, and their tax savings would be smaller.

Reasons for the revivalNow all of those factors that worked against charitable remainder trusts have been reversed. The Dow is at an all-time high, home prices are rising again, and income -tax rates are back to where they were in the 1990s. The capital-gain tax rate on securities and non-depreciated real estate can reach 23.8 percent—including the new health-care surtax—and the top income-tax rate is once again 39.6 percent. Little wonder that we are seeing a revival of charitable remainder trusts.

Benefits to the familyAside from offering a way to convert highly appreciat-ed assets to life income without current taxation of the gain while reducing taxes on other income, a charitable remainder trust can be the solution for a variety of family situations:

• Itcanincreaseincomeduringretirement.• Itcanpermitthediversificationofaconcentrated stock position without incurring capital-gain tax.• Itcanbeameanstoaccumulatemoreforfuture retirement on a tax-sheltered basis.• Itcanbeatax-favoredwaytoprovideforheirs with remaining retirement funds.• Itcanbeameanstoprovideforarelativewhois not a prudent money manager.

And, yes, you can choose the charitable purpose for the remaining trust assets. For example, you could create a scholarship in your name or your family’s name. Please contact: Sr. Martha Ann Snapka 361-883-8229, ext. 106 Cell: 361-877-1232 Email: [email protected]

A N N UA L R E P O R T ~ 2 0 1 2 - 2 0 1 3The Incarnate Word Academy Foundation was established in 1989 by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament to provide adequate funding for scholarships and educational development solely for Incarnate Word Academy, Corpus Christi, Texas. It serves as a stable ongoing way of assuring tuition assistance for years to come by providing an entity for receiving and managing the contributions of donors according to their intent. The IWA Foundation is committed to scholarships and tuition assistance grants, faculty professional growth, and education into the future. Inviting the school community, past partners, friends, and benefactors to partner with the Sisters and the Foundation in providing a quality education in a Catholic school environment has been a blessing to all concerned—the sisters, the IWA family, and the larger community.

The 2012-2013 Incarnate Word Academy Foundation Report is presented by the Trustees of the Foundation to express appreciation to donors and to practice good stewardship of the resources entrusted to our care. This report is published separately to recognize the distinction between Incarnate Word Academy and the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation, a funding source separate from the annual financial management of the school.

We are grateful to those who have contributed to the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation through scholarships, memorials and bequests. We ask God’s blessings on you and your families.

The Incarnate Word Academy Scholarship Program began in 1978. Since its inception, approximately 750 students have been awarded scholarships. Scholarships are a powerful way to make a difference in the lives of others and help keep Incarnate Word

Academy accessible to as many students as possible.

A permanent scholarship is established with a minimum of $10,000 as an endowed fund within the Incarnate Word Academy Foundation. The principal of the fund is invested and a portion of the earned interest is distributed to qualifying students, preserving the principal to generate future awards. The following permanent scholarships annually enrich the life at Incarnate Word Academy and support the school in perpetuity, helping to build ongoing funds to sustain IWA in the years to come. Donors are encouraged to make additional contributions to current permanent scholarship funds in order to increase the fund and earnings amounts over time.

PLANNED GIVING

Keep Bequests in Balance with Percentage Provisions If you are like most of us, you probably have contemplated how much of your estate you would like to leave to the people and organizations important to you. At first blush this seems like a pretty straightforward decision. To be sure, it is often not a complicated process to decide on bequests. However, specifying some bequests in exact dollar figures rather than percentages can have a significant impact on how your assets are distributed—and possibly result in distributions other than what you desired.

For example, suppose that when you plan your bequests your estate is worth $2,000,000 and you decide to leave $250,000 to each of your three children, $250,000 to our organization, and everything else to your spouse.

But what if over time there are dramatic shifts in the value of your assets, perhaps due to major moves in the stock market?

If your estate declines in value …If the value of your estate drops to $1,200,000, your chil-dren and our organization still get $250,000 each; howev-er, due to the order in which these types of bequests are fulfilled, your spouse gets only the remainder—$200,000. That may not be at all what you intended.

If your estate increases in value … If the value of your estate grows to $4,000,000, your chil-dren and our organization still get $250,000 each—and your spouse gets $3,000,000. If you had expected your estate to be worth so much more, you might have wanted your children or our organization to receive larger bequests.

Planning pointer: An easy way to provide for these kinds of contingencies is to make percentage bequests instead of bequests of a specific amount. Under this approach, you would leave one-eighth of your estate to each child and to our organization, with half going to your spouse.

In the case of the estate value declining from $2,000,000 to $1,200,000, the children and our organization would each get $150,000 instead of $250,000—and your spouse would get the other half, $600,000.

In the case of the estate value doubling to $4,000,000, each child and our organization would get $500,000 and your spouse would get $2,000,000.

The percentage bequest helps ensure that your true wishes are fulfilled.

Charles D. Imbergamo (L) accepts the award from Paxton Longwell (R), IWA Board Chair.

His dedication to Incarnate Word Academy stems from the realization “that faith formation is the necessary foundation for a meaningful life.”

When asked about the formation of our next generation and the role of the educator, Charles stated, “We are keenly aware of the

love of God for all persons and the divine spark that moves us to continue to form young people who will know and love God, model Christ, and live for others.”
