As a Speech therapist, I was working with a preschooler on

body-part identification and the ‘k’ sound.

To that end, I had him use Play-Doh to make a sculpture of

me.

“Is that my neck?” I asked, trying to get him to repeat the

word.

“No, that’s your chin,” he said.

He added more Play-Doh. “Is that my neck?” I asked.

“No, that’s your other chin.”

Method

Spring vegetable bake with cheddar and parmesan sauce

1/2 small cauliflower, cut into florets 2 medium zucchini, thickly sliced 1 bunch broccolini, cut into 5cm lengths 150g snow peas, trimmed 25g butter 2 tablespoons plain flour 1 1/4 cups milk 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese 4 tablespoons shaved parmesan

Step 1 Preheat oven to 210°C/190°C fan-forced. Bring a large saucepan of salted water to the boil over high heat. Cook cauliflower for 4 minutes or until just tender, adding zucchini and broccolini after 1 minute and snow peas after 2 minutes of cooking time. Using a slotted spoon, transfer vegetables to a plate lined with paper towel to drain. Arrange vegetables in a 6 cup-capacity ovenproof dish. Step 2 Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add flour. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until mixture is bubbling. Remove from heat. Gradually stir in milk until smooth. Return to heat. Cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until thickened. Stir in cheddar. Season with salt and pepper. Pour sauce over vegetables. Sprinkle with parmesan. Bake for 15 minutes or until top is golden. Stand for 2 minutes. Serve.

Step 1

Ararat Neighbourhood House is now registered with Australian Community Kitchens.

Grow Cook Share

The philosophy of Australian Community Kitchens is to further develop a sense of community around food.

Community Kitchens are groups of people who regularly meet at community-based venues to socialise and cook fresh and nutritious meals together.

They encourage group members to develop new friendships, whilst further developing skills in cooking affordable meals. Participants come from many different walks of life and every member has strengths and skills which can be passed on to other members of the group.

Trained group leaders guide the Kitchens to ensure they run smoothly. They are there as a guide but do not run the Kitchen or make decisions for the group. Each participant is equally responsible for how their Kitchen runs.

Community Kitchens enable group members to develop skills and learn from each other through their own hands-on experiences rather than from one ‘expert’ person teaching the group.

Community Kitchens participants prepare and cook the meals themselves: they have full ownership and there are no handouts.

Ararat Community Kitchen operates on a fortnightly basis from 10am - 1.30pm Monday. Community members are invited to contact Ararat Neighbourhood House to find out more about Ararat Community Kitchen.
