ments of any market sector, above and below ground, and at sea. Tyco also tai-lors solutions to match environments – from basic stand-alone conventional fire detection systems through to complex, integrated fire protection and alarm sys-tems.

These solutions can incorporate fire alarm, evacuation systems, emergency communication and fire suppression, while Tyco’s industry and regional knowl-edge helps organisations stay in compli-ance with codes and regulations. Tyco guarantees sustainable security, process efficiency and protection for people and material goods. All of which are indispen-sable as part of an effective fire-fighting and evacuation system.

People live, work and play in a wide range of indoor environments. Wheth-er in office buildings, warehouses, air-port terminals, shopping malls, hospi-tals, nursing homes, schools or universities, wherever people gather in numbers there will be a business, ethical and regulatory requirement for fire detection and protection.

Building and workplace regulations dictate that prior to an indoor area being used for commercial purposes, potential fire and safety hazards must be assessed and pro-tected against. In the event of a fire, coun-ter measures need to be taken rapidly. Tyco’s latest fire detection technology ensures rapid response times triggering alarms, fire service calls and evacuation systems ahead of fire suppression.

Smouldering fires or blazes that are not detected immediately pose significant hazards, and protecting people is of para-mount importance. Heat from a blaze can reach 800°C within minutes. Some 90 percent of all fire victims, however, do not expire due to the fire itself, but suffo-cate from the highly toxic fumes.

Direct losses associated with fire can amount to millions for affected busi-nesses. Fires also trigger a chain reac-tion of additional indirect losses. If a company’s infrastructure is destroyed by fire, then there is a threat of loss in pro-duction and consequently in earnings. If an energy control centre fails due to a fire, the loss of a power supply could lead to unforeseen and unpredictable consequences that could affect large swathes of the surrounding population. A fire in some situations, such as at a hospital, could be catastrophic. Early warning systems not only save lives, but

also protect assets from destruction and/or long-term damage.

Modern detectors often combine a varie-ty of different complementary features. A modern detector can detect smoke, heat and carbon monoxide, which increases fire-detection reliability. Fire detection and fire-fighting systems today must meet stringent regulatory demands on quality. Furthermore, the increasing inte-gration between fire-safety and security solutions provides organisations with total building security.

Tyco Integrated Fire & Security is a driv-ing force in pioneering fire prevention and intelligent security. Tyco offers a complete range of fire protection and safety solutions to meet the require-

When a fire breaks out it can spread rapidly leaving very little time to react. Early automated fire detection is therefore a basic

prerequisite for enhanced protection and security. Wherever people, assets and property need to be protected from the dan-

gers of fire, modern fire detection technology is indispensable.

// Emergency communication: The Tyco range extends from electronic acoustic signalling devices to complex voice alarm systems.

// Precise location and display of fires: using the Tyco Integrated System Man-agement (TISM) software packages, customers can visualize and track all events from a centralised location. In order to initiate immediate counter-measures, users can see which fire alarms have been triggered and know exactly where a fire has broken out.

For example, by considering any infra-structure such as a data centre, shopping mall, hospital, or any other public build-ing, no two buildings are the same which clearly illustrates the complexity of the demands that are made on a fire alarm system.

Early detection, fire-fighting measures and rapid evacuation are essential irre-spective of the infrastructure scenario. All systems have to work in parallel, with the early alarm triggering a chain reaction

with fire alarm systems, and thus speed-ing up the entire process.

In large scale industrial locations that potentially house highly explosive materi-als (ATEX area), additional precautions should be taken. A fire event in an area with highly flammable materials repre-sents a major threat and risk that needs to be properly handled. The complexity of buildings and equipment demands extremely meticulous planning for fire protection and specific tailored devices. Fire alarm and evacuation systems must be designed with special consideration of relevant regulations. Specialist software packages, such as Tyco Integrated Sys-tem Management (TISM), enable all sys-tems to converge in a control centre where anything unusual is detected and immediately checked.

Tyco offers comprehensive fire safety and security solutions which meet the requirements of any infrastructure, whether it is a single

building or a complex industrial plant. Tyco’s fire protection solutions cover detection, triggering the alarm and evacuating the building until

emergency services arrive.

Tyco’s ZETTLER® systems are based on robust MZX technology and ensure reliable detection and identification of the precise location of fire. As a result, the appropriate measures can be initi-ated quickly and reliably using Tyco’s comprehensive portfolio of fixed and mobile extinguishing systems.

Tyco fire alarm systems provide reliable situational management of hazardous scenarios, powerful algorithms to deter-mine real alarms, and consequently superior protection. Tyco’s comprehen-sive coverage guarantees the following:

// Surveillance and early fire detection: Tyco fire alarm systems provide early and reliable detection of the typical signs of a fire such as heat, toxic gas-es, smoke and heat radiation (using flame detection). Tyco smart systems can process and combine several of these signs, reaching unbeatable mul-ticriteria precision. They are compliant with standards, user-friendly and have long service lives.

KMG Ultra Pure Chemicals relies on Tyco

KMG Ultra Pure Chemicals has a property located in Saint Fromond, France, with 15,000 square metres of production and office space. A significant portion of the plant is set aside for semiconductor pro-duction and is highly sensitive. Conse-quently early fire detection is particularly important to ensure that important data and materials are not destroyed in the event of a fire.

The conditions at the facility in Saint Fromond vary widely from space to space; temperature requirements vary from room to room, some areas contain toxic fumes, some have high humidity and some rooms need to be completely clean. All of these differences need to be taken into account when designing a complete fire detection and suppression system. Furthermore, the existing system needed to be integrated into the new system.

The ZETTLER® EXPERT by Tyco was installed as a central fire alarm system. The fire detectors were adapted to the respective rooms: 150 smoke detectors,
