Huntsman Advanced Materials provides engineered solutions for our customers using a wide range of innovative, high-performance thermoset chemistries and formulations. For over 70 years, customers have chosen Araldite,® Euremelt,® and Arathane® brand products for their high-performance adhesive technology.

Every day our scientists work with designers and engineers to bring lightweight, high-strength, durable products to market and help solve increasingly complex design issues. Our growing portfolio of specialty resin systems and adhesives serve the aerospace, automotive, coatings, electronics, energy and industrial composite markets.

High-performance epoxy and polyurethane adhesives from Huntsman are the materials of choice for building durable, lightweight composite panels used in aircraft interior floors, sidewalls and ceilings. Similarly, our structural adhesives are well-suited for manufacturing high-strength sandwich panels used to manufacture recreational vehicles, trucks and trailers as well as multi-layer architectural panels, cold storage panels and garage doors.

Sandwich Panel BondingBonding is one of the most versatile technologies available to the manufacturing industry because today’s broad spectrum of adhesives provide for the secure assembly of many substrates and substrate combinations. In addition, epoxy, polyurethane and methyl methacrylates (MMA) adhesives are designed to be used with many different processing technologies from roll coating to bead/spray/spatter application and several manual methods.

Applications for Bonded Sandwich PanelsRecreational VehiclesStriving to maximize strength and durability and to minimize weight for greater fuel economy, recreational vehicles are built with a variety of materials including structural plastics, steel and aluminum, fiberglass, honeycomb composites, and wood/luan/laminates.

Next-generation adhesive technologies provide reliable joining of these dissimilar substrates and offer significantly improved performance compared to traditional welding or riveting. Bonded assemblies prevent the distortion that can occur with mechanical fastening and offer excellent stress distribution and fatigue resistance. Resulting bonded panels are cosmetically attractive, without substrate “print through.” The walls, sidewalls and other adhesively joined components are impact resistant, feature reduced noise and vibration, and can withstand exposure to temperature and weather extremes as well as ultraviolet light.

Applications for Bonded Sandwich Panels

Trucks and TrailersSandwich constructions comprised of materials such as metal, composite and wood are upgrading truck and trailer panel performance, while reducing weight.

Bonded panels are assembled faster, with less noise, than riveted parts. The sag-resistant properties of polyurethane and epoxy adhesives allow for application on vertical as well as horizontal surfaces. A range of open times accommodate use on large fabricating projects. Fast green strength provides for quick part throughput. Once cured, the bonded panels are sound- and vibration-dampening and produce smooth surfaces without the snag possibilities of riveted parts. Adhesively joined panels can also allow manufacturers to use thinner aluminum skins than riveted assemblies. Bonded construction increases the life span of trailer panels; while riveted parts corrode and crack at the joints, requiring replacement.

High-Durability Doors and PartsSandwich construction doors and panels improve strength, insulate interiors from temperature fluctuations and prevent wind damage. With the ability to securely join substrates designed for specific performance abilities, manufacturers are producing higher quality products than ever before.

Securing dissimilar substrates is a primary strength of polyurethane adhesives. The products maintain their bond strength even when the expansion coefficients of joined materials change when exposed to temperature extremes (hot and cold).

Epoxy adhesives are ideal for building impact-resistant doors and other products that require extra durability to withstand demanding conditions as in industrial plants.

Araldite® MCU – Moisture-Cure Polyurethane AdhesivesSolvent free, single-component liquid polyurethanes include slow, medium-slow and medium-fast curing systems. MCU adhesives are formulated for producing panels comprised of wood and Luan, foams, primed metals and FRP. Please note, one substrate must be gas permeable.

Polyurethane adhesives in the Araldite® moisture-cure product family are odorless and easy to dispense via roll coating or bead/spray/spatter application. They feature a range of open times from three minutes to more than one hour, facilitating use on panels of all sizes. Cured lap shear strength on Luan/FRP and Luan/AL is greater than 600 psi.

Huntsman also offers a line of products to bond engineered plastics, such as polyethylene, polycarbonate and polypropylene. In addition, Huntsman’s MCU (LES) moisture-cure adhesives are specifically designed for use on Low Energy Substrates.

Araldite® HM PUR – Hot-Melt Polyurethane AdhesivesMoisture-curing hot-melt adhesives are designed to be applied in molten form and cure in the presence of moisture to form a tough durable bond. The polyurethanes in Huntsman’s hot-melt line adhere to a wide variety of substrates including wood and wood products, foams, primed metals, FRP and plastics including PVC and ABS. (At least one substrate must be gas permeable to achieve an optimal bond.)

Ideal for roll coating of sandwich panel layers, Araldite® hot-melt polyurethanes have open times of three to seven minutes. The adhesives exhibit excellent elongation and produce laminates with good interlaminar lap shear and peel strengths.

Araldite® 2 K PUR – Two-Component Polyurethane AdhesiveThese adhesives are ideal for use when at least one substrate is not gas permeable, such as plastics, FRP and primed metals. Araldite® polyurethane adhesives produce durable joints with good flexibility and require minimal surface preparation. The products have 1:1 pbv mix ratios and attain handling strength in four hours at room temperature. Laminated panels exhibit high shear strength and high elongation and flexibility when subjected to heat and environmental exposure to gas, oil and water.

Araldite® MMA – Methyl Methacrylate AdhesivesRapid-curing methacrylate adhesives are toughened systems that are well suited for building sandwich panels with metal, FRP composite and thermoplastic (ABS and PVC) substrates. The products have a convenient 1:1 resin:hardener pbv mix ratio and have open times of two to 12 minutes.

Once cured, MMA adhesives have high lap shear and good roller peel strengths with excellent oil and gasoline resistance. Additionally, these adhesives exhibit high performance in elevated temperature environments (service temperature of up to 212˚F/100˚C).

Araldite® Epoxy AdhesivesEpoxy structural adhesives from Huntsman are supplied in a wide variety of different formulations. For sandwich panels, two new next-generation systems are now available. They have convenient 1:1 or 2:1 pbv resin:hardener mix ratios and cure at room temperature. One adhesive has high shear strength and peel strength at temperatures from -67˚F (-55˚C) to 200˚F (93˚C). A second epoxy system exhibits very high heat resistance (400˚F [204˚C]) as well as high compressive strengths on composite substrates.

Euremelt® Polyamide AdhesivesTo minimize panel assembly time, hot-melt polyamide adhesives develop rapid green strength while offering open times long enough for laminating panel surfaces. The adhesives produce long-lasting joints on wood and wood laminates used in building cabinetry. Cured panels can withstand exposure to temperature extremes as well as exposure to greases and oils.

Araldite® EVA AdhesivesEconomical, easy-to-use EVA hot-melt adhesives are ideal for producing tough, flexible bonds between laminate layers used in sandwich panels. The materials are particularly well suited for use on EGS and EPS substrates and on wood, plastics and rubbers. Typical applications include holding small parts in place prior to permanent lamination.
