CINAHL – Advanced Search
www.ebsco.com www.ebsco.com
Subject searching
• CINAHL Subject Headings a controlled vocabulary thesaurus
that assists in more effectively searching your CINAHL
database.
• Each bibliographic reference in the database is associated
with a set of subject terms that are assigned to describe the
content of an article.
• Note: Pre-CINAHL does not have subject headings assigned.
• There are 12,714 CINAHL subject headings. These subject
headings are used to effectively search the database and
retrieve literature citations on a specific topic.

Exploding
• CINAHL subject heading terms are arranged in a hierarchy, or
"tree structure", that permits searching at various levels of
detail from the most general level to more narrow levels to find
the most precise terms.
• The subject headings can be exploded to retrieve all
references indexed to that term as well as all references
indexed to any narrower term(s)e.g. Nurses exploded:

Limiting
• Searches can also be limited with specific qualifiers
(subheadings) to improve the precision of the search. There
are 68 topical subheadings that can be linked to CINAHL
subject headings. See http://www.ebscohost.com/resources/cinahl-plus-with-full-text/lma/topical-subheadings.htm
• Searches can be limited to major subject headings which
indicate the main focus of an article.

Further limits to refine your search
• Use Limiters to narrow your search, for example:
– Publication – Limit search results to records from a specific title.
– Journal Subset – Choose from blind peer reviewed, behavioral sciences, nursing, etc.
– Special Interest – Limit to advanced nursing practice, case management, critical care, etc.
– Publication Type – Limit results to source types such as care plans or systematic review.
– Age Groups (Advanced) – Limit to Child, 6-12 years; Middle Age, 45-64 years, etc.

the article has been quoted since it was published.
• If you click on either of these links, records underlined in
blue will have a full bibliographic record in CINAHL and
Full Text links if available. Records in black do not have a
bibliographic record in CINAHL but there may still be
links to full text if available.

Exercise
• You run a cancer support group. The patients in the group are taking their medication but feel well enough to try some kind of alternative therapy in addition to their daily tablets. One of the group mentions that they might be interested in some kind of meditation and you as the lead have been tasked with finding some more information for them. You want to find if there is any evidence on the impact of meditation
